I was just looking at what the current leaders would have to do to top Jerry Rice Career rec yards, Tds, or receptions:
Jerry Rice's last year he was 42 but his last productive year was when he was 41.
Assuming that some current players could remain productive when their 41 this is
what they would need to over take him in the three main career receiving categories.
player age exp years avgRec avgyards avgtds
M. Harrison 35 11 6 88 1533 12.5
T. Owens 34 11 7 107 1597 12
R. Moss 30 9 11 79 1108 9
T. Holt 31 8 10 84 1222 13
Chad Johnson29 6 12 90 1330 13
R. Wayne 29 6 12 96 1451 13
S. Smith 28 6 13 92 1382 13
Prime Years averages(only counting season after they became an elite player and not counting big injury years)
S. Smith - - 3 91 1279 9
R. Wayne - - 3 82 1192 9
Chad Johnson - - 5 88 1319 8
T. Holt - - 7 94 1412 8
R. Moss - - 6 88 1395 13
T. Owens - - 8 82 1187 12
M. Harrison - - 8 103 1402 12.6
**not counting R. Moss last 3 years
Is more than likely then not none will make it but here is my top three list top break rice's record in each category within the next 15 years(trying to project beyond that would be hard)
Yards
1) T. Holt
2) C. Johnson
3) R. Moss
Rec
1)Harrison
2)Holt
3)R. Moss
4)C. Johnson
tds
1)Harrison
2)Owens
3)R. Moss
R. Moss is the wildcard. In my opinion he is the only one that can pass Jerry Rice in all categories within the next 15 years, but he also has the most uncertainty. it is very hard to see Moss re-starting his career and staying healthy for 11 years! Still for his age he has the least far to go.
I just don't see Harrison being capable of the yardage numbers in his current spot, even if wayne went down for his career and he got extra targets that is quite a feat. He did avg 1580 yards from 99' to 02', he has done it but over six years? Still 88+ rec and 12.5 tds a year for the next 6, seems possible.
After looking at the number what impressed me is that Holt actually has a shot of taking a couple of All time records away from Jerry. He probably has the best situation going forward and solid numbers so far in everything besides tds. I guess I just didn't realize how good this guy is, if he took those two records he could be in the greatest of all time WR argument.
Again I don't expect anyone to do it, but if it is going to happen in the next 15 years that is how I see the legend going down.
