Asomugha contract voided, now a free agent (1 Viewer)

This has Dan Synder written ALL over it.
I thought Dan only was interested in over-hyped players. He has the goods to be a difference-maker in the secondary, like only one or two others. As a Cowboys fan, I would be ok to get rid of both Jenkins and Newman and let Nnamdi cover both sides of the field.

I was just coming to post something very similar.PLEASE let/make this happen!

I would love to see a team that already has a top CB sign him.

The way so many NFL QBs ignore a top one and simply throw to the opposite side of the field, this would feel like payback. Fans would finally get to see matchups that they thought would be intriguing in previous years, but the QB just threw away from them.

As of now, I think he's the marquee offseason guy. I think Asomugha is going to be the highest paid free agent. The new CBA will show us if he makes Haynesworth $ or if it's reasonable, but this is the guy IMO.

Al Davis is soooooooooo stooopid.
Wasn't Aso guaranteed some absurd amount of money next season? Maybe the Raiders will try and re-sign him anyway
I'm sure that's just what a premier player in the league wants to do is sign back with a team whose coaching carousel is similar to Hugh Hefner's relationship status for less money than he would make on the open market. Even if he was supposed to make a ridiculous sum next year I can't believe that the Raiders would let this clause slip in and then lose him for nothing. Raiders fans should be pissed (again) but I'm sure they'll come running in saying Aso is overrated and defend the ineptitude of Al Davis once again.

He is a hell of a player....but his contract is going to be alot of Jack. I'd rather Dallas look at Champ.
Not like Champ is going to come cheap. 2-3 years older.Better than what we have, so sure...I guess. But, seriously, pay the extra dough for the better/younger corner.

good news for the Jets IMO.

Having Aso out there lowers the relative value of Cromartie.

Of course, it could also mean that whatever team that really needs a DB and misses on Aso will just overpay Cromartie anyway

Do we really need 32 posts saying "I hope he signs with my team!"???

Anyway, here is the story:

Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha's contract voided and he will be allowed to become a free agent without the Oakland Raiders being able to use their franchise tag on him, Raiders senior executive John Herrera confirmed Sunday.

Asomugha’s deal included a little-known clause that said his contract would void if he didn’t achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010 -- and he didn'’t.

His contract also contained a stipulation that if he didn’t achieve his incentives, the Raiders would agree not to designate him their franchise or transition player.

To achieve his incentives, Asomugha had to play in a greater number of defensive plays in 2010 than he did in 2009, and this season Asomugha played in only 14 games whereas he played in all 16 in 2009.

He also could have achieved his incentives by improving upon on his interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season -- but he didn't have any interceptions, fumble recoveries or sacks this season.

He will be the top defensive player available whenever free agency begins.

I wonder why the Raiders would sign him to such a dumb contract. It's almost like guaranteeing that he wouldn't play as hard in 2010 as he did in 2009.

It was unlikely they were going to keep him this year anyway. He was due the average of the top 5 QB's in the league. A huge chunk of change.

Davis must have escaped from the closest the Raiders front office had him locked in.

The vibes have been all negative since the end of the season:

1. Fired a coach that posted the best record in 7+ years

2. Strong negative reaction from players

3. High number of free agents not likely to return

4. Likely losing Asomugha and Seymour to free agency

The debate is dead. The Raiders will never make the playoffs again while Davis is running the team.

There was a debate?

At this point, I can't see the Jets not re-signing Cromartie after the pick turned into a 2nd rounder with yesterday's win. I don't think they'd give up a 2nd rounder fora 1 year rental.

This is a must for Dallas. He makes every player on the defense a more effective player. Half the field taken away. What ever team signs this guy will be getting a difference maker.

He was going to be a free agent, and the Raiders gave him the ridiculous contract they did to keep him as long as they could. He pretty much got franchised. It's a bummer he is a free agent, but it had to happen. They had to overpay him to keep him off the free agent market. It wouldn't surprise me if he re-signs, the Raiders were prepared to pay him 16 mill this year, is anyone else willing to? He's from N. Cali, went to Cal, and is active in the community. Not saying its likely, but I am not discounting it.I am OK with the offseason if Hue is promoted. I didn't realize what a fantastic coach Cable was until he wasn't brought back. Some of these posters need to provide links to their effusive praise of Cable from a few months ago, I must have missed it. Actually, all I recall was negative talk, pretty much right up until he was let go. Weird how that happens.

3. High number of free agents not likely to return
Please unpack this, I'd love to know which Raiders aren't returning. Always a treat when I come across someone with the inside info on multiple players' offseason plans!

No, I agree. Anytime you can fire a head coach that prepared a team that went undefeated in its division and for the best season in nearly a decade...you just gotta' do it.You just haven't had enough coaches this decade, either.

You will be lucky if there won't be 32 entire threads saying "My team has to sign him or they are being cheap and not trying their best to improve the team."Adomugha is about 30 and having earned quality money, I think that just being the team with the biggest check (sorry Daniel S.) will not be enough. This will be his chance to go to a winning organization or at least be a closing piece for a team that's close, why bother going to teams which can only offer hope instead of a pattern of winning.

Hey, I get it, you're being facetious!I wanted to keep Cable, for the sake of continuity. Not because he was a great coach. And IMO, the greatest reason for their turnaround was the ouster of JaMarcus and the arrival of Hue Jackson. Cable was the best choice at the time, after the Kiffin debacle. He was on the staff, the team liked him, and respected him. No one pretended he was a great prospect as a head coach, and I don't expect to see teams beating his door down to fill any vacancies any time soon.

Why would you let the best corner in the NFL go? Very very dumb. With that being said OMG I HOPE HE COMES TO THE EAGLES!!11!!

The comment is based on what I have heard on Sirius the past day or so. This morning they replayed Lechler's interview where he expressed is frustration about the decision to let Cable go. He is very unhappy about it and sounds like he wants out. Lechler also mentioned talking with Gallery, who is apparently a free agent and indicated he is not likely to speak with the Raiders about returning. The Raiders have 20+ players who will be free agents this year. Firing a coach who had the best record over the past 7 years sends a very strange message to the team and fans alike.Personally I have been on the fence about Cable. This was the first year in a very long time that I can recall seeing a Raider team play with consistent passion through 16 games. I think Cable was on the right track. And since Al doesn't not pay coaches it takes time to learn the how to be a head coach. Now they start from ground zero with a new coach. Has to be considered a step backwards. And with AL dragging his feet on Hue, it could be a major step backwards if Hue decides he doesn't want to deal with Al's nonsense.

Just so I am clear, what should the Raiders have done? Besides "not let him go "?
I think the poster was suggesting that the Raiders not let him go. Clearly, nothing today or yesterday or last month would have prevented this. But, perhaps, during his last contract negotiations, he should have been signed for longer term.

Anybody know of any short lists that may exist, or at this point is he keeping his options open?

Read the Details

I encourage you to read the details of the contract before jumping on the Raiders. The contract was going to be voided this year when he didn't break his 2009 numbers. It was a previously agreed to stipulation in the contract.

The Cable talk in this thread is silly. Cable seems to be getting the credit for what Hue Jackson accomplished with his offence this year. Like massraider pointed it already, it would have been great to keep Cable for some consistency. But at $2.5 mill/year I'm not sure he is worth it. The Raiders aren't the 49ers or the Dolphins and be throwing money around at HC's anytime soon.

Sure, Cable went 6-0 in the division... but before you crown him the best thing for the Raiders lets look at closely at those games:

*Campbell started 5 of those games, even though Cable wanted Gradkowski to start basically the entire season

*In the one divisional game that Gradkowski started, Campbell came in off the bench after Gradkowski was injured.

And sure going 6-0 in the division is great. But it's better if you can tie those victories to more then 2 other wins the entire season. Cable was also the same coach that went 0-6 against the rest of the AFC, and 2 and 2 against the NFC.
