Austin Collie is quickly becoming Wes Welker 2.0 (1 Viewer)

Who would have thought that Austin Collie would be the #1 wr in fantasy football three weeks into the season? When you conisder all the options that the Colts have I would have never guessed that Collie would emerge the way he has.

The Colts are using Collie in a somewhat similar fashion that the Patriots have been using Wes Welker. Except if Collie can keep it up he will be better because the Colts look to him at the goal line.

Yesterday alone Collie had 16 targets, 12 catches, 171 yards and 2 td's. At the pace he is going he will end up with 1,914 yards 144 recptions and 16 td's.... Obviously he would never be able to keep up that pace but I am starting to think he isn't going away any time soon.

Collie is feasting off the double teams and #1 cb's that are usually throw Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clarke's way. Pierre Garcon plays a different game than Collie does and it doesn't seem like Gonzalez is coming back anytime soon. If those statements hold Collie would continue in his Welker type role and continue to put up huge numbers.

Am I missing something here? For some reason I want to sell high on Collie, but I just can't bring myself to do it. If the trend holds Collie may very well up a top ten wr in 2010 and be the steal of the draft along with A.Foster.

Do you think Collie remains a stud or will he come back to earth?

Manning is on pace for 675 passing attempts. That's 100 more than last year (which was already higher than his other seasons). I would guess the Colts won't air it out quite that much this season.

I agree that he won't have 675 attempts, but their defense is pretty weak. I could see them getting into a lot of shootouts where he throws a ton and tops last years total.

I'm sure he won't stay on pace at the rate he's going but what a find if you were lucky to snag him late in the draft or on the waiver wire. He's going to be a great WR#3 with #2 upside as a late/late round pick. Sure wish I had him..

The Colts have little confidence in their run game and their passing game is almost like running. Manning is completing 70% of his throws and has a 117 QB rating. 9 TD's and 0 Ints.

To put things in perspective, there are currently 4 QB on pace for 5000+ passing yards. There are 8 guys that at this rate would go over 600 passing attempts. It's early, and there will not be that many players having video gamesque totals by the time the season's over.

Stokley's career year in Indy netted him 68 rec, 1077 yds and 10 TDs. If Collie hits that I'm sure his owners will be pleased. I can't imagine he'll keep up his current pace but I can see him beating Stokley's year in yards and receptions. 10 TDs might be tough as TDs are hard to predict.

yeah, but he doesn't need to throw 675 times --- if he was on a 600 attempt pace over these last 3 games and you adjust collie's numbers accordingly, he'd still be averaging something like 8/100+/1.I'm not saying he'll keep that up over the course of the season, but manning should throw enough to make the guy a worthwhile fantasy starter.

I'm curious, do folks ever look at the reasoning behind the stats or do they just click the box score and that's it? I'm not trying to insult anyone but Indy could not run the ball last week. They have Pierre Garcon, one of their starting wideouts OUT with an injury, and their #4 WR Antony Gonzalez Out with an injury. Denver was missing their starting DBs and what they did have was trying to double cover Reggie Wayne. Do you think the DC for the Broncos was thinking "We gotta stop Collie!"

Collie will have some big games as he did last year too...no doubt but it wouldn't surprise me if this week he had a very avg day and owners chase points like they usually do.

Of course not, but Manning might get close though. Manning could have his best season ever considering the Colts will not be benching him the last three weeks like they did a few years ago during his magical year. Manning can go a whole season without a bad game. The others will have a few bad games.

I agree with you, but I think about the only relevant thing you mentioned was garcon being out.maybe indy couldn't run the ball, but they were also one attempt away from being last in the league in rush attempts last year, so I doubt that's a fluke.collie might've faced an undermanned secondary, but playing the slot in 3 wr sets means he'll probably generally be facing the softer coverage.I doubt anybody's looking for 12/170/2 every week, but just the fact that he can hit that makes him a pretty decent wr2 in an offense that was the only one with 400+ completions last year --- his rookie season.

Do you think if someone is posting in these shark infested waters that they only 'click on the box score and that's it'? Everybody swimmin' through these waters knows Garcon was OUT and Gonzo is injured, AGAIN.I think the OP was looking for opinions on whether or not Collie is a sell high or is his upside enough to hang onto the dude. I am struggling with the same predicament, sell high or ride the wave..I agree that not many, if any, defensive coordinators will be game planning for Collie, making his value stout, even with the inevitable return of Garcon (and Gonzo). Obviously his numbers will not soar as they have but its really hard to deal the guy when he leads all other WRs in yards, receptions and tied for TDs.Manning is high on him, Caldwell is high on him. He will continue to get his.Fwiw.>>>Player News: Tue. Sept. 28: WR Austin Collie has set single-game career highs in two of the first three games of the 2010 season. Coach Jim Caldwell isn't surprised. "He's one of those guys that you could see it when he walked in the door. He was intent on learning and not in a superficial way. He really works at improving his craft. He's really trying to find ways of earnestly getting better. He's not doing it to impress you or me or anybody else. It's innate within him. He's one of those guys that instinctively just has a burning desire to get better, and that's what I think more so than anything else that jumps out about him," Caldwell said.>>>

Seriously, this is what bothers me. Collie and Welker have nothing in common except the fact that they are white WR's. Thats it.

All I meant was that they are targeted a ton by their great qb's in high flying offenses. Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe a it was a bad comparison.

I honestly think hes legit. I wouldn't sell him. Peyton clearly has full trust in him now. I legitimately think he can continue to put up welker-like numbers.

Especially with how much the colts are throwing.

I think it will be one of those things, just like Welker, where you think "he can't possibly do this every week" and ends up doing it every week.

It's scary because he scores touchdowns as well. Welker only had 4 touchdowns in 14 games last year and Collie already has 4 through 3.

Not to mention the catch %. He has caught a whopping 27 catches out of his 32 targets.

Hang on and enjoy the ride to the championship. He is an ideal flex player in a PPR league.

3 of the 60 WRS (5%) on rosters in my league are white. Your league may be a little more diverse but I think it's safe to say it's a rarity. Of course people are going to draw comparisons to them in the same manner black QBs and coaches draw comparisons to each other. Fact is all three aforementioned WRs are at best 2nd fiddle on their team to what would be generally regarded as more established and athletic receivers that draw coverage away. All play in offenses currently in top ten, with QB's currently in the top 10 in fantasy points in the majority of leagues. I personally don't see how one CAN'T compare them, much less be so racially sensitive to claim it bothers them.In response to the original post, I am not selling Collie but I am selling my WR2, which I feel I can get more for, and taking the risk of Collie on myself.
