Ruud looked fine. Unfortunately, two issues caught up to him. First, the Bucs faced only 41 tackle opportunities. Not as horrid as what Ray Lewis and Lofa Tatupu faced, but still below average. Secondly, and possibly more importantly, was the relatively poor play of the Buc DL. The Bates defense can be huge for the MLB, but the Achilles heel is DT play. If blockers consistently get to Ruud or the ends can't get upfield enough to funnel plays inside, Ruud must shed more blocks and will find his range limited. The surrounding cast isn't anything special, but Hayes and Phillips are good enough in run support to leave Ruud a split second off the tackle if it continues. I'm not yet certain that's a primary factor, but it bears watching. If Ruud struggles in the box score in a future game with better opportunity, his outlook takes a big hit. For now, I think it's safe to chalk it up to one of the three or four games a year your LB1 puts up a disappointing five solos or less.
