AuctionGuys - How do you determine whose name your throw out (1 Viewer)

Note: I have never been in an auction league. Been playing in multiple leagues for 13+ years and can't get any group to do one. With that said, i did a draft the other night and a few of us discussed it on the side and chances are I will be doing my first in 2011.

This is not a general strategy question when it comes to auctions overall. I am really trying to dig down to one specific aspect of the auction. I leterally do not eve know how to phrase it, but somehow, some way, someone is the first to call out a name (first callout overall...woohoo!).

1) How does your league determine who is the first to call out the first "overall name"?

2) When you are said individual, what is your strategy?

A) Do you go for a typical 1st or 2nd rounder?

B) Do you choose a random player you want or do NOT want?

C) Do you start easy with a kicker or D or Austin Collie-type?

While auctions are super because anyone can get any player they want (at least once), and there is strategy threaded throughout, I have always wondered if there is strategy behind the first "election of a player".

1) Usually numbers are drawn.2) A) Yes.B) Choose a player you do NOT want. You want to achieve two things and will. #1. Gain a sense of a scale as to the position of the said player. If you have MJD in mind, throw ADP out there to gain an idea of the dollars your competition may be willing to pay for that caliber of player at that position.#2. You want to burn up your opponents salaries. Make them spend it!C) No.

1) How does your league determine who is the first to call out the first "overall name"?

First your first season, probably draw number or names out of a hat. For the seasons after that, we have the league champ from the year before nominate the first player. Then we just go around the table.

2) When you are said individual, what is your strategy?

A) Do you go for a typical 1st or 2nd rounder?

For the most part, I nominate players that I DO NOT want and I let the bidding begin. I will usually nominate players that would normailly be ranked higher then the players I am looking for. Becaue I try to get the other owners to spend thier money first...

B) Do you choose a random player you want or do NOT want?

Mostly Players that I DO NOT want. But I try to keep eveyone honest and throw out players that I DO want sometimes. It really is a matter of getting to know the other owners. In the first year, I would see if I know other players that the other owners may want. Such as: If I know owner #2 is a Colts fan, I would throw out Payton Manning and hope that he over bids on him.

C) Do you start easy with a kicker or D or Austin Collie-type?

I will never start a Defense or Kicker until the end....

Bottom line, is that you need to get to know the other owners and thier tendancies..Every once in a while I will throw out an lesser known rookie early in the auction and have him slip through cheap. The only problem now, is that the other owners know this, so some are alot more prepared for this, so it is harder to get away with.

Good Luck

We usually have the Champ throw out the first name and down the line after that. The best adjustment that we made over the years was to let anyone jump in the bidding anytime. That really sped things up. I NEVER throw out guys I actually want until it gets down to the end. Under 15 bucks left for me usually. That means you can draw out the other guys funds earlier and get more bang for your buck. I threw out a couple good kickers and d's last week in the first four rounds and they went higher than they would have otherwise. I also like to throw out some known sleepers that I dont like as guys will overbid on them leaving more talent at the end. In my auctions we also have possible keepers which affects things a lil bit too. Auction is the best imo. :football:

Get in on an auction league and you might never go back - and yes, there is strategy.

We draw cards - Ace first, 2 second, and so on

In the begining of the draft when top players and other owners draft points are still plentiful I always nominate the best/highest ranked player that I do not want. Let the other owners go nuts and spend all their $. If a player I want goes up early I get in when I think the value is around 70% of where I expect him to go and then figure it out from there. Be prepared to spend on the guys you want or you will regret it later on. When the top players start thining out I start to name guys I want - I think it's important to figure out exactly where you stand $-wise at this point. If 'your' QB1 is still out there how much will it cost you to get him? This year for me I got him for way less than I expected and it really helped me on depth picks later on to know that I had the extra $ to spend. In general I have to say that for the first 2 or 3 seasons I read the 'Perfect Auction Draft' article and most of what I'm saying here is based on that thought process with a few tweaks that work for me.Another thing I tried this year that really worked out was creating a small spreadsheet program that I ran behind Draft Dominator. I seperated the players I was targeting by position and inserted the values I was expecting to get them at creating a team with the $200 I had to start the draft. I also included several other player that were second choices for me at each position and the same idea on the values. As I landed a players I was targeting I adjusted the $ if it was different from my prediction and I got a 'live' picture of where I was overall. Maybe it was a bt of luck but I think it came down to preperation, thanks FBG, but in filling an 18 man roster I only ended up with 2 players that were completely off my target board and in both cases they were upgrades over players on my list that went for bargin prices. In the end like any other traditional draft you have to be flexible and ready to alter your plan. The difference here is that you don't have the luxury of sitting back and waiting until it's your turn to pick again - the next player nominated might be the guy you need to fill the spot of the one you just let get away. I love auction drafts - can you tell???

all you need to know right here.

Yep, I also throw out an expensive player, usually a RB, who I know will go for a lot. Burn a good chunk of someone's money right off the bat.
