Bengals O-line down 2 starters (1 Viewer)

SYMPHONY X

Bengals homers..time to chime in. ESPN is reporting that the starting center Kyle Cook could miss the season, and I believe that guard Travelle Wharton is already lost for the season. What is the current state of the O-line? Is there some depth there to replace these guys? With Dalton possibly seeing more pressure up the middle, does A.J. Green need to be downgraded? How about BJGE? He seems to me like more of an up the middle type RB, so he would have to be downgraded, I assume. Thoughts anyone?

At guard, they had Boling who isn't terrible to replace Wharton. Cook is a very solid Center and I don't know what to expect out of his replacement (Faine?). It's definitely a problem. How big of a problem depends how these replacements play and I don't think you're going to know that answer in time to help you with fantasy.

One problem for fantasy might be BJGE targets out of the backfield. The Bengals have repeatedly found excuses to keep RB's in to block and this seems to be a pretty legit reason. I'm not convinced it affects AJ Green or Dalton.

Yes, its a huge blow. Cook is very underrated and impossible to replace. Will really hurt the Bengals offense.
That's what I am thinking. Does Dalton have the ability to scramble and make some downfield plays, ala Big Ben? If he does, then Green may not take too big of a hit. With the Bengals extremely soft schedule in the first 6-weeks (outside of @BAL in week 1) there shouldn't be a whole lot of pressure on the offense to perform. The Bengals D should be able to contain the 4 rookie QB's they face (Weeden twice), and Gabbert. So maybe it's gonna be a sell high after week 6 scenario, depending on how the O-line looks by then. What say ye?

I'm not a Bengal homer but I think you are right to wonder how much those injuries will effect Nati skill players.I had questions about QB Andy Dalton lingering from last year.He looked decent enough up until the final five games. Here are the passing numbers he posted in the last five games he has started:13 @Pit 13514 Hou 18915 @StL 17916 Ari 15417 Bal 232Only one game over 200 passing yards with an average of 178 passing yards per game.It seems that defenses might have gotten some sort of book on the rookie as the year went on, now with the injuries to his offensive line, well I just am not sure what to expect from him this year.

Wow..those yardage totals are quite alarming. Yes, he was a rookie, so maybe this was expected, especially against top D's like Pit, Hou, and Bal. I own Green in one of my main leagues, so I will definitely be keeping a close eye on Dalton early on this season. If those low yardage totals continue to trend, A.J. Green's ceiling is going to be quite low. Thanks for the good feedback.

The tough thing about the Bengals and their schedule last year (and to some degree this year) is that when they get ahead they take the air out of the ball. That means you're hoping for big games against good teams, but the good teams they played were Pitts, Balt, Hou, SF ... the best defenses in football. It can be hard to figure out what is a good matchup unless the philosophy changes some.

And it will only get worse, as defenses come up with more exotic blitzes, and have a full year to study him.Coming off a lockout, everything was pretty vanilla. i think it gets ugly in cincy this year....As for trading AJGreen high, with Joe Haden out the first few weeks, that's when I would target dealing him. They play cleveland week 2.

I'm a bit worried about a possible sophomore slump for Green and this news isn't making me feel any better about it. Forgive me for the obvious metaphor here but I'm wondering if Dalton turns into a pumpkin this year.

week 15 Green separated his shoulder so that likely has some to do with the depressed numbers as he could barely lift his arm and he was the passing offense.

Wharton for Boling is basically a wash. Boling is underrated. Losing Cook hurts. Depending on who replaces him, the line goes from something like 13th ranked to something like 18th ranked. small downgrade. I will try to get an updated chart published to illustrate all the losses in preseason.

From Early this month...

Cincinnati

OL: They are getting a lot of love in most publications. I wanted to really like this groupand they do have some upside but I don't believe this is a top 5 OL right now.

Tackles: From a pass protection standpoint this is one of the best tandems in theleague. Partly because Dalton has a quick release but the fact is they only allowed30 QB hurries combined and 6 sacks. Dalton enjoyed plenty of time in the pocket as a rookie which allowed for big plays down the field to AJ Green. Andrew Whitworthis excellent is pass protection, is a top10 at his position but has never received a ProBowl invite...his downside is run blocking which is well below avg. And Cinci likes to runbehind him to the left side with about 1 out of every 4 carries going his way. The otherside is anchored by Andre Smith the former 1st round pick who looked pretty shakywhen he first entered the league but has settled into a solid producer even if he neverlives up to his draft slot. He is a better run blocker than Whitworth and also very solid inpass protection, only yielding 3 sacks last season.

Guard/Center: 2 out of 3 are new to the team including rookie pick Kevin Zeitler out of Wisconsin and Travelle Wharton who was brought over from Carolina and gradedout middle of the road before signing with Cinci. Ryan Cook is the Center, pretty solidbut nothing special. This unit is going to be tested to find yards in the running game. Idon't believe the Bengals are going to be able to run the ball with a lot of success rightnow. In fact I think when you look at the OL and the strengths and weaknesses, youare going to conclude it best to load up in the passing game but maybe look elsewherefor running help.

Bench: Anthony Collins(Solid), Clint Boling, and Dennis Roland will all be working offthe bench. There is some depth here and I would not be surprised if more than onesees some significant time inside if things don't pan out exactly as planned.

Bottom Line: The pass protection is there, the run blocking I'm not so sure on, in fact I would rate it below avg.

RB: D

PB: A-
