Are you happy with the way your coach/OC calls his game? (1 Viewer)

How many of you are happy with your teams' offensive philosophy/play calling.

As a dolphin fan, I can't say I always hate their playcalling, but I find myself wondering what is it with calling a running play with under 4 minutes in a game and being down. This is the team that brought the wildcat to the nfl and such, but sometimes the time and place they decide to call plays makes absolutely no sense to me.

How many of you are happy with your teams' playcalling.

I would imagine Pats fans, Colts fans, and Saints fans would be the major ones. How about the rest of you?

I don't watch the game film of their opponents and what they think they will do situationally so I can't really say I have the insight to judge the OC.

Niner fan here. Have gone from completely disgusted (under jimmy raye) to acceptably predictable (mike johnson). Regardless they need to get rid of singletary. If he's got a lead in the second half, regardless of how small a margin, don't expect to see any passes until its 3rd and long, in which case it eventually leads to them NOT having the lead...

Hey Sing, PLAY-MAKERS win games, not MISTAKE-AVOIDERS. This has already been proven with the changing of Smiths, now he just needs to apply that change to himself.

Bratkowski is terrible, I have been hoping the Bengals fire him for years but with the talent on offense he has done just mediocre enough to keep his job each year.

At times Mike McCarthy looks like a genius.

Other times he pisses me off to no end on his failure to stick to a running game and trying deep balls over and over while his QB has no time to throw and is getting killed.

I mostly agree with this.

For the record, Dan Henning used the wildcat quite heavily in Carolina for a few games toward the end of his tenure, back when we hated him.And no, I am not happy with the way that my coach and OC calls the Panthers games.

yeah sometimes I love McC's game calling and other times i use my WTF face too much. His clock management is terrible though.

The Jets OC Brian Schottenheimer can be baffling at times..... He has some games that are just absurd... One great example was last year Vs Buffalo in a monsoon... The Jets are racking up like 300 yards on the ground pretty much in control of the game - he's calling pass plays left and right as Sanchez throws 5 or 6 interceptions.... Even Buffalo fans I was with were in disbelief. Why would you ever throw in that situation with the lead??? It's like he tries to be tricky at times and has some book that tells him to do the opposite of common sense.

The Ravens game to start this season was equally baffling - a team that is down to backup CB's and Ed Reed is out and you sit on the ball all game never taking a shot down field :lmao:

Another thing that Kills me and happened this past week in the Cleveland game... The Jets are in the redzone, They run it for 9 yards and now have 2nd a 1... You are supposed to be TEAM GROUND AND POUND!!!!! So, IMO, that 1 yard is a gimmee.. You're in the redzone so IMO you can even go for it on 4th down.. That 1 yard is basically in your back pocket - THIS IS WHEN YOU GO FOR IT.... THROW IT UP IN THE ENDZONE!!!!!!! Even an INT in this situation doesn't hurt that much - THIS RIGHT HERE, is OPPORTUNITY - THIS right here is where your QB becomes a man... THIS is the situation you wait for, sometimes for weeks!!!!!

What do the Jets do - They bring in Brad Smith for a Wildcat ####... They pick up the 1st down.

Yeah, you get a fresh set of downs but, to me you could have taken 2 shots at the end zone and still had a chance on 4th to ground and pound if you want to...

I would love it if Bruce Arians can continue his career as an OC for the next two decades...

for any team other than the Steelers.

Henning also used versions of it back when Ray Lucas was QB with the Jets when Vinny T went down...

Funny how it became the thing Miami invented... But, I guess they did rely on it more than anyone else and did have some good success..

Lions OC is starting to get maddening. The running game is almost non-existent yet they continue to try and run the ball to set up the pass....how bout pass teh ball which is clearly their strength to set up the run

And I am so sick of seeing Calvin used as a decoy until late in several games :bag:

I like the Cowboys obviously but live in Detroit and also like the Lions. As far as the Lions, the play calling has been dictated for years by not having a good offensive line and always finding themselves in a hole. So, early on they can't run the ball and later in the game they're way behind and they have to throw. So as far as the Lions are concerned, how can I really be happy with their play calling but I do feel like IF they ever acquired an offensive line, they may choose to run the ball a little more than they do.The Cowboys......no, I have not been happy. Too many WR screens, not enough imagination on 3rd and 4th and short. With the lack of time Kitna has gotten (even Romo when he was in there) I can kind of see why they go to the quick WR screen, but they'd go to it over and over. I will say Dez is starting to get pretty good at that play though and has made the most out of it because of his natural ability to make a play.I did like seeing a couple more screen passes to Felix last game. I used to love when Dallas used to throw screens to Tony Dorsett. Dorsett ran the screen about as good as anyone I ever saw, I mean that. A well run RB screen is such an effective play against an aggressive defense like the Giants.I do realize that play calling is a lot harder than people imagine and that hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes some of these calls do leave you scratching your head though.

When Martz isn't being stubborn as all get out, he actually is pretty inovative. The Giants game and Seattle it seemed as those Martz was being arrogant with his play calls (i.e. "I don't care if it's not working, I'm going to try again"). Lately (Bills and Vikes) he seems to be mixing it up, balancing run vs. pass and being fairly creative (the 3rd and short long TD pass to the backup TE in Vikes game as an example).

While I thought at the beginning of the season Martz was stupid and playing away from his team's strengths, it seems as though a combination of him learning the team and his team learning the system are starting to find a middle-ground that I am fairly pleased with.

As a Jets fan, I pray every day for some team to take a chance on our young "genius" coordinator. Really, please, someone take him. He's got a great pedigree. For sale, cheap.

I suspect that most people won't be happy with their coordinators except for maybe the top 5 offenses.

Bratkowski is terrible, I have been hoping the Bengals fire him for years but with the talent on offense he has done just mediocre enough to keep his job each year.
Agreed. Brat is HORRIBLE & not just for what's going on this year. I've been saying this even since 2005 when the offense was scoring points and the Bengals were a playoff team. That year it was quite easy to go to games and predict with too high a regularity the play call. They were good in spite of Brat because of the talent on the Offense. He has to go.

Generally OK with it, but there are times where I wonder if they're playing in the same game I'm watching. Dallas has two DBs on the sidelines, your down by more than one score, and you DON'T pass the ball to Hakeem Nicks 20 times?!?!?! :wall:

Seahawks have a new offensive coordinator in Jeremy Bates. So far I'm pleasantly surprised. I like that he employs more boots and waggles than we used to see with Holmgren calling the shots. However, Hasselbeck really isn't the best pair of legs at his age for this offense. I can't complain about the Holmgren years. They had a very successful offense in the grand scheme, but I often wonder how much of it was the talent vs. the play calling. Not sure.

Who do you suppose they replace him with?

oh hell ya you do! (Nicks owner)

If they go in-house, then I would guess Callahan.

I am not sure I particularly care for that. Isn't his forte the line?

As a Dolphin fan you know I cannot stand Henning. He has handcuffs on Henne which did little to help his growth. He is way to predictable. he needs some creatvity.

'

I think us fans are never happy are we?

Yes, the oline is his forte, but the Raiders offense was pretty good under him. One year they led the league in rushing, another year in passing. I think they were overall the best offense in another season. After making the Super Bowl in his first year as head coach, the Raiders veterans turned on him and he was fired after a really bad season. It might have been the year that Gannon got hurt. I don't remember for sure.

:tinfoilhat: Not a fan of his at all.Way too many WC formations. Did you notice last week they bunched Sanchez with two other WRs, and the Browns only put two DBs out there. It was a goof that Smith failed to exploit, but WTf not, eh? They never pass out of it.I especially dislike his RZ play calling. He is a drive killer sometimes. As for my team...NO, I don't think its a good idea to run Jhavid Best up the middle. All. Day. Long.I do like the way they use their TEs (the best athletes they have besides CJ), but I wish they ran more screens. The Lions are probably somewhat limited in what they can game plan because the O line is so mediocre. Jeff Backus, barring an injury, will finish this year with 160 consecutive starts - hasn't missed an opening series in his entire career. Considering he has been in the bottom third LT the entire time, effing amazing.

Only 2 Bratkowski posts so far (well 3 with mine)?

Figured there'd be about a dozen so far by this point. Bratkowski probably leads to highest scores in that QB1 bar game he's so ridiculously predictable!

I would take any of the other 31 teams' DEFENSIVE coordinators over him. Actually I'd probably take any of the other 31 teams' vendors over him.

The worst.

Not a fan of the Patriots, but I respect their game-plans when I watch them. Their plan against the Steelers was great. They do a good job of exploiting whatever is weakest on the other team.

Some teams don't execute their game plans well, and some don't look like they have game plans. But whether it ends up as a win or not, I think New England's offense executes a valid game plan pretty much every week.

McCarthy truely sucks down at the goalline and short yardage play calling. RARELY does he use a play fake or roll out Rodgers. He has a mobile QB and isnt using that advantage to put pressure on the defense in those situations.I agree that he tries the deep passing game, that goes back to his roots in the Air Coryell tree. He is not a pure WCO guy like Holmgren. But when he uses the slant and combo routes this team is more succesful.

yeah sometimes I love McC's game calling and other times i use my WTF face too much. His clock management is terrible though.
:kicksrock: I have little confidence in him at the end of halves or games when it comes to that.

I think the Ravens have one of the best in Cam Cameron, though he leaves me scratching my head sometimes. He gets a little too cute early in games, but he does adjust well after half-time to what the opponent is doing - though every once in a while I wish he'd stop trying to outsmart the opposing DC and just pound the friggin ball when he has a lead.

Kyle Shanahan goes for long stretches where he doesn't seem to realize his QB is running for his life and getting killed. A change in playcalling would give the QB a bit more of a chance to make a play but apparently that's not apparent to Kyle.

Well, I heard a rumor that Kyle is not really familiar with the offensive playcalling. :lmao:

Yet you think he can win a Super Bowl.

So every game always comes down to clock management at the end of halves or games?Umm...ok.

Yes, I think he can win a Super Bowl.

But keep up bumping posts if it makes you feel better I guess.
