Asset Management Software - Suggestions and Thoughts (1 Viewer)

SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
So the company I work for has zero asset management. It's kind of amazing. Every other company I've ever worked for tracked pretty much everything. We are in the process of buying a lot of new equipment for our 300+ stores and I suggested it might be time to start doing asset management. They agreed.

Only problem is, I have no actual hands on experience with it. So I started looking up some options and I found some stuff on the internet. Amazingly, I found things that look great. And oddly, they are free. But that doesn't make sense to me. Why are they offering free software? I figure I must be missing something. Anyway, I know a lot won't have any helpful advice, but if anyone deals with this, I figured it would be worth a shot to ask on this board. Seems like this board always has at least one person who knows something about every topic.

What type of equipment?

How have they tracked it in the past for their financials and tax returns?
iPads and iPods are the main thing. But if it all goes well, probably computers and peripherals as well.

As for the current tracking. None that I know of. It really is odd. Unless there is something they are doing way behind the scenes, I honestly don't understand it.

The software is free because the support isn't.

I'm a little confused about what you are looking for, not financial software. Not a WMS or an ERP, just a way to track where company iPads/Pods go?

Am I correct in stating this isn't inventory?

It's to be used to keep track where the Apple items are. They get shipped back for repairs, new ones shipped out... things like that. We just want to be able to see where the equipment is at any given time. Keep track of where it's been, what's been done to it. I used the term asset management, but that may not be the correct term. Like I said, I've never been involved with it before. We just need a way to keep track of our equipment.

Sounds like Excel would be sufficient enough.
Were talking about 2000+ pieces of equipment to start. I've thought about this route, but it just seems like it would be a huge hassle. That's why I was wondering if there was some easy software out there that would make it easier.
