Maybe there's a reason for this. As for the Patriots being bashed - open up a thread about a team other than the Patriots once in awhile. You'll see that every team receives its share of abuse. The Patriots aren't being singled out in this regard. Only someone with a bizarre persecution complex would come to that conclusion. Is this a joke? Am I imagining the dozens of threads started bashing the Patriots and filled with posts about how the Patriots are the most "arrogant" fan base in the country?Honestly, it is mostly the people on this board, but those Pats fans that I know in person have a strange combination of irritating smugness and a bizarre persecution complex to go with it.Can I ask how a Patriots fan as irked you? Or are you talking about a couple of people on this board?

You're joking, right? No team has been bashed as much as the Pats this year. Not even close. No team was bashed as much as the Colts in the 49-TD year.Maybe there's a reason for this. I have to respectfully disagree with you here. I think having a team that can't be beat is contradictory to what made the NFL so successful lately...the old "any given Sunday" thought process.2007 Patriots = good for football
In that case, could you point me to the "Cardinals deserve an asterisk" thread? I am having trouble finding it.Maybe there's a reason for this. Oh wait, I understand now - every team takes abuse here, the Patriots just deserve more than everyone else, because they are the Patriots.Despyzer said:I bolded the part that you seemed to overlook. No team was bashed as much as the Steelers when they won their SB.
Success breeds haters.
You're doing a great job of convincing everyone that Patriot fans do not have a persecution complex. I was clearly wrong.Oh wait, I understand now - every team takes abuse here, the Patriots just deserve more than everyone else, because they are the Patriots.![]()
If anyone could understand what you were actually saying, then maybe they could determine whether you were right or wrong. Meanwhile, could you direct me to the threads where posters suggest that a defensive player should take out Matt Hasselbeck and end his season? Since there are plenty of examples of someone suggesting that this be done to Brady, and since according to you the Pats are under no bigger a microscope here than any other team, such threads must exist. I can and do appreciate playing football at a high level.NE_REVIVAL said:I know that most of the nation hates the NE Patriots, but I am wondering how many of you out there can put your hate aside for even a moment and appreciate this team for the talented competitors that they are.
If I was making a post that would go directly to the team I probably would. But I don't feel like any positive purpose is served in making a post here that in my opinion is doing little more than to stroke the ego of Patriots fans on this board. A large percentage of whom are the major reason for my dislike of their team through their unwillingness to show objectivity or decent moral principles in matters concerning their team... which said ego-stroking post would probably just make worse.Apologies to that segment of Patriot fans who don't fit the above. How many of you now can make a single post in a thread and acknowledge them for the terrific team that they are without also making a derogatory comment?
Amen! Here's hoping more teams break away from the status quo. It's maddening to me to see the Colts with their offense, punting and taking FGs all the damn time. With an offense like that, you should take your chances!2007 Patriots = good for football Thanks to the organization for setting the bar higher and challenging the other 31 organizations to raise their level. Among other things, they have helped push the conventional wisdom farther away from the conservative school of thought that plagues the game and we will enjoy the effects of that move for a long time.
No. Actually I think most want to see a team win with class. *NE_REVIVAL said:I know that most of the nation hates the NE Patriots, but I am wondering how many of you out there can put your hate aside for even a moment and appreciate this team for the talented competitors that they are. When NE came back and won that game last night I couldn't help but think about Maximus and that great line from Gladiator.
Down 12 on the road in the 3rd quarter, NY KO return td, td at the end of the half, 3rd quarter opening score; I began thinking about just how difficult it is to win every game. It was abvious how hard and how well the Giants were playing (I tip my cap to them) and how this just wasn't going to be NEs night.
But NE came through, like they almost always do and I am just amazed at how tuff and resilent this team is, week after week, after week......
I know you all hate em, but isn't it good to have a villain? Isn't that what you want? We all know that Maximus died and NE will lose eventually, either this year or next. How many of you now can make a single post in a thread and acknowledge them for the terrific team that they are without also making a derogatory comment?
J, I am dissapointed, but not at all surprised that you were the very first to bring this up in this threadReally Sigmund? How are they different from any other team that's dominated?Do the huge fines for cheating not have an effect there as well?J2007 Patriots = good for football Thanks to the organization for setting the bar higher and challenging the other 31 organizations to raise their level. Sorry to speak in cliches - I tried to be more specific in my response to Joe - going for it on 4th down as a default in situations that most teams would kick a FG or punt is one example. The play that capped their season is another great example - how many times have you seen a team use their entire front line to run interference on an onsides kick and leave only one player back there to receive the kick (and that player is an LB/part time TE). Belicheck and the Pats have been willing to make bold decisions and risk more to gain more all year. They have also build a team of interchangeable parts so that they can make one-off game plans to fit any opponent. As far as challenging teams - I would say both the Ravens and Eagles played at a higher level than they had all year against the Pats, and the Giants also put together three quarters of football that were among their best all year to try to beat the Pats. Maybe the other teams were trying to win all of their games, but they sure seemed to try harder vs. the Pats as the year went on. The Pats also forced other teams to take on their risk-taking mentality to win - go for it more on 4th, go into attack mode on offense, and just generally step up their intensity. On the conventional wisdom - we've see too much "coach/play to not lose, and not get second guessed" in this league for a long time. You can mathematically show that teams should go for it on 4th more than they do. We also see teams take their foot off the gas once they're ahead (including Tennessee up by 25 vs Houston in the 4th and almost losing if it wasn't for Kerry Collins heroics). I'll try to develop my thoughts on this a little more, I hope this has helped flesh out my platitudes - I was in the middle of final updates to projections and didnt have time to explain my position. No offense, but what do all of these cliches really mean? Challenging the other organizations to raise their level? The other teams weren't trying to win all of their games? What was the conventional wisdom that was so conservative? Were teams not trying to go for records, and that's why the Patriots came and took them? Is the game really plagued by this school of thought? All a team can do is win their games. That's what the Patriots did, and they deserve all the credit for doing it. But their accomplishment doesn't do much for the other 31 teams. All of them want to keep their well-paying jobs and win their games. All of the Patritos' playoff opponents will go into the game determined to win and thinking they can do it. They won, they earned their wins and they deserve the credit. But challenging teams and pushing conventional wisdom? Sorry, but this sounds like generic speechtalk that would fit in Iowa right now.2007 Patriots = good for football Thanks to the organization for setting the bar higher and challenging the other 31 organizations to raise their level.
