Some of you know we have a Footballguys Discord server that is active.

Ask Me Anything events where a Staffer shows up at a planned time and answers questions is a popular thing across all type of forums. Including our Discord.

I wondered if there would be an interest here from the Shark Pool in having a Footballguys Staffer schedule some AMAs here where folks can ask their fantasy football questions. It's possible we could turn them into articles as well.

Some sites limit these to only people who've purchased a premium subscription but I'd like to try them here to the full Shark Pool.

As we were talking about this with staff, the folks on our Discord wanted these and I wondered if there would be an interest in doing them here.

So I'm asking.

What do you think?

Lots of the staff are younger now and Discords are where lots of the young folks do community these days. They like that format.

I still prefer the old school message board format like we have here.

As they were talking about AMAs on Discord, I'm always the guy on staff that reps the Shark Pool, and I said we should do them here too.

Lots of people have read and not much interest. For sure, that's a small sample of the overall forum, but it's helpful to know. That's fine as finding out reality was why I asked.

I'm all for this, Joe.

We're in the same demographic. I think discord is a hot mess, and have no interest in it. I'm also not a fan of social media, in general, and have little to nothing to do with it, although I have no problem with most people who do, although the Attention Whores really try my patience.

Yes, those of us who have been here from the beginning remember the days when the Staff (former and current) were active in the Pool, and I don't think I'm the only one that misses that. Some of both former and current Staff got their start as Members here, and some former Staff are still active here, post-Staff (you know who you are!).

This kind of interaction, to the best of my knowledge, would add to 'uniqueness' of the product you have in the marketplace, and would likely help bring traffic, especially new traffic, to the Forums, which is something you've indicated you're interested in doing.

Make it so. 100%.

I asked as several posters had told me they appreciated when in the past, FBG Staffers were a part of the forum.

Thought this might be a good way to try and get back to that.
I was one of those posters. While I wouldn't mind an AMA, I'm not a huge fan of the format as it lends itself to gut responses and not responses like this https://forums.footballguys.com/threads/why-chris-boswell-is-ranked-so-low.814939/post-25144865.

I've tried the Discord, maybe I'm doing it wrong, but not much going on and the content is about 2% as good as the content here. I don't understand why we innovate ourselves to inferior just because t's an Ap.

Thanks. I'm with you on the Discord feeling like a lot going on. Differnet folks like different things and I like this format. Maybe because it's just what I've always used.

We'll table the AMA idea for here now. It seem super obvious there is very little interest. It's odd as the Discord folks clamor for them. I know Yahoo's discord does these super well too as our friend Matt Harmon just did one. And we've done some on Reddit that got at ton of interest. Not sure why there's so little interest here but it's good to know before we spent effort in coordinating and asking people to spend time on this.

We'll likely keep them in discord for now and maybe check back in the future.

I think it would be a great idea. I would be all for it. Any time we can bring additional knowledgeable people into the forum it broadens the information/perspective/etc which is a benefit to everyone.

I don't see any negative, and appreciate you listening to what people have requested and offering to make this available, but just for me I would not put any value on it or would be anything I'd request because I feel like it's what we already do with one another.
One of the goals of building a community is for the community to operate on its own. Not completely on its own, but one where the community is driving the conversation with each other. The Shark Pool is a perfect example of this. It is so amazing the Shark Pool has become a literal pool of Sharks. I enjoy my time on here interacting with everyone... mostly on the movie threads haha.

I find the same topics and information discussed in both. One is served on a red plate, the other on a blue plate. Discord feels like an on-going conversation in a vague category you can just jump into, where the Forums are more organized into very specific topics. Both are great, but I agree @Joe Bryant, when you have 25+ years experience using one format, it obviously is going to work best for you.

Great stuff folks!

The idea of a timed AMA thread seems like it's counter intuitive for a message board. Would you consider having an AMA thread for each (or at least most) staffers that are available anytime? I know that's more work for each staffer, but checking a thread once a day might be a better use of their time than a timed event for this message board. The benefit of that, for users, would be the ability to discuss articles/rankings/hottakes as they come out with the person who wrote them. Again, probably too much time spent by staffers on "non-production" material, but it would certainly be helpful for users and might stir some extra thought/insight for the staffer.

The message board approach is more like a slow burn where you don't have to be available at a certain time. You can post questions/comments/etc and the staffer can almost peruse on their own timeline and answer accordingly. It then is there for all to see when they are available.

You won't necessarily get the immediate back and forth but you can also get (maybe) more thought out responses at times to go along with the off the cuff responses. My very limited experience on the discord is that it is very fast and things get lost in the shuffle and passed over at times and then it is lost. The message board has a little more longevity to it where you can more easily go back for the history in a more organized way to look for something you may have missed.

Good point. It would need to be set up where the staffer checks in on the thread once or twice a day for a few days.

We can 100% do this if this is something you'd like. I agree an AMA thread a staffer can just hop in once or twice a day would absolutely work. This is a format I'd probably prefer over the mad rush AMA's before game time! We will talk on this!

So I'm asking.

What do you think?

I'm intrigued.
I'm a weekly listener to the feel it or you-know-what- it pod and just in to say, thanks to you and Matt for your work and entertainment. Part of my regular podcast diet.

@Joe Bryant I would most interested in team specific insider/beat reporters if you have industry partners/ guest posters. For instance, Greg Bedard to talk about the Patriots. BSJ has an AMA format on their article/ chat format so it would be well within what he typically does. It could be sold as good exposure for their publications during a time when there's not that much to cover. I think more team-coaching-player usage focused AMA of team insiders would be super useful for honing projections.

Food for thought.
