so hypothetically, if you are being followed by a bear, and you pick up a decent sized rock and hurl it right into the bear's nose, are you more likely to scare it off or piss it off?
Scare it off IMO, it's not like it's matsuki.
Any predator will be extremely wary of anything that can cause injury, since injury can interfere with the ability to eat, which can cause death.

If you are perceived as a threat, then you will probably be left alone - unless the predator is desperate or defensive.

In the wild, getting hurt is seriously -EV. The problem is convincing the bear that you can hurt it, particularly if the bear is especially hungry/desperate.

I guess if you're in a situation with a bear that looks like it'll strike you try to scare it with everything you have. Not like the outcome will be different if you don't scare it, may as well go down acting crazy. if you act crazy and end up scaring a big bear away it may give you self confidence like you never have had from that moment forward. You'd feel invincible and it could carry over to say something like business.
