Auction logistics? (1 Viewer)

Our league has agreed to go to an auction format (no keeper or dynasty), but the actual rules have not been sent out. I have not seen any articles or threads on how an auction should be run. Do you still go around the table in the order of nominations? Someone mentioned reversing direction around the table each time. How would an auctioneer settle things if people are allowed to just yell out the next bid? Someone i know mentioned that you go around the table and if you don't bid during a particular round, then you can't bid on that player later in the bidding. This seems unfair to the person furthest from the nominator, if auctionining is supposed to allow everyone a fair chance. Any tips for an auctioneer if it is just open bidding and arguing? What are the rules you guys have for auction logistics?

Our nomination order is determined by the final placement from the previous year. For example: Champion nominates 1st, second place goes next, etc. - it repeats in the same order ...............

If you do the above suggestion please make them sit in that order. Otherwise you get the dreaded "oh is it my turn" syndrome. We have last years champ start the nominations off and then just go around the room letting each owner nominate one player at a time. As long as you all take turns, it really doesn't matter. We don't let owners skip nominating a player and if you nominate a player you must state a starting bid. No fair saying "Barry Sanders" and when no ones bids just going to the next owner. You nominated him? He's on IR? Looks like he's yours for a $1.IMHO the idea of taking turns bidding is completely lame. Have you EVER seen that happen at a real auction? No. Why? Because people wouldn't stand for it. You shouldn't either. If at all possible have a non owner who knows FF as your auctioneer. It makes life so much easier. Trust the turnip on this one. We tried hiring a real auctioneer one year but he was a dolt and tried to chat us up constantly. That was a bad idea. We tried having owners take turns as auctioneer and that was passable but some don't want to take their turn, etc. It can be a mess.We give the auctioneer complete control. If owner A and owner B both yell a bid out at the same time, the auctioneer points at whoever they heard first. If you really want the guy, just bid another buck. It's nice to have a knowledgeable auctioneer because they know to let the bidding drag out for a while on players like LT and to pound the hammer quick on $2 kickers. We have found that $200 for a cap works great. Bidding is only allowed in whole dollar amounts (unless you want to be there till 2 in the morning then by all means use pennies). We tried $100 to start with but feel that $200 gives you a little more flexibility, especially with the cheaper players. Any other questions?

Of course you have to sit in the order of last years standings. The Commish (me) places name tags on the tables prior to the draft so everyone knows where to sit.
