Austin Collie (1 Viewer)

Coach Chuck Pagano said that Collie -- who was taken to the locker room to be assessed for concussion symptoms during Sunday's preseason game against the Steelers -- will be evaluated further in the next few days, the Indianapolis Star reports.Analysis: Though there's no word yet on the severity of Collie's issue, assuming he is concussed, as suspected, then it would be doubtful that he'll play again this preseason. Collie's injury history -- he suffered two concussions that ended his 2010 season -- makes this situation particularly worrisome, so as long as his situation is cloudy, he'll come with a "buyer beware" label.
Big red flags IMO. He's almost certainly concussed.

pretty bummed...drafted him yesterday as my 4th WR in the 10th round of a 12 team 0.5ppr...i'll probably hold on to him until i hear "season ending"...but man i'm bummed

if it was a concussion this could mean career ending... if it isn't, it's still a scare and you have to temper your expectations of the kid this season for obvious reasons...

:(

Larry Foote may have just ended Collie's career.Seriously
LOL, everyone is a doctor in here. Could he be cuncussed and could his career be over? yes. Are you guys doing the same thing ESPN and the entire media world does in jumping the gun? yes. If ESPN, or other media, was saying he was cuncussed with out actual reporter/team sources, would you be ripping them? yes. All reason why the SP has taken a nose dive, everyone is asserting opinion as fact when in rewality no facts about Collies condition has been released, all is just assumptions. Agreed, it does not look good, but coming here and causing more panic for people who want information is in no way helpful, because this is not information.

To be fair, he did say "may have", it's not like he said he was finished. And until something definitive is released there will be a lot of assumptions, that's just the way it goes.

Who asserted opinion as fact? Who claimed to have any medical expertise.I said MAY have ended his career. The word is used to "indicate possibility."It's obviously speculation and was stated as such. If anyone panics from something posted on here that is obviously one person's speculation without doing their own research then that's on them.Lots of problems in the shark pool. This is has nothing to do with them.

I just drafted Austin Collie in the 12th round yesterday around noon, 9 hours later his career could be over and I'm in the market for a new WR4.

Was really high on Collie and it's a shame, he's incredibly talented. For some reason he's just a magnet for blowup decapitating hits, I don't know why.
Concerning thing to me was that play didn't look particually hard.
I know why. He's smallish.

and what if it isn't a concussion? does it really matter at this point? he took another huge hit and is feeling the effects. if this one isn't career ending, will the next one be? how about the next one? collie is retirement waiting to happen at this point, regardless if this is or isn't a concussion.ETA: i guess what i'm trying to say is what information could you possibly be looking for? the writing is already on the wall if you ask me... and i'm not a doctor but i don't think it takes one to figure this out.

Wow. Is that Monday morning stress or something? From what I was reading people are discussing what it might mean for Collie IF he suffered another concussion which seems like a valid discussion at this point after what happened last night. My personal view is that just like Jahvid Best I would at this point pull Austin Collie off my draft lists. I don't want either of those players at any price at this time.

I have to agree with this line of thinking. Even if they come out today and say we did checks as a precaution and its all fine, I know last night it wasn't a BIG hit and he wobbled trying to get himself right. That would leave me holding my breath every time the guy ran a route. that tells me there is too much obvious risk to draft him on anything I NEED..So I would only take him as a late round "doesn't matter" type of player.

if for one am glad this was posted because it probably takes him off my draft list at this point. I was going to throw a late round pick at him but now I'll likely move in another direction.

:goodposting:Collie has been on my do not draft list for a while, and this situation just illustrates why.

Per Colts coach Chuck Pagano, WR Austin Collie did suffer a concussion Sunday. Said he felt fine but is day to day.

He had 4 years as an NFL player. I wish him luck in his next career. Any doctor that clears him to play football again should have their license taken away.

As much talent as guys like Collie & Best may have, they will get little help from the NFL who already have their lawyers on red alert as far as future damage control goes.

Just wondering what some of the FBG board doctors think about the roughly 10 concussions Troy Aikman suffered. One of them knocked him out for 10 minutes, and he had blood coming out his ear.

He says he is suffering no long lasting affects from them.

I'll defer to the FBG board doctors though. They certainly can diagnose Collie from behind their computer screen.

If I recall correctly I read an article about concussions and about 1 in 10 or it may have been 1 in 20 people that have multiple concussions never have any long lasting affects. Troy Aikman might just be the lucky one.

Just think of all the concussions fighters get while sparring and then the actual fights.

So now we know it is a concussion. Collie did say he was feeling fine. I also read he was day to day, but obviously precautions will be taken and I am guessing he is done for the preseason at the very least and then who knows.

Collie's agent, Don Yee, said it's premature to conclude whether his client suffered a concussion. "He's going through the normal protocol," Yee told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "We just don't know yet (whether he has a concussion)."Spin:Colts head coach Chuck Pagano had said Monday that Collie had suffered a concussion. It may only be a battle of semantics as any head trauma is a serious issue for a player who has suffered two concussions and two head trauma incidents in the past two years. Collie will need to pass a number of concussion tests before he returns and his injury risk will likely severely reduce his draft day value.

Are people here really actually going to come down on someone who thinks that it's a strong possibility that a guy with a history of time missed due to serious concussions will be held out of game action by a league that is currently being sued for letting guys with bad concussions play?

Throw out everything you know about players playing through in Troy aikman's playing days. This is a completely different nfl boys. I find it strange that I even feel the need to say this it's so damn obvious. Collie is one big concussion (or small) away from him involuntarily calling it a career.

On the other hand, he's 46. Look how long it took before Muhammad Ali was a bumbling sad case. Aikman could see results still down the road.

Collie last season was the poster boy for concussions, much like Jahvid Best this year. I don't see any way he returns to the field quickly. I scooped up Brazil because of this. No way he plays 16 games this year.

Pagano says Colts will err on side of caution with Collie

Posted by Mike Florio on August 21, 2012, 8:04 AM EDT

AP

Thanks to a pair of blows to the head (neither of which were penalized) while he was in a defenseless posture on Sunday against the Steelers, Colts receiver Austin Collie has another concussion.

And while coach Chuck Pagano told reporters on Monday that Collie is “day-to-day,” Pagano’s stated attitude toward player safety suggests that Collie won’t be back any day soon.

“Again, player safety is first and foremost,” Pagano said, via comments transcribed and distributed by the team. “We are always going to err on the side of caution as we talked about before. I’m more interested in the health of these guys than just throwing them back out there. Obviously, he came in and felt really good today, which was positive for us. We’ll just take it day-to-day with him but we’ll be smart.”

As to whether the smart move will be to fine Larry Foote for the forearm blast he applied to Collie’s helmet, Pagano defers to 345 Park Avenue.

“That will be up to the league to decide when they review the tape,” Pagano said. “Those things happen so fast. They’re bang-bang plays a lot of them, as you guys know. That’s totally up to the league to decide.”

Pagano wasn’t asked about whether cornerback Ike Taylor should be fined. He also went high on Collie’s head from behind just before Foote hit Collie from the front.

Regardless of whether the concussion happened from one or more illegal hits, Collie is back in the gears of the league’s concussion protocol. And with each additional concussion he suffers, it’s hard not to wonder when doctors will decide to prevent him from ever risking another one.

Do people even remember he played all of 2011 without getting a concussion?

That's a good point.I'll admit that before looking more closely at him I was under the impression that his concussion issues were last season not 2010.I think everyone, (Collie, Colts, FF owners need to precede with the utmost caution), however my guess right now would be that he attempts to play at some point this year. I would not draft him but he will likely be one of better options available on the ww if and when he plays.FWIW- I hope that he is able to play and avoid being further concussed. For his health and also for another quality WR option for FF.

Scary development for Collie. I had him as a great value in the subscriber contest as his role had expanded. Didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but the guy should retire.

I'm taking Collie off my list and targeting who's next in line. FBG's has Avery next on the depth chart and he's only $5. Far from a sure thing given the injury history but the WR2 in the Colts might not be a bad pickup given the value.

Let's say COllie is done, what do you guys think of the WR spot now?

I have a question for other Collie owners. If you are one of those who say that he should retire, do you keep him on your roster? If you really believe that Collie's life is in danger, shouldn't you drop him from your roster and make sure you are not a contributing factor to his declining health?

Of course not.

For the simple reason that Collie is a grown man and can make his own decision. The same way people smoke cigarettes, or eat 2 Big Macs for lunch every day. Everyone says that he should retire before it's too late. But, most of those same people won't drop him or would be ready to scoop him up off the waiver wire the first week he was back in the starting lineup.

I find it strange that most people on this board think they are doctors, and are privy to Austin Collie's medical chart. Obviously he is a proceed with caution in redraft leagues at this point. The reality is though that he's had just as many concussions in his career as Greg Jennings, and nobody is putting Jennings on their do not draft list. If Collie truly came in to the Colts facility the day after the game and was feeling great, as his coach suggests, then he's doing a lot better than Jennings did after his latest concussion. Jennings said he spent a lot of his time in quiet, dark rooms trying to get over his headaches. Honestly, I'm not a doctor, and I doubt I'd understand their charts even if somebody showed them to me. So I don't pretend to know if one is a bigger risk for concussion than the other going forward.

I fail to see the relation. Are you somehow attempting to imply that Austin Collie would be more likely to retire if people dropped him from their fantasy team?

As a Collie owner on a couple of dynasty leagues and just considering managing my teams I hope he is ready for week 1 and comes in and has a very good season. I may be trying to move him later in the season or after this year hoping people start forgetting a bit about his concussions and his value climbs to the point where I can get some decent value for him. He is a pretty solid WR when he is on the field.

Yes, it sounds ridiculous. I was just trying to make the point that Collie's situation will not be decided by Fantasy Football owners. It will be made by Collie and the Colts. If he plays week one, he is just as relevant. Actually, if he truly feels well, and the Dr's clear him, this could be a good sign for Collie. Maybe all this talk about multiple concussions by the "experts" is wrong. Every person and every injury is different. Let's not paint with a broad stroke.Everyone that drafted him last year and this year, did so thinkin one more concussion could end his career. But, nobody knows. He could suffer 3 more concussions and play 8 more years in the league.

I had my trainer perform all the basic concussion tests today; you know: Memory and concentration

Vision

Hearing

Strength and sensation

Balance

Coordination

Reflexes

We've seen worse but yeah he has a concussion and we'll probably let him go with an injury settlement, to big of risk.

He could but, our interests aside, we are very likely looking at the Jahvid Best scenario from last year. The coach is going to put a positive spin on it but he can't know what doctors will say tomorrow, next week or next month. He still has to be cleared. Jahvid Best wasn't officially ruled out for the next game until the Friday after. All along coaches were saying he experienced "symptoms of a concussion" after the game but that they expected him back sometime soon.I will be very interested to hear Dr. Jene's take but I can't imagine it will be entirely optimistic.

Sure, but they also account that he now has 4 in less that two calendar years. that's the part that is scary because at some point, the number is the number. If a guy get to 6 or 7, even if they were 5 years in the making, that's still 6 or 7 concussions. And the thing that really concerned me this time was it wasn't like it was a HUGE hit. And i know, that doesn't really define anything but in your head you just have to wonder "if the kid can get concussed on a routine play and we know that concussions are said to be progressive in the fact that once concussed, subsequent ones can be triggered easier, just how many hits can he take?"

Also 2 of Collie's concussions were the KTFO type. This past one may not have been bad, but the fact he even got knocked out by that blow is crazy. Most players wouldn't have gotten KO'ed by the recent hit he took.

I hear what you're saying but you don't have to be a doctor to make a fantasy football decision on how to view a player for draft or keeper purposes by analyzing his date of health. People prognosticate on that all the time. AP is not a first rounder this year bc people are making educate guesses about his 2012 performance based in the knowledge they have of his leg injury. You don't have to be a dr to Undertand that the nfl is under intense scrutiny for letting players' brains then into mush from multiple concussions and getting early onset Alzheimer's in their 50's and memory problems and impaired motor functions etc etc. You also don't need to be a dr to o serve how careful the nfl has become with treating and clearing players these days after concussions. This is a clear trend. Collie miss a large portion of 2010 from devastating concussions. You don't have to be a dr to evaluate him as a tremendous risk for being shut down for the season or career of he suffers another one. At some point his adp will fall to a level where he is draftable given that risk. Or it won't and he won't be on any of my teams. At this point of I had to draft today I wouldn't touch him unless I could get him as a late round flyer. And I am a HUGE fan of his talents. I drifted him in my dynasty leagues rookie draft in his rookie year. Perhaps he will be fine from this latest concussion and go on to have a great year. But if he suffers another one during the season their is a strong likelihood that he will get shut down. A much greater risk than for another player who has not had highly publicized concussions. Collie is on the NFLs watch list like jahvid best. That's all I'm saying.

I watched that hit live. I don't think he was knocked out. He was "staggered" by the blow. Nothing like his first two concussions, those were horrific.

I still have to wonder, what if he passes his concussion tests in a week or two? Do you consider Collie any worse than he was at the start of the 2011 season? He was labeled as being concussion prone. But, he played an entire season without issue. He has been labeled as being one concussion away from retiring. If he doesn't retire after this one, and is cleared to play, can you assume that he will retire after the next one?

My point still remains, Fantasy Football owners can "guess" whatever they want. Half of them will be wrong and the other half right. In the end, if Collie comes back, I will have him in my lineup as the #3 WR until he stops playing. If he can't be smart about his own life, what difference does it make to me.
