Bears cut Mark Anderson (1 Viewer)

OK, I know we now have Peppers but why on earth did we let Alex Brown walk and then cut Anderson? BTW he was immediately snatched up by Houston.

Guy had 12 sacks as a rookie so he obviously has some talent. Any homers with any insight as to why we did this?

That sounds odd. He must have done something, right? Slept with someone's wife or failed a drug test or something? I can't imagine cutting a contributing DE making $1 mil at this point in the season.

Seems like lately the Bears have been a little too hot-handed in cutting players. Anderson hasn't lived up to his rookie year but you don't cut him. They probably could have gotten a 5th or 6th for him.

Mark Anderson had 16 sacks in his first 20 games as a Bear, but just 5 and a half over his last 46 games.
Is there anything that seems to be a cause for the drop off? Did they start using him differently? With the injuries and fall off of Tommy Harris, did Anderson become a guy who was getting double teamed? Anything along those lines that might help project to how he'll do playing in the Texans' situation?

The way that Bears D-lineman drop off has me concerned. In Anderson and Harris you have guys who proved to be immense talents as rookies. Since that year both have suffered gradual declines. I'm wondering if their mutual declines might not be coincidence. Thinking there might be a major lack of good d-line coaching going on.

I checked what my favorite packer beat-writer said about him in the game preview article a few weeks ago:

Anderson can flash up-field speed, scramble off a block and make a tackle in space. Put a TE over him and he can be run out of the stadium.

Here's the Scouts Inc report on him. They graded him a 68.

Comment: After only two starts in 2009, Anderson is slated to see more time in the Bears' defense this coming season. He plays with a high motor while making plays with instincts, effort and speed. He has good range in pursuit and can chase down ball carriers from the backside. Anderson uses his length and hand quickness to separate from blockers. He isn't powerful and can get smothered and locked up if larger blockers engage him early in the play. His speed and quickness allow him to get to the quarterback effectively. Anderson isn't great anchoring versus the run and often will give ground versus double teams or powerful blockers. He reacts well and appears to realize his limitations and adjusts accordingly.
Well, I was wondering if playing opposite Mario might free him up some, but come to think of it, I mean he's playing opposite Peppers right now and not getting it done. So I'm not sure he'll face much of a difference in terms of double teams or the like. I don't know how good the Bears tackles are inside, I could see doubling up Antonio Smith before anyone else if you've got 6 players in blocking against the Texans, and maybe Anderson was drawing the second double team against the Bears. But it might help him that he'll probably only play in pass rushing situations on the Texans, when Smith moves inside.

They have a pretty good back-up plan though, having signed Charles Grant who, in a stroke of luck for Jerry Angelo, was cut by the Omaha Nighthawks on Monday and somehow cleared UFL waivers to be available at no cost to the Bears!Grant made a deal with prosecutors in May in which he pleaded no contest to public fighting after he had been charged with involuntary manslaughter following an altercation outside a Georgia nightclub that led to a pregnant woman being shot and killed. Grant is also one of the active players in the league involved in the StarCaps case. He potentially faces a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's steroids policy when the case is completed.

We shouldve cut him 2 yrs ago...he has been a complete waste. I will take Charles Grant/Idonije rotation any day

Man.Above the Texans fan speaks of the good pickup by his team.

Let me say that Alex Brown has been a great pickup by MY Saints.

Here's what really gets me though: just read that Duh Bears have picked up.... {wait for it....} CHARLES GRANT!!! Our former 1st round castoff whom we replaced with Alex Brown.

Straight from the Omaha Nighthawks to Soldier Field. Did not see that one coming.

If Grant feels motivated and decides to work hard, he is capable of being a very, very good DE. He's fast, powerful, and was one hell of a high school running back, second only to Herschel Walker in a number of Georgia categories. He's also very, very lazy and happy to rest on his laurels. You know, if he ever gets any more.

I agree with this. Anderson was on my defensive steals list after the draft but he is a one trick pony. I don't understand the Bears cutting him outright instead of using him as a pass rush specialist on passing downs. Very strange since that's what I think the Texans will use him for.
