At what point is it dangerous not to moderate Social Media? (1 Viewer)

To clarify, who are you asking should or could do the moderating? Kirk Cousins? The Redskins, his employer? Someone else?
Um, Instagram. How would the Redskins moderate this? lol
Well I thought you were talking about employers, who do ask for their employees' FB and social media information sometimes. Employers most definitely do tell their employees what they can and cannot say online as themselves, even though the employer itself does not man the switches.

- But in the situation you're talking, absolutely, positively hell no should any social media site have control over your content.
Yes they should. They own the site/app and have every right to police it to create the environment they want. It's like saying Target has no right to tell people how they can behave inside their store or the Lions have no right to monitor the behaviors of fans at the game.
Ok. What if you post something about a business or a businessman or a politician and they don't like what the creator of the profile says. Should they be able to complain to the social media site and get information taken down and ask for data behind users' contents and comments and the like?

What if the social media company itself just doesn't like content. Could they just take it down as objectionable?
Sure. We are posting on a website owned a business. They can monitor their space however they want. If it is overly moderated might cause people to leave for other spaces, but Facebook or Instagram have the right to monitor abd censor content however they wish.

If we're talking about saying mean things about each other ('be excellent to each other' being the rule), I agree. This is one of the most civil places I've seen on the internet and I don't post anywhere else now. So the benefits are obvious.

However IMO the internet is a wonderful place to learn information and to share it and if we create too broad of a standard we will lose a lot of that and I don't think it's worth it. Ideally if I could see someone take down the lowlife comments under Cousin's nice post about rescuing a shelter dog I would.

So what do we do with this, and the tens of thousands of comments jut like them on social media? I mean this isn't an anonymous football board, these are people posting pictures and videos of themselves. It is not some dark corner of the internet, it's pretty much the center of the internet.

So? What do you guys think?
They should hire A-Rud. This place probably gets boring to mod.

Use the same filters they use here. FB and Instagram would be like the Bible Belt.

I read that Michigan player got death threats after the loss to Michigan State, and he's only in college. Disgusting.

Some people take sports way too seriously.

I saw something that traced back the death threats and almost every single one was from a teenager.

If you get a death or bomb threat you are safe. If you are truly targeted there will be no warning.

Well we could start bit not sharing everything we do with a bunch of people we don't know. I don't Instagram,Snapchat, Facebook, any of that crap. If I want someone to share the fun of my new kitten with me I email pictures to people who might care and enjoy them. Seems to work and I don't get people wishing my family dead.

If you insist on sharing with the world expect dooshes. Have you met people? They often suck.

One of the fun/sad parts of places that allow comments is to read the replies.Political places are the worst but sports is not far behind. My conclusion is the world is full of angry, dumb idiots.

Free speech is great until it bothers you but you have to draw the line at some point. We had two local teens down in my area over the last week who made threats online about killing students at a local school. They were reported and arrested so at least the people that saw this posted online acted and got them before they acted it out.

Link to story on the school situation-http://wtvr.com/2015/10/26/spotsylvania-students-plotted-to-make-bomb-threat-shoot-students-as-they-exited/

:goodposting: I enjoy reading Twitter for football stuff and browsing pics on Instagram, but in general I despise social media. I can't comprehend the desire to share every moment in real time. Last night we went out to dinner and then a concert. ####### selfies at dinner, then constant pics and song updates uploaded to FB. How are even enjoying the moment if you're constantly interrupting it for that crap?

- But in the situation you're talking, absolutely, positively hell no should any social media site have control over your content.

As for celebrities and famous people at some point they typically hire someone to moderate such stuff.
It's not like this would be breaking some new ground. Basically any public internet site you post on can control your content. You can't personally attack someone on FBG. You can't upload a video of you beheading someone on youtube. You can't upload a pick of goatse as a comment response on facebook.

It's not like it would be outside of the norm for social media to come up with a "no personal attacks" rule. Heck, I'd say it's more common to have that rule than not on most spots on the internet.
Right, agreed, but it's the standard that's truly "dangerous" not random dipshts saying cruel things to people online (and for the record, yeah saying something about someone's deceased parents could indeed be a violation of terms of use/abuse, I'd like to see that merde taken down as well). - However you don't see where a 'no personal attacks' rule could run afoul of problems?

What if you post news items critical of businesses, or businessmen or politicians? If you hand over control of content except in extreme examples (like the ones you mentioned) then you are killing one of the most beautiful and important elements of the internet, free expression and dissemination of information.
Isn't there a "no personal attacks" rule here?

Social media is just like any internet forum of the past, they're free to create their own rules (Terms of Service) and moderate their content however they see fit.

I'd like to see a social media app get popular that requires identity verification (like when you open a bank acct, check your credit score, etc...). If this existed and some celebrities started deciding to use it instead of what is out there now, it would cut down on stuff like this. (You would also get more accurate 'followers' numbers which some celebs would like and some would hate, but marketing firms would appreciate.) Obviously not fullproof but would be a good start and a money-maker for the developer.

I think a celeb showing off their adoption of a rescue dog or whatever can do a lot of good. It's too bad they have to either ignore all replies or put up with reading all the bs. Can't even let your kids peruse your own currently.

I'm not for regulation but I think there is an opportunity for some better options out there.

He has a strong mind, I know that. He didn't throw a temper tantrum and blow up a thread, someone's inbox and their profile feed with emotional ##### and ##### and ### and ######### just because his feelings got hurt.

As far as this thread, half the posters in here have mentioned Butters/South Park. The episode they are referencing might be a good one to check out as it deals with social media/internet bullying.

Dangerous? Moderation is supposed to keep you safe? The question makes zero sense to me.

The only purpose I see for social media is advertising. Since I currently don't have any need for that I don't subscribe to any of it.

Here are a couple of links for you. Yes, it can be dangerous.
Blaming moderation of social media for bullying? That's a huge leap and quite the disguised thread topic. I would have started with moderation by the parent. Too easy to blame the tool instead of the training on how to use it properly.

You wanted examples of how it social media is dangerous, I gave it to you. Not sure how it's a huge leap, it's part of the conversation.

An example of a danger that originates with social media would be better. Otherwise better off attacking the source (not the tool).

I mean we can get into the recruiting of followers by Islamic Fundamentalists on social media also (and to a lesser extent actual operations). Sure the final stages take place on the dark internet but the initial volleys are often times in plain sight. That goes to monitoring more than moderation but moderation is certainly a part of understanding hate speeches and movements specifically designed to kill and maim.

Parental controls may work for younger children but once these kids reach a certain age, they have go arounds they learn from their friends and such. Aliases, private groups, the anonymous internet, etc. It's a big world out there.

And everything you mentioned is something with its roots elsewhere. We know the profile for radicalization and it isn't caused by posts on a chat board. We know what makes children susceptible to bullying and again that has it's roots somewhere other than Twitter. So there is a lot to be done elsewhere.

We are starting to see the law catch-up and people are being prosecuted when online bullying leads to issues. We are seeing harassment being dealt with under the law before it leads to trouble. But you can only go so far unless you prefer the UKs version of free speech. Personally not a fan.
