I have a friend who moved to Fla when he was 3, but his dad and brothers are such big Yankees fan from living up here, he is a fan. He's never been to Yankees Stadium, but he goes to Legends Field quite a bit.

I moved from Jersey when I was 10 months to FL. My father is a lifetime Yankees fan. I've been to Yankee Stadium around 10 times. Before the Marlins, the Heat and the Panthers, Jai Alai used to make the front page of the sports section in South Florida papers during the football offseason.I don't consider myself a frontrunner. They pretty much sucked when I was young. The Mets were much better.

Perhaps it's the same thing as some tool living in Arizona associating himself with all the states and schools in the Pac-10, when he's never lived in Eugene, Los Angeles, Corvallis, etc.

:jawdrop:There are a few of us on here who were raised with Yankees Baseball through their darkest hour (late 60's/Early 70's & Late 80's/Early 90's).
Hey what do I know, I'm a Cub fan
He was talking about dark hours, not centuries.
See, you really have no idea what you speak of.....it's only been 99 Years.

i have grown up a yankees fan. Never lived there. Never been there. Every report I could in elementary school, middle school, high school etc was done on the yankees or about a yankee.

Everybody complains these days about the yankees payroll. Well what does it get them? A whole lot of frustration and dissapointment.

When they were winning world series rings they were doing it with mainly guys who were either brought up yankees or only thrived as Yankees.

How do you not think of Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, and Dimaggio when you think of baseball?

Just thinking about Gehrig giving everything he had to this team gives me the chills. Remembering what Phil Rizzuto said about Dimaggio, thinking about Ruth hitting 60 homers in one season back in the day, Mantle's "All my Octobers".

I am sorry but to criticize anybody for loving the Yankees is just baffling to me.

There's tons of Yankees fans in CT, I can tell you that much. And since we have no MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS, AFL, GBA, NHRA, STD, etc. teams located here, you'll find that there is a good split of Yanks/Sox, Pats/Jets/Giants, Celts/Knicks and so forth.

Heck, where I live I'm halfway in between Boston and New York so geographically speaking I'm closer to both those cities than a lot of sports fans are to their own in-state home teams.

Yes, and it's quite pathetic.

... and their uncle made them a Duke basketball fan, sister-in-law made them a 49ers fan in the 80's while their cousin made them a Cowboy's fan in the early 90's. Then there was their childhood friend, whose father was friends with a security gaurd at the United Center who convinced them to be a Bulls fan during the Jordan era.

 Anyone who thinks geography doesn't have anything to do with why you root for a team is sadly mistaken.A huge part of being a fan is experiencing something with a group, whether it's celebrating or commiserating. In large part, the collective experience and bonding with others is what fandom is. It is the historical chain of experiences by individuals, who are diverse and might never have any other bond with one another, that makes up the fanbase, not individuals watching games and knowing facts about a team.I can understand respecting the Yankees for their tradition, but being a true fan of them is beyond me if you are outside of the geographical area.

What about the old man who grew up idolizing Mickey mantle? Or the kids like my son who idolizes Derek Jeter? You can't blame a person because they grew up around here while the Yanks were winning.

As long as they stick with them through the bad times.

It has more to do with WHEN you became a Yanks fan, than anything else. Trust me, at least 1/2 the yankees fans IN NY are frontrunners (and that is nothing against real yanks fans. The same will be said of Mets fans when the yanks go through a five year losing period and the Mets are on top).

I have friends who were yanks fans from birth. I have other friends who tossed aside their Mets caps after the 80's for the yanks run. Less to do with where you live than when you became a fan.

That said, my guess is there are a lot of people who did jump on the wagon post '95 outside of NY and yes, obviously they are frontrunners.

But for you Yankees fans, don't you feel at least a little bad knowing that you can get practically any free agent out there knowing that his price won't be too high (in most cases)?

:lmao: Ummm why would we feel bad about that?
:fishing: It's not my Money. + it's proven that buying every FA doesn't make a Champion.

Yanks didn't break the bank when it came to ARod or Manny Ramirez.

I feel lucky to be a Yankees fan. Steinbrenner is dedicated to winning (although some of his moves might hurt more than they help). You gotta love that.

Better question...True Yankee's fans, do you feel bad that because of all the people around the country that have jumped on the bandwagon, being a fan of your own team is deminished?

Yankee's apperal has become as much of a fashion statement as it is support for your team. Rappers, wanna be gangsters, and bandwagon riding #####es all over the country make a mockery of being a Yankee fan in my mind.

Nothing pisses me off more than seeing a 13yo kid in Baltimore walking around in baggy jeans, a XXXXXXL white t-shirt and a crooked Yankee's hat.

I don't let that bother me. I find it funny because those punks wouldn't last 10 minutes here. What does bother me is the affect HipHop/Prison culture has on today's youth. As for bandwagoners, it happens. No matter the sport, the team that is currently winning is the most popular.

That's just it. Haven't seen a Cardinals hat, White Sox shirt, Angels or Diamondbacks anything over the past years. Locally or on TV. And not to take a low blow, because I know the Yankee's continue to have positive win seasons and a winning tradition, but I wouldn't say they are currently winning.

No. Just like you hate putting up with idiot Yankees fans you come across, so do I. I don't see why that should affect my rooting for the team. A weird analogy, but it's like asking someone who is religious if their faith is compromised by the actions of some of those in their religion. You'll be hard pressed to find someone who says it affects them.

I am a traditionalist. I have, in my life, only owned 1 Yankees hat that wasn't navy with a white NY logo, and that was when I was younger. What you have to understand is that NY has just as much cache as the Yankees, so when Puff Daddy wears a red Yankees hat, it's almost like he's just wearing a red New York hat. Similarly, many passive "fans" in or from Boston and/or Chicago will wear Red Sox or Cubs hats, not because they are diehard fans, but because for them it represents the city.

A lot of famous rappers are from NYC. They're emulating that. Those kids want to be Jay-Z. When I asked a friend why anyone would wear a red Yankees hat, he said "Who would kids rather look like, Puff Daddy or Lou Gehrig?"Baltimore just needs to step it up in the rap game, and you'll get more Orioles hats on wannabe thugs.

I'm pretty versed in pop culture terms, particularly the sports kind, but I've never seen "frontrunner" used as common nomenclature for what I tend to call "bandwagon fans." Maybe that's not a Northeast term?

Also, I'm a lifelong Yankee fan, third generation I suppose, as my grandfather was a fan and frequent attendee of games during the Gehrig/Ruth years. (Perhaps he was a bandwagon fan then?)

Poseur fans don't bother me much.

NOTHING pisses me off more than those damn Ruth/Gehrig bandwagoners. They piss me off SOOOOO much!
