Arrest made in decades old Golden State Killer case (1 Viewer)

Glad they finally caught the guy.  I never figured they would...just assumed he was dead since he went quiet in the early 80's.  I'm amazed someone that sick and twisted could just quit cold turkey like that.
hasn't been definitively proven that he ever did stop. they may just not have been able to link him to other unsolved crimes yet.

also, maybe he realized he was too old to sprint through yards and hop fences anymore.

I can’t believe the timing on this though. That 5 part series ended the Sunday before last, and four days later they identify this guy and police say it has nothing to do with show/book
TV has taught me that police are known to lie occasionally.  This is one of those times I'm guessing.

He also might have finally found the right medication as advancement in pharma over the years might have helped change his chemistry a bit.  Sounds like he was still prone to bizarre and vulgar outbursts in his yard, according to neighbors, but was no longer rapey/murdery.

This is fascinating.

Or maybe he settled down as he aged. Instead of going from D1 college sports to softball like an average FBG, he goes from rape and murder to violent yard outbursts.

He definitely scaled back though.  The kids things that Detroit mentioned makes sense though it seems strange especially since his crimes escalated in violence.  He seemed like he was chasing a rush that abruptly stopped. Hard to believe someone so f'ed in the head could just flip a switch and make it stop.

Similar thing happened in the Tara Grinstead case which was the subject of the "Up and Vanished" podcast series. It's super weird that podcasts/docuseries are going to be instrumental in catching bad guys going forward or at least randomly sink up with breaks in the case.

Also think it is crazy how typical it is that this guy had an unsuccessful law enforcement background. My favorite class in college was about serial killers, and having some tangental/unsuccessful link to law enforcement is really, really common. I think that's bananas.

Maybe the wife found the trophies he was taking. This is going to be interesting if he’s talking.

Yep

Watched that series and said to myself, they all never catch him or he is already dead.

That be a really interesting coincidence.

Another coincidence is that today is national DNA day!

I can tell from personal experience they started the cold case up about 18 months ago. I was contacted about it a little over a year ago.

If anyone gets any updates as far as what this guy has been doing since 1973, and especially since 1986, please post here.  I'm a little disappointed the media hasn't released some juicy details yet, probably too busy chasing political hot takes.

Watching and reading the story and came across some information about a town hall meeting  "where a man spoke up claiming he wouldn't stand idly by while someone raped his wife. Not long after, the man and his wife became the next victims!"   WOW!

Guess it was several months after the town hall meeting but still very creepy.

They had the killer's DNA.

They submitted a sample of the DNA to Ancestry.com or one of those other genealogical sites.

The site gave them a list of possible relatives or ancestors who had partial DNA matches.

Using that list of ancestors, they worked backwards to create a family tree.

Then they tracked down everyone in that tree who was born c. 1915-1964 and obtained discarded DNA samples.

That's the theory anyway.

An arrest has been made related to the Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist. This case stretches back to the 70s and the suspect is believed to have killed at least 12 people, raped at least 45 victims and burglarized hundreds of homes.

A book called "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" is currently #4 on the NYT Best Sellers list about the case. It was written by Michelle McNamara who passed away in 2016 before the book was completed (she was the wife of comedian Patton Oswalt).

Sacramento Bee article on arrest
This has to be an incredibly emotional time for Oswalt. He's been promoting the book for a while now on his twitter and the response has been very positive, before the events of this week. I've not read her book and definitely won't, as its just not my thing, but I wonder if she identified this guy as a potential suspect or how much, if at all, her work aided in this arrest.

I read on Reddit that it played no role.... The coincidence of it all makes that hard for me to believe though.

I might could research this, but:

In reading about this case, there are a ton of acronyms that are never defined. What are VR, EAR, ONS, etc.?

EDIT:

Dang, Wikipedia had some of these deciphered:

EAR - East Area Rapist
ONS - Original Night Stalker
VR - Visalia Ransaker (apparently, this guy went through some nicknames)
B&E - Breaking & Entering

listening to an interview this AM on the radio with the Sheriff in Sacramento. says that the suspect is currently on suicide watch.

I think the book indeed did have a hand to play in the arrest. The author spent quite some time interviewing victims, cops and general digging. This sparked new interest in the case from a lot of people where otherwise this may have remained unsolved forever. My opinion.

He worked as a machinist for Save Mart Supermarkets for 27 years at their Roseville distribution center.

My understanding is that a member of law enforcement spoke at her funeral and said she didn’t wear the badge “but she was one of us.”

Another time, according to Gorman’s son, Grant Gorman, their family received an anonymous threatening message about their pet Rottweiler, complaining that it barked too much.

If it didn’t stop, this person warned, the Gormans were promised “a load of death.”

Despite the lack of a name or number, Grant says his dad “instantly” recognized the caller as DeAngelo.
Tapia wonders if he had anything to do with several cats that have mysteriously disappeared “in the last three or four years.”

“[It] makes you raise your eyebrows, when you think of serial killers and animals,” Tapia says.

This guy is one sick individual, hopefully after the FBI gets done studying him, he suffers a slow

 and painful death

Yeah so they traced the DNA from one person had the same great grandfather x3, and then extrapolated the data set down a dozen or so relatives. They actually Identified another individual of similar age in a nursing home, but his DNA didn’t match.

This is all very compelling on a number of fronts.

So we can track DNA, and the 5th Amendment guys are worried about having to register because then the gubmint can track them.  I think that ship may have already sailed.

So, the turd stain is now pretending to be an old dotard, unaware of what's going on.  That isn't the picture painted by his neighbors who said he was riding a motorcycle, using a boat and keeping his yard meticulous.  Just drown him in urine and be done with it.

Sounds like the cops have submitted the DNA from the Zodiac Killer to the same database and are looking to see if they can find his relatives...
It did seems a bit conspiracy theorish that Ancestry.com or whatever was really gathering data for the government.  But it sure seems like that might be the case.
