Report: Jets part ways with Kevan Barlow

The New York Daily News reports the Jets have released Kevan Barlow.

Barlow's agent informed the Daily News of Barlow's release. After four TDs in the first four games of 2006, Barlow was ineffective and finished with a league-worst 2.8 yards-per-carry. The move saves $2.6 million under the cap and gives the Jets room to bring in competition for Cedric Houston as the power back in their committee with Leon Washington. Feb. 21 - 3:35 pm et

He will probably get a shot somewhere but this guy just seems to be done.
If you mean a shot at making another team I agree. Having a shot at significant playing time has come and gone.

You are probably right, but seems people were saying that last year about Travis Henry ...Just sayin ...
It's not impossible to repeat Henry's career resurrection, but let's be honest and say that that would represent the exception and is not a reasonable expectation.

Henry was hurt in 2005 (only 88 rushes), and Barlow just sucks. That's the difference.

What do you guys think this does to Washington's value? Will he split w/Houston? Any chance he becomes the focal point at RB?

At this point in time Henry has shown significantly more than Barlow...

Isn't he approaching bust status?

 Henry has at least put up several seasons of top 10 RB output previously. Barlow is just a flat out bust.

Not if he really is a bust, which it's really starting to look that way.

either one of these guys could do a nice stacey mack impersonation

(Duckett or Barlow)

Henry and Barlow are really not very similar. Henry is a hard-working RB without a whole lot of talent, who battled through injuries to put up solid numbers in Buffalo, and got pushed out because of team politics. (A decision that seems quite foolish in retrospect). It's not really a surprise that he became effective elsewhere; he still works hard. Barlow was a flashy backup RB who looked like he could be a huge stud, and then stumbled when given the full-time starting job, partly because of poor work ethic and attitude. Henry just needed another chance. Barlow needs a fundamental change.

I'll always remember Barlow's arrogance when he outplayed Garrison Hearst and won the starting job at the end of that season. Remebmer after one TD he runs up to the camera yelling "the future has arrived!"

I think the future has left. Putz.

I think Barlow was always just an average back. His whole career I've been trying to find out what makes him special and I could never come up with one. All I knew was that he was putting up decent numbers when splitting with hearst. Never knew what it was that made him outplay hearst. Still dont know.

What do you guys think this does to Washington's value? Will he split w/Houston? Any chance he becomes the focal point at RB?
I think the Barlow release was expected by most people. My take on Washington is that he is some version of player between Kevin Faulk and Warrick Dunn. Jets fans can answer better, but everyting that I read is that they are going to bring in someone for Washington to play 2nd fiddle/3rd down back to.

While the Jets could bring in another RB (and almost certainly will), I'm not sure it will be a high profile FA or even a day one draft pick. Washington didn't do anything on the field that says he can't be a 20 touch RB, but opinions run rampant on that subject. I would not look for another failed RB like a Duckett to be brought in either. If they can get Turner for a second rounder, that would not surprise me, but I don't think they will surrender their first.

The Jets have several pressing needs that I think they are more concerned with headed into the 2007 season.

The Jets are one of about 7-8 teams that I think need a serious upgrade at RB...the problem is that there really are not a lot of good RB coming out in the draft. They might look at Bush at the end of the 1st...Kenny Irons would be anme you could see in the 2nd round. I don't think they are happy with where they are at in the backfield just yet.

I do feel like Mangini is going to implement a 2 back system as much as possible and that does not bode well for FF woners looking for top production from the NYJ RB slot.

There are fewer and fewer teams where you can rely on a RB to get the lion's share of the work or even 20+ touches a game.

I'm not so sure..... the Jets ran 62% of their running plays last year between the guards, and only two other teams in the NFL ran it up the gut more often. IMO, they are running to a weakness, not a strength there. mangold and Kendall are decent run blockers, but RG Moore isn't. Ferguson frankly sucks at run blocking. As of now, there is no RT on the roster to speak of. I think, and hope that the Jets run outside more often, using Mangold and Ferguson's ability to pull and block in space, something both are very good at. Irons.... I just don't get that .... he's Leon Washington II. Bush, maybe, Irons? No way. I think the Jets will sit on the RB situation, and take one on day two. Washington did nothing on the field that says he can't handle a Warrick Dunn sort of load, it's only his size that makes people keep saying he can't be a 20 touch RB. From the few comments that this regime makes, they don't seem convinced that Leon can't be a 20 touch guy either.

Irons at least has the frame to get bigger, Washington is probably the biggest he could/should get. IMO, Irons is a less quick/shifty version of Cadillac, assuming he puts on 15 lbs. like Caddy did.

you mean like... Barlow :bag: They'd get him for cheap and would make great competition for Houston.

Oh, by the way, Congratulations on your Colts winning the Super Bowl.
