Artists, businesses boycott North Carolina over anti-LGBT law (1 Viewer)

Can you explain it a little? I want to understand what is happening there. Is it local government being overridden by Federal? You said it's the opposite.
The local government is being overriden by the state government.  Charlotte passed a law banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identification in the city.  The state government superseded that with a state law saying that localities could not pass their own anti-discrimination policies, plus saying that in public buildings people have to use their birth certificate gender.

The second part is getting a lot more attention but IMO the first part is be far the more harmful and upsetting provision.  The bathroom stuff only governs public buildings anyway.

-1st bolded part, that sounds fairly general and a good idea...I can't refuse to serve you coffee because I think you're gay, that's a simplistic way to say it but that's the general theme of it.

-State steps in and overrides Charlotte

OK, I think i got it...that's a dicey situation. I'm usually for states doing what is best for them but if you believe in that then you might believe it eve more on a local level as in Charlotte doing what is best for Charlotte...this is a slippery slope.

Yup I think you've got it. And there's an added federal role here in that DOJ is challenging the state law.  I don't know anything about that challenge though.

It's weird because while I think the boycotts are a good idea, the NBA one (and probably others) are most hurting the people of Charlotte who tried to do a good thing, only to have the GOP legislature supersede them and create a huge mess.

FWIW, saw a quick article in the newspaper this morning and the Federal Judge is ripping the Governor about this issue. He asked how the bathroom law would be enforced and the Governor's lawyer admitted that there was no mechanism available to enforce the law. LOL. So how can you have a law with no mechanism to enforce it?

And to elaborate, it's a judge appointed by W, so not likely a Liberal judge taking sides.

Good ole Charlotte at it again....school board is implementing training for teachers telling them not not to use the word "boys" and "girls" because it's not making the schools a safe place for transgenders.

Just curious why you didn't post about how Charlotte was going to enforce their bathroom law?

Well, I'm not as worried about enforcing an inclusive law, such as Charlotte's. It's enforcing an exclusive law, such as the Republican's, that is more crucial.

Having said that, don't tell me you've fallen for the R talking point that this is all about bathroom use, and not about systematically allowing discrimination against all gays in state jobs? You're smarter than that, right?

You may not like it, but its the truth:

Its economic health has improved faster than any other state’s, according to data compiled by Bloomberg based on employment, personal income, home prices, mortgage delinquency, tax revenue and the value of corporate equity. It ranked second behind Oregon during the first three quarters of 2015. That’s up from 13th place since the fourth quarter of 2013 and 19th since the end of 2012.

If you've read my posts you know I'm not supporting the Rep response.  The "inclusive" law allowed people to call the police on anyone using the bathroom of the choice if in their mind they thought they were doing it for the wrong reason without repercussions.  It also didn't have a carve out for things like women only yoga classes.  It was a poorly written bill and I'm not letting them of the hook because of a poorly written response.  My tax dollars would have gone towards defending all the lawsuits arising from it.  Obviously the Reps have now caused the same issue at a state level.

Regarding your last statement I'm not inclined to present a full resume, but the first CHUG championship mugs reside with me.

There are quite a few laws like that.

Sure...my point wasn't that NC hasn't been performing well for years, but that HB2 is currently costing Charlotte a lot of growth opportunities.

I honestly haven't followed your responses in this thread. I don't get over to FFA as much as I used to. Apologies.

Regarding your last point, that is correct. However I always assumed that glumpy was the brains behind that team. :D

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2016/08/16/nc-school-to-teachers-dont-call-students-boys-and-girls.html

Teachers in Charlotte, North Carolina, have been advised to stop calling the children “boys and girls,” according to a training presentation on transgender issues.

Instead, the progressives who control Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools want teachers to identify the youngsters as either “students” or “scholars.”

So what if a teacher has a student who is dumb as a rock? Would the child still be called a scholar?

The transgender guidelines, which will go into effect this month, range from the absurd to downright outrageous.

For example, boys who identify as girls would be permitted to participate on overnight all-girl field trips. That’s a rule sure to be a hit among the 13-year-olds.

Another guideline indicates parents could be left out of their child’s gender decision-making. Consider Regulation JICK-R: Privacy Concerns:

“Involvement of parents in the plan is determined in working with the student, considering the student’s age and health, well-being and safety concerns.”

In other words, Jack may be a boy at home, but at school Jack becomes Jill.

“Staff must take care not to ‘out’ a student to others, including the parents of an older student, without the student’s consent,” the presentation stated. “In contacting the parents, use the student’s name/pronoun on birth certificate unless student or parent says otherwise.”

Good ol Wall Drug.  I can't imagine what their signage cost must be.  "100 miles to Wall Drug"... "99 miles to Wall Drug"... "98 miles to Wall Drug"...
Worth every cent.

Turns a giant store full of crap into a OMG, there it is! moment.

I wish I knew the exact moment a woman was gonna see my penis so I could start counting down to it from as far out as possible.

It's probably time to stop looking for reasons to be outraged if the best you can come up with is "teachers will have to pretend that their dumb students aren't that dumb!"

so catch me up - outside of the typical kneejerks, is the board generally tolerant on gender identity issues? i'm people-tolerant and don't care who uses the can in front of me or my kids, but i havent made up my mind on constitutional protection. what's the buzz?

(sos i dont hafta read this whole thing)

I don't think anyone cares too much one way or the other.  HB2 is dumb.  There is no way to enforce it.

I'm only alarmed by the politically correct path we're going down as a country.

Charlotte passed a law like 40 other major cities that hold major conventions that people could use the bathroom they identified with.  As a political response NC republican controlled house and Senate plus governor held an emergency session and passed a law that said you can only use the restroom the corresponded with your driver's license with 24 hours of Charlotte passing theirs.  Then outlawed any govt entity  in NC to pass legislation contrary to that law.

Now there is no punishment for breaking that law other than ones that were already on the books.  This issue is working it's was through federal court which is why only our backward ### hillbillies decided to push this law through for sheer political retaliation.  But by passing this law, which has zero new implications, the hillbillies are costing the state billions, furthermore their ignorant as$e$ can't admit what they did.  In the end, all they accomplished was political suicide which is funny.

I'm a bit troubled by all the stuff people are anxious to make my business and how upset they get when i don't think it's just the most wonderful thing ever when i didn't care to know about it in the first place.

I also think people have a right to consider any behavior - including all expressions of sexuality from cohabitation to public pegging - wrong and act accordingly, including as bosses and landlords, unless they receive any support from a govt which protects those expressions.

That said, the people who seem so interested in preventing others from being who they truly are are generally so ridiculous & repulsive that i truly hate agreeing with them in principle on anything.

ETA: I would also like to see religion reclassified as behavior rather than legacy (it was originally protected because there appeared no viable social option not to worship as one's father did) and its constitutional protections lifted except as speech and assembly. If i didn't think it would incite a flame war, i'd ask the religious if they would trade their protection for that of other 'behavior' of which they fundamentally disapprove

What's become fascinating about this story is that it's driving the vote in North Carolina and helping Clinton- and it's such a pivotal state too. If Hillary wins NC, she is probably a lock. And the economic boycotts are definitely helping her.

Us unchurched coastal elitist leftist libtards like equality, so we're merging men's and women's sports teams into unisex college athletic teams.  And everyone has to shower together.  now you're caught up.

Boy howdy! (or is that sextogenderist too?!) Hand me the strap-on soap, dear.

Generally I think boycotts like these hurt those opposed to the law more than for it.  I prefer moves like some musicians have done, honoring their show dates in North Carolina and using the stage and gathering to express opposition and help organize those looking to overturn it.

However, as a college basketball fan, I don't mind seeing Duke and UNC having to go out of state on opening weekend of the NCAAs once in a while.

Well, the people here in Charlotte losing hundreds of millions of dollars on investment because of HB2 certainly care.  People that care about the rights of their neighbors have who choose to identify a certain way also care.

We'll see if it enough caring to have a  impact at the polls.  However, McCrory has tried to #### with Charlotte's boom his entire term.  Eventually that should have a price

ACC is out too.  Conference championship football game no longer in Charlotte, along with any other neutral site events.  ACC basketball tournament is in Brooklyn for the next two years so no impact there until 2019.

Damn.  This might move the needle.  HB2 supporters are very lucky the 2017 ACC Tournament isn't in Charlotte or Greensboro.

I was going to say Dean Smith is gloating to Jesse Helms over this, but there's no way those two are in the same afterlife dimension.

IIRC, Duke basketball lost a non-conference game over this, too.  A state school from a state refusing to business with North Carolina over HB2 wasn't allowed to travel to Durham to play a road game.

The supporters of HB2 kind of put themselves in a corner by claiming the purpose was to protect women. Can't really back down now without either admitting that your original story was BS, or that you're more concerned about hosting sports events than preventing rape.

I get a decent amount of suspensions when I respond to terrible postings that way.

Delighting in the people where I live being hurt because it helps your corrupt presidential choice is pretty low in my book. But Tim is a troll and does troll things

Where in tim's post did you get "delighting"?  Your obsession with him is really creepy.

Thank you. I'm not delighted by it at all. I hate to see people get hurt. I wrote that I was fascinated by the political results which I am. But I find the whole thing deplorable. Slapdash continually expresses a personal dislike for me, and I'm sorry about that, but I've given up trying to change it.

Who is delighting?  You are way off.

Again...

The very conservative states are going to find themselves on the wrong side of history...and they're going to keep doing it over and over.

The womens ACC basketball tournament is held in Greensboro every year, and this time it won't be. The Greensboro Coliseum and city make money on that tournament. It isn't as lucrative as the men's tournament, but it still brings in $.

It may be helping her, but Hillary has most of the black, gay/transgender, and hispanic votes in NC even if HB2 didn't exist. You can't underestimate the bigots here though. Most are in rural areas, but we have a lot of rural areas in NC.

I think the boycott helps Cooper in the Cooper vs McCrory race, more than Hillary in the Hillary vs Trump race. My parents are both republicans, and they are voting for Cooper over McCrory, but they are still voting for Trump :yucky:  even though they don't care for the guy.

Right, should have mentioned that, my bad.

Whole lot of stupid going on in this thread.  Wanting men to go to the men's room and women to go to the ladies' room doesn't make someone a hillbilly or a bigot.  Liberals are so strange and hateful.
