He caught a double gutshot straight draw on the turn, so either a 9 or K would give him the straight. He was getting 2:1 on the turn, so the call was based on implied odds. He had six clean, nut outs, and two more dangerous outs (the 9s and Ks, which put a flush on board). The 9s hit, so he had to keep the bet fairly small.

also the double gutter is a hard hand for people to put you on, so when it does hit you tend to get paid off.if the board is 9 10 x, and you hold q/j you aren't gonna get paid off very often if a k or 8 hit b/c it lacks deception.

Up pretty early today(woke up before 9:00 which is very strange for me). Would like to start playing, but its tough getting a game right now. Party has just started 6 max tables at $10/20 NLHE and they have about 6 or 7 of those running right now but no full games at all! I hope this is just a fad and not a trend. I much prefer full ring games to shorthanded games.

I wouldn't count on it. Poker(all forms of hold'em anyway) seem to be going the way of 6max. I'm with you, I hate this but I guess it's time to adapt.

I so much prefer 6 max. In fact, I refuse to sit at a full ring. If the 6-max tables are filled on Stars, I look to the rings that are still half-full. When they fill up, I get up and move.

Preflop: Standard limping hand. Lets see a flop.On the flop: I have a gutshot straight draw and 2 guys in the pot...lets take a chance at winning a huge pot.

On the turn: I now have a double gutshot which is my favorite kind of draw because its very deceptive yet still hits a decent amount. This guy has bet a huge amount. AJ is a likely hand. If I hit my straight and the flush doesn't come out to scare him, I could check raise him all in and he'd probably call it. Its worth the risk.

On the river: Ah, stupid flush came out, which is obviously going to scare him. I'm good though...no way he'd bet that much on a flush draw, especially since he was last to act. Lets value bet and take what we can get...might even put him on tilt that I was drawing to this hand and hit it.

If the flush draw was never there, then I definitely like my play. With the flush draw out there(and with 2 opponents on the flop it was a possibility that one of them was drawing to it), my play is more marginal. I could've laid this down, but I don't mind plays like this because they give me a loose table image, which I love having.

I wouldn't always play it like this. Sometimes I'd fold on the flop. Many times I'd fold on the turn. Let me restate though that if the flush draw wasn't there, then I'd always play it like this.

On the river: Ah, stupid flush came out, which is obviously going to scare him. I'm good though...no way he'd bet that much on a flush draw, especially since he was last to act. Lets value bet and take what we can get...might even put him on tilt that I was drawing to this hand and hit it.

If the flush draw was never there, then I definitely like my play. With the flush draw out there(and with 2 opponents on the flop it was a possibility that one of them was drawing to it), my play is more marginal. I could've laid this down, but I don't mind plays like this because they give me a loose table image, which I love having.

I wouldn't always play it like this. Sometimes I'd fold on the flop. Many times I'd fold on the turn. Let me restate though that if the flush draw wasn't there, then I'd always play it like this.

Tough day yesterday. Frustrating to get deep in tourneys in back to back days and not have a ton to show for it. Party is down for some reason right now, so I think I’m going to play some heads up matches at Stars. Maybe 3 or 4 at a time. I might really try to make run today and try to get up $5K playing in the $1K heads up matches and reward myself by entering a $5K heads up match. Worth taking a shot maybe.

Well Party is back up now, and its totally new and different! I don't even know where to begin. The first thing I noticed is that they have $530 STTs, which means I may have to go back to STTs if I find that those games are loose. For now, I'm just going to go back to the heads up matches at Stars until Party gets all of the quirks out of the way and I understand all the new stuff(if anyone wants to explain it all to me, go ahead).

IMHO, you need to dial down your aggression just a little bit in these heads-up matches. These aren't bad beats you are taking, you are just being outplayed by players who are just waiting for a spot to let you beat yourself.

Heads-up tournies are my best game. After taking a beating last night at the ring games I went over to the $500 and $1k heads-up and cleared three in a row (and with ease, progressively building up a larger stack and draining them). These were all situations where the blinds were still relatively small, and I think it's uinnecessary to risk your chips when better hands are out there.

You're by far the better poker player, so my comments probably aren't all that helpful, but this is an area where I have had some great success.

There is nothing wrong with calling down smaller pots. You dont need to stack someone everytime.

There is nothing wrong with calling down smaller pots. You dont need to stack someone everytime.

I do this quite a bit, to mix it up and to get to a cheaper showdown on a questionable hand that I may not be sure of.The most important thing to me in these Heads-up matches is that these are generally NOT won and lost on the big pots or on preflop or postflop all-ins (at least not at these stakes). It's the slow and steady collection of smaller pots over time, where you build up some momentum and get the other player back on his heels, that tends to make the difference. I rarely, even with the nuts, go for the gusto. I would rather drain him of 500 chips guaranteed than risk pushing and chasing him out.

One other point - I think you're crazy to multi-table heads-up matches, particularly with $1k on the line at a clip. These things are so fast paced and so much dependant on getting a "feel" for your opponent and the flow of the match. You just can't do that multi-tabling them.

Hell, if you can know off just one of these every 30-45 minutes, at $1k a clip, that's pretty damn nice.

I think its tough to judge me based upon a few hands. I really do feel like I was getting terrible luck today(I only posted the last hand of each one, but there were a few times where I had them all in and shortstacked and they sucked out), but I won't hide behind that excuse. I lost, and I'll accept that.Regardless, I'm done with heads up play for now. I'm really motivated to have a great session tonight, so I'm going to play my bread and butter($10/20 NL) and have a great night.
