Baseball Free Agency Rumors... (1 Viewer)

Does anyone think that there will be collusion charges made by the union and agents in the near futire?70 million for an elite player like Vlad??It wasn't that long ago where Darren Dreifort, a guy who had never been healthy, and who owned a career LOSING record was given something like a 55 million contract by the Dodgers.

Most of the owners take it too personally to make any secret agreements. When push comes to shove most of them would be too tempted by a free agent to stick to a secret agreement not to pay over $_____ for a guy.I'd credit it more to the internet stock burst and general economic downturn, which caused owner's portfolios to drastically drop at the same time as the public had a lot less money to spend on luxuries like taking the kids out to the ball game.I mean, really, thinking that a marquis free agent like Vlad going for "only" $14 mil per year just could he could have gotten $20 mil in 2000 is like saying Yahoo is underpriced at $48 because it was $175 or whatever in 2000.

I'm sure by the middle of the season, a lawsuit will be filed. I can't believe Vlad was signed only six weeks before pitchers and catchers! And IRod hasn't signed on anywhere yet and he won a World Series ring!Met fans should tear down that armpit of a stadium known as Shea in response to this. How they misread the free agent market year after year is an insult to their fans.

According to BP's Will Carroll, "Roger Clemens will sign a one year deal with the Houston Astros," with the amount expected to be in the $5-7 million range. :rotflmao: :hot:

Might help lower that team +6.00 ERA

It's the singer Kenny Rogers, not the pitcher. I wonder how far one of Nelson's flat curves will travel in that band box!

Can somebody explain to me where the Angels got the money to sign Kelvim Escobar, Bartolo Colon, Jose Guillen, and Vladimir Guerrero? And resign Adam Kennedy? And they still have Kevin Appier's contract on their books and they still haven't traded Jarrod Washburn or Ramon Ortiz which they have been rumored to be doing.I am a bitter Yankee fan as the Angels signed Vladimir to a little bit of a larger contract than what the Yankees signed Sheffield for.

HOUSTON --Roger Clemens and the Astros have reached agreement on a one-year contract that will pay the six-time Cy Young Award winner about $5 million to play next season, Houston television station KRIV reported Monday.___________ :hot: :hot: :hot: :hot: :hot: :hot: :hot: What an ahole. I hope his arm falls off in spring training. Thank God that piece of scum is off my team.

Why is he an #####? He wasn't under contract to the Yankees anymore. Its not like he got the Boss to void a contract and then came to Houston. He was a FREE AGENT.HERD

Yankees were just another team who gave the Rocket money. He has no loyalty to them. Maybe the NY fans will realize what those beantowners have been saying all along.

I never liked him on my team - I've said so here a number of times.I'm getting sick and tired of players in all sports retiring then coming back. And in his case it is sickning considering the "farewell" tour that he went through. I could care less who he plays for and thankfully I won't have to watch him anymore, but its just another low class move by him.

The Mets announced that Mo Vaughn will not play this season due to a degenerative left knee, the Associated Press reports.

Jim Rome actually had a good crack about this...Said Mo can now continue on his music career, after winning "American Idol" last year. :rotflmao:

Rotoworld.com seems to think he'll slide into the #3 spot..
nah...Gonzalez, Zambrano and Waechter should fill the top-3...not that it matters after the first week and a half anyways.

Waechter is not a #3 starter. On any team... Personally I think Moss will be the best starter currently on that staff... unless my Middle Tennessee State boy Dewon Brazelton gets his act together.. ;)

honestly, Waechter was really good coming down the stretch last year...with another off-season, people are expecting nice things from him.he's one of their best pitching prospects.

oh, wanted to add that Brazelton apparently blew them away in the Arizona Fall League this year, so he does have a nice chance of making the squad.Still, that guy was a loon last year...he needs some more seasoning, IMO.

Braves ink Branyan to minor league deal....... am I the only one that thinks if they would give him the 3B job that he could come in and do some serious damage in that lineup? Why not give him a shot over DeRosa?
That guy swings like a left-handed Dave Kingman.I thought coming up with Cleveland that he was going to replace Albert Belle's stats, but he has a grand Canyond sized hole in his swing to ever be truly effective on a regular basis.

there is no doubting the hole in his swing just like there is no doubting his gigantic bat...I got a chance to watch the guy hit in Cincy some last year and it just puzzled me how he could be such a threat and yet rarely cash in on it. It seemed like everytime he came up, you thought he was gonna go deep.. but 50% of the time he K'd. All that I meant by my statement was that Atlanta does not have their future at 3rd with DeRosa, they have a utility infielder trying to fill an everyday role.. by giving Branyan a chance... there is little to lose and a whole lot of potential that could be tapped into..

Just some updates.Putz boy Boone is out for the year. Local radio here says that the Yanks will most likely go with Erik Almonte at 3rd and go for a change if needed at the deadline. But who knows. Also, ESPN is reporting that Robb Nen might be out for the year. Anyone hear anything on that?

No Relief? Giants Uncertain about Nenn's Return.Schmidt Should Return as Scheduled in AprilSAN FRANCISCO -- Trainer Stan Conte isn't sure when closer Robb Nen will pitch again for the San Francisco Giants, or how his troublesome shoulder will react when he does."We think it's likely that he's going to do fine, but we're not 100 percent sure as we are with other players," Conte said in a conference call Tuesday night. "The bottom line on this is we haven't mapped out a specific plan for him in spring. You simply have to cross some hurdles to make sure he's ready, and when he's ready we'll put him out there."Yet Conte expects ace Jason Schmidt to be ready by early April,as planned. Schmidt, recovering from elbow surgery, might throw off the mound for the first time next week.Nen, a three-time All-Star who had 43 saves and a 2.20 ERA in 2002, didn't pitch last year after right shoulder surgery May 7 to repair a torn tendon. He has been rehabbing and is throwing off a mound a couple times a week."I told (general manager) Brian Sabean he'll be ready opening day or he'll probably never be ready," Conte told The Associated Press earlier Tuesday in a telephone interview. "The extent of his surgeries can in fact be career-ending. We're very cautious, not even cautiously optimistic."And with good reason.Nen's shoulder did not respond well to operations in November 2002 and April 18, 2003. The 34-year-old Nen, the Giants' career leader in saves with 206, was on the disabled list all last season. He has 314 saves in his 11-year career."The poor guy has been doing rehab for three years, doing what we've asked him to do, and has thrown off the mound," Conte said. "The bottom line on Robb Nen is we will not know until he has a rehab assignment, so we're going to hold judgment on this until he pitches. I'm not going to be upbeat about Robb Nen all the way through until he picks up his 45th save. I don't want to put a lot of pressure on him."Conte saw Nen two weeks ago in Arizona and the two talk several times a week.Schmidt had surgery in October on his right elbow to remove scar tissue and repair a tear in the tendon.Schmidt, who has been hampered by elbow tendinitis several times in his career, was the NL starter in his first All-Star game last season, pitching two scoreless innings on short rest. His elbow flared up the following day.He will be limited early in spring training"He's been throwing for about a month and is having no problems with his elbow," Conte said. "We will be careful with him early on to make sure he's strong enough to get through."Schmidt's elbow gave him more problems on breaking pitches late last season. "Until he throws a curveball in competition we'll be holding our breath," Conte said. The lanky right-hander missed a turn and his sore elbow limited him down the stretch for the NL West champions. After Schmidt pitched a three-hit shutout in the Giants' 2-0 Game 1 win over the Florida Marlins in the NL division series, rookie Jerome Williams started Game 4 over Schmidt, who would have been pitching on three days' rest. Manager Felipe Alou was criticized for the move, but said Schmidt was physically unable to go.Schmidt had a breakout season in 2003, going 17-5 with the National League's lowest ERA (2.34).In addition to Schmidt, right-hander Jesse Foppert also is recovering from elbow surgery late in his rookie season. He had reconstructive surgery in September and won't be ready to pitch again until this September. He has been working with Conte in San Francisco and is throwing on flat ground."We're going to be ultra cautious and conservative and not put pressure on these guys to be ready by a certain date," Conte said. "With all these pitchers you just can't tell until they get into competition whether they'll hold together."
Here's the info from ESPN.

Here is a blurp from an article from giants.mlb.com denying the report...

SAN FRANCISCO -- Despite a story indicating rehabbing Giants pitcher Robb Nen is "likely" to miss the 2004 season, trainer Stan Conte stated quite emphatically Tuesday night the reverse was true, that the veteran closer's right shoulder should be healthy by the end of Spring Training.

Barring a major setback.

"Nothing has changed as to Robb's prognosis or his health, and he's continuing his rehab program without incident," said Conte of the Giants' all-time saves leader, who underwent the last of three corrective surgeries May 7 and didn't pitch last season. "He's been throwing off the mound since early January and his arm is getting stronger."

Sounds good to me
 me too! It's not like he is replacing Jeter in the lineup this time. He'll be batting 9th and with nowhere near the pressure he was under last year.

Check this out.... :o

================================

NEW YORK -- The third-base situation is a hot topic in New York, as the Yankees look to replace Aaron Boone, whose untimely knee injury has left the Yankees in a tight spot. With few options on the free-agent market, talk has even turned to a very unlikely candidate -- Gary Sheffield.

If Boone, who suffered the injury playing pickup basketball last week, has a torn ACL as reported, he will be out for the season, and the Yankees will have to find another option at the hot corner.

Sheffield, who signed a three-year, $39 million contract in December to play right field for New York, began his career as an infielder, starting at third base exclusively from 1990-93 for the Brewers, Padres and Marlins. Though he has not played a single game at third base in 11 years (Sheffield has played the outfield since 1994), a return to the hot corner isn't out of the question.

According to a published report, Sheffield told general manager Brian Cashman that he would play third base if necessary. Sheffield made his offer public Tuesday, when he spoke at the Baseball Assistance Team dinner in New York. Cashman could not be reached for comment.

If Sheffield remains in the outfield, the other in-house candidates include Miguel Cairo, Enrique Wilson and Drew Henson, though none of those names jump out as a long-term solution.

Ask the Mets pitchers how many runs they gave up when the Mets moved Bobby Bonilla back to third base after a decade in the outfield.

Hot New Rumor:Pudge to the Expos, but they must first clear some salary.so...Vidro to the OriolesHairston or Roberts plus young arm to Expos

Pudge signed with the Tigers, but we already knew that. Here is something funny...NEW YORK -- Drew Henson is giving up his baseball glove and putting his shoulder pads back on. Henson's agent, Casey Close, told the New York Yankees that the third baseman is quitting after three mediocre seasons as a full-time minor leaguer. Henson will forfeit the $12 million he is owed from the contract he agreed to with the Yankees in 2001. "I am pleased to announce that I will be pursuing a career with the NFL," Henson said in a statement. "I have truly enjoyed playing professional baseball, but after a great deal of thought and discussions with the people closest to me, I have decided to make football my career." The NFL's Houston Texans, who hold the quarterback's rights, announced Monday that Henson would work out with the team Feb. 12 in a showcase for the other 31 NFL franchises.

burks to bosox IMO is a good move in the same way the a's signing eric karros is a good move (good situational DH with increased flexibility off the bench)...

Cubs still have an offer out to Maddux. Dodgers are interested but have to deal O Perez first. The difference is the Cubs don't need him while the Dodgers might overpay with a new owner trying to steal some of the headlines from the Angels.
