2011 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

With the labor uncertainty, there are more unanswered questions entering the summer than usual. The good news is that gives us some more time to discuss the merits of players without having to react (or overreact) to the smallest bits of news about a slight injury in practice, or coach speak. We'll have plenty of time for that when it comes (we hope).

In the meantime, as always we will post a list of players to be discussed each week. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers

Player Page Link: Ben Roethlisberger Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or  ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Ben Roethlisberger is one of the top 5 QB's to play in the NFL today. He's shown that he can make the big plays under the most stressful of situations, something that the Tony Romo's and Phillip River's cannot claim although both of those guys would be drafted ahead of Big Ben in most fantasy circles.

I think Ben is an underrated fantasy QB as well, as he showed just 2 years ago he can pass for 4300 yards. He has a very strong arm, he can move in the pocket which creates time for big play receivers like Mike Wallace and Ben is the toughest QB in the league to take down. I can't think of any QB that can still make a great play when he looks like he's just about ready to hit the floor. I like Big Ben this year and I think he'll have a sollid season, finishing in the top 10 as a fantasy QB.

3900 yards passing, 26 td's and 13 INt's, 35 yards rushing and 2 Td's

Ben Roethlisberger must be overlooked because of his off the field issues. I can't come up with any other reason that he would be drafted as late as QB 10. Perhaps, it might also be influenced by his end of year numbers for the past two seasons, where he missed games.

His past two seasons stats look like this:

09 - 15 gms 337 of 506 66.6% 4,328 yds 8.6 ypa 26 TDs 12 ints 80 rush yds 2 TDs

10 - 12 gms 240 of 389 61.7% 3,200 yds 8.2 ypa 17 TDs 5 ints 176 rush yds 2 TDs

The lesser of these two seasons (2010) project to 267 yds and 1.42 TDs per game passing. This correlates to 4,272 yards and 23 TDs, not even including his rushing yards. I do not see the Steelers running the ball more going forward so his attempts should remain close to his previous two seasons and his younger receivers are continuing to improve. I like the look of drafting Ben around QB 10.

Ben Roethlisberger 16 gms 355 of 536 66.2% 4,395 yds 8.2 ypa 26 TDs 10 ints 160 rush yds 2 TDs

So we're just throwing out one of the greatest throws in SB history then? Not even the all-time greats can win every game.

Which throw was that?

He has still proven he can be clutch under pressure. Even great QB's like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have lost SB's, you can put Ben in that category. If he would have came back to beat Green Bay, Ben would have had a chance to truly be one of the great post season QB's in the history of the game, now he's with the Tom Brady and Peyton Manning's of the world.

Roethlisberger is a great NFL QB and a solid FF QB. Has good receivers and a sold running back in Mendenhall. Able to make plays out of the pocket. I would be happy with him as my starting QB, especially since I can get him in the 5th or 6th round, with is ADP at QB10.

3850 yards passing, 25TD, 13Int

150 yards rushing, 2TD

Ben looks like the guy to target this year. As the 10th QB off the board, he is the last guy with a great chance to hit 4000 yards. Must be a discount due to a short season last year. Going around the 60th pick, he is a steal in the late 5th when you consider guys who are likely to produce very similar numbers are going in the 2nd and 3rd. Over the last two years, Ben is averaging a little over a point less than Brees per game. Is that worth three rounds? Not to me.

530 att, 340 comp, 4200 yds, 28 TD, 14 INT

35 rush, 100 yds, 2 TD

I don't know why I drank the Big Ben Koolaide this year but I now currently believe he will finsih out of the top 10 probably in that 12-14 range. I believe Newton,Stafford, Kolb, Fitzpatrick and Bradford will all finish ahead of him. His easy schedule will mean less passing and more running IMO. In 7 seasons he has only eclipsed 30 TDs once and 4000 yards once. I'm sitting on him in a 6 pt per passing td league with Bradford as my backup and am starting with only average expectations week to week.

You could be right but the Steelers o-line needs to gel a bit before I see them as an efficient running team. Until that happens Big Ben is going to need to throw to keep drives alive. Also the Steelers have so many targets that I doubt that Arians & Roethlisberger will be able to resist throwing the ball.

They got destroyed week1 by BAL and Week2 PIT decided to go conservative when Ben got hurt. His easy schedule will pay off.

He is one of just 9 starting QBs that has thrown just 2 passing tds or less thru 2 games.
He had a HORRIBLE game 1 against Baltimore (as did virtually all of the Steelers), and they played a horrible Seattle team in week 2 who they shut out. The OC (Arians) loves to throw the ball, and whenever he is given the opportunity to do so, he has taken that opportunity, (even though sometimes he should just pound the rock).Roethlisberger should have (barring injury) around 4000 yards, with around 25 TDs, and he should chip in 1-3 rushing TDs, as well. Two average games (week 1 was below average, if you deduct points for INTs) doesn't change that projection. Unless you have a Rodgers or Brady, you shouldn't expect multiple TDs every game.

Bradford ahead of him, really?

Anyway, what others have said--week 1 was a bomb, and in week 2, he was flawless. He'll be fine and have some monster games. I think a lot of the monster passers from the first two weeks will come back to earth soon--I doubt we'll have 15 guys hitting 4000 yards, after all.

Did I just sell Big Ben too cheap in a dynasty?

I gave: Big Ben

I got: Helu and a 2nd in 2012

I have Vick and Newton at QB so was trying to move him for a RB.
