Ask a zookeeper (2 Viewers)

How far have you ever gone with someone at the zoo, in the standard first, second, third base scale.Ever gotten busy in an empty enclosure after close?and are Platypuses as f'd up as they seem
Homerun, but never in an enclosure. I didn't have time to disinfect the area beforehand.Being a night keeper occasionally has it's privileges.Never worked with platypus, but they are weird. I don't trust venomous mammals.

What animal does the best/worst in captivity, in regards to quality of life. Just wondering when we go to the zoo which animals I should feel the most sorry for and which animals have truly got it good compared to their natural habitat. The elephants and rhinos always look depressed and miserable to me.

On the other hand, I'd like to smack the smug smile of those penguins' beaked face.
The elephants have it rough. I don't thin that most zoos have the area required to care for an elephant honestly. they need TONS of room. I wish our zoo would get rid of elephants. Places like the Wild Animal park in San Diego have the space to care for them, but lots of places don'tMost zoos still use archaic methods of training for elephants as well. if a bullhook is part of your training program, you are doing it wrong. It's just sad

I have 2 question

(blows out) my firend say that he get bit in teh face by a leopard but there was no mark there or nothing. he say that the leopard was very gentle and just touch he teeth to my friend cheek. is that like a customs that they have?

aslo does they have zoos for teh dogs.

stords

p and s does you knews a lady names bluejeans mctammy? she say she think she work in a zoo with you on ireland

Do you ever just think everyone would be better off if the animals were left in the wild instead where they belong?
How would we be able to study these animals if they weren't in the zoo?
studies of wild animals are far more fruitful than studies on captive animals depending on what the goal of the study is. Captive animals behave differently from wild animals.

Which is exactly why I dislike zoos. No offense intended. I can't afford a trip to go on safari, but with nice cameras and hi definition televisions, I'd rather see an actual cheetah hunt on TV then see one laying around in a pen. I'll probably never see a live cheetah in person, unless it's at a zoo. At that point, I'd rather pass. This is a good thread, thanks for taking the time.

I would like to swim with the seals sometime. It looks like they are having fun. If I dove in with them would they bite my nibblets off or try to have carnal knowledge of me. (Not that either would necessarily discourage me.)

I was once told that when an animal dies at the zoo, they feed the carcass to the lions, hyenas, etc. Any truth to that?

It seems a lot more efficient then trying to bury an elephant.
good one!if not, why not? Health reasons, or just because it would be disturbing to the public?
both.
Does no one watch nature shows? I'd pay to see this (cheaper than going to Africa).

depends on what you are into. It's always cool to see a Lion rip apart a big hunk of meat. Polar bears are super badass. They say they enjoy the taste of human flesh. Of course I'm not sure how you would actually test that theory legally.

no webcam, but we have a fairly active youtube group. I'm fairly sure i'm in at least one of those videos

WPZ youtube

ETA. I was in the hippos eating pumpkins video but looks like I got edited out.

(1) Why doesn't Herbert-the-Hippo like monkees?

(2) Can you really train an orangutan to punch when you say the phrase "Right turn, Clyde"?

(3) Ever had to care for a Komodo Dragon?

(4) Ever had relatively good communications/bond with a specific animal? If so, what kind?
1. I don't know. They are dirty, dirty animals. They are not my favorite either, but the great apes are very charismatic. My least favorite to work with are Macaques. They carry a form of the Herpes B virus that is fatal to humans. When working our Lion-tailed Macaques you have to wear a full tyvek suit duct taped at wrists and ankles, mask, gloves, goggles etc. Not a lot of fun.2. Certainly

3. No, but I have worked other large monitor lizards.

4. Lots. The strongest was probably with a Harris' Hawk that I trained at Disney. Birds of Prey typically form strong bonds with only one person.
What happened with the Harris Hawk after you left Disney to go back to the West Coast?

unlikely about the leopard bite. I would question the integrity of your friend's story.zoo for dogs would be the pound. Some zoos use dogs as companion animals though. The cheetah at the San Diego zoo's education show lives with a golden retriever.I've never been to Ireland so your friend must be mistaken. Maybe she lost her mind after that leopard bite.

By the way, thanks for doing this thread. It's been both funny and interesting. This is one of the better threads I have seen in a while.

none taken, zoos aren't for everyone.

Become a certified scuba diver and you can swim with them in the wild pretty easily. I've done a lot of diving in Monterey, CA. They are very inquisitive and unlikely to try to eat you or have teh sex.One of my favorite diving memories is doing a night dive at monastery beach in Monterey. we ran into a group of sea lions and they would use our dive lights to help them hunt. Shine your light on a fish and the next thing you know a sea lion zooms into view to grab the fish.pretty fun for me, probably not as much for the fish.

remember the video of that chunky german chick getting owned by polar bears cause she jumped in their enclosure?

what would be the dumbest enclosure for an overweight german broad to jump into?

assuming snakes are completely enclosed and cannot be accessed, ditto venmous insects

What is your favorite zoo that you've visited?

Since sharks are immune to every known disease are they doing any research to find out if we can harness something in their blood for the betterment of man? I'd think it may not work since it looks like we evolved from different points but who knows.

Do Silverbacks have enough brainpower to learn even rudimentary levels of MMA? It would be super bad ### to have an MMA trained Silverback.

Unfortunately they closed that particular show. I believe he was moved to the Memphis Zoo.

Do polar bears & penquins really get along the way they do in cartoons?
Polar Bears live at the North Pole and penguins live at the South Pole. Come on guy.
It would seem they have no prior feuds, so why not? Is it like West coast vs. East coast rap?
Maybe polar bears wouldn't like the taste of penguins and they could work it out? I don't know. Since all the ice caps in the north pole are melting we should ship a few to the south pole to see what happens.couldn't be worse than what happened to this poor polar bear

A polar bear that swam more than 200 miles in near-freezing waters to reach Iceland was shot on arrival in case it posed a threat to humans.

The bear, thought to be the first to reach the country in at least 15 years, was killed after local police claimed it was a danger to humans, triggering an outcry from animal lovers. Police claimed it was not possible to sedate the bear.

The operation to kill the animal was captured on film.

The adult male, weighing 250kg, was presumed to have swum some 200 miles from Greenland, or from a distant chunk of Arctic ice, to Skagafjordur in northern Iceland.

"There was fog up in the hills and we took the decision to kill the bear before it could disappear into the fog," said the police spokesman Petur Bjornsson.

Iceland's environment minister, Thorunn Sveinbjarnardottir, gave the green light for police to shoot the bear because the correct tranquiliser would have taken 24 hours to be flown in, the Icelandic news channel Visir.is reported.

Sveinbjarnardottir's account was disputed by the chief vet in the town of Blönduó, Egill Steingrímsson, who said he had the drugs necessary to immobilise the bear in the boot of his car. "If the narcotics gun would have been sent by plane, it would have arrived within an hour," he said. "They could keep tabs on the bear for that long."

Steingrímsson also criticised police for not closing a mountain road where people congregated after hearing news of the bear. "There were around 50 to 60 people there watching. The police did not have many options when the bear ran down the hill, approaching the crowd," Steingrimsson said. "I'm very unsatisfied that the police did not try to catch it alive and did not close the road."

The oldest record of polar bears being sighted in Iceland is from 890, 16 years after the first settlers arrived. The last visit was in 1993, when sailors saw a bear swimming off the coast of Strandir. It was also killed.

Polar bears were frequently tamed during the middle ages, but since then no bear has been captured alive in Iceland. Receding North Pole ice is diminishing their hunting and mating grounds and jeopardising their survival.

A spokesman for PolarWorld, a German group dedicated to the preservation of the polar regions and the creatures which inhabit it, called the bear's death "an avoidable tragedy ... another great day for mankind".

How do you not become too emotionally attached to some of the animals? I would think they would become like pets and that would be tough when their time comes.

Also, Let's say a Grizzly bear wanders into the Polar Bear enclosure and we have a 1 on 1 fight.. who wins and why?

How many animals have biten you?Have any of your former coworkers been killed or maimed?
I've only been bitten once, by a raccoon. It was my fault so I wasn't mad, but it hurt like hell and required stitches on my thumb. Since most keepers are required to get rabies vaccinated, it was a non issue otherwise.I haven't personally known anyone that has been killed or maimed, but I know a lot of the stories.
