Benson arrested in Texas (1 Viewer)

Cedric Benson arrested

Police use pepper spray during arrest

By Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporter

8:14 AM CDT, May 4, 2008

Bears running back Cedric Benson was arrested late Saturday night near Austin, Texas, and charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest, both Class B misdemeanors.

According to a sergeant from the Travis County Sheriff's office, Benson, who played at the University of Texas in Austin, was arrested by the Lower Colorado River Authority. A LCRA spokesperson said that Benson, who failed a sobriety "float test" (an abbreviated version of a field sobriety test) on the boat, argued over taking a follow-up test on land and refused to put on a life jacket. LCRA police attempted to arrest Benson at that time but he refused to cooperate and was pepper sprayed. He was booked at 11:24 p.m. Saturday and later bonded out, the sergeant said.

Benson, who had his 2007 season cut short by a broken leg, was in jeopardy of losing his starting spot even before the arrest. The fourth-overall pick of the 2005 draft has struggled through his first three seasons with the Bears, failing to post a 1,000-yard campaign while averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. Benson averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry last season, finishing with 674 yards on 196 carries with four touchdowns in 11 games started. He missed the final five games with the leg injury.

The Bears sent a clear sign that they wanted more production from their running back by selecting Tulane's Matt Forte in the second round of this year's draft. Forte's ability to get to the outside and catch the ball out of the backfield were dimensions the Bears missed with Benson in the lineup, although Benson showed flashes against Seattle and Denver last season.

Resisting arrest, huh? Did he really think he could "run" from the cops?

Insert your favorite "he probably got 2 yds and fell after running up the back of a bystander" joke....

This is my county - I know all the lawyers here because my wife is a prosecutor - he already had pled no contest to criminal trespassing and got a 8 day sentence here in 2003, and had a PoM that got dropped in 2002. I'll also probably know a thing or two about the judges in the case. Stay tuned.

Just had a trade involving him. Thought, why not, he might put it together at some point. :kicksrock:

I'm still hoping/thinking that Forte is the next JJ Arrington/B.Jackson

I heard he blamed his friends for not blocking the cops better.
Actually what I heard was his friend was blocking just fine and had the cop almost pancaked, then Benson ran right up his backside and fell down.

You know there are a few laws that I won't really bat an eye about someone running afoul of, and boating while intoxicated is one of them.

But then resisting arrest to where you get pepper sprayed is just idiotic.

This might be the last straw for this guy. Friggin shame. I was as excited as anybody when the Bears drafted this guy. What a waste of talent

I know people who have been killed by drunk boaters. At least against a drunk driver, you can hope your car protects you. On the water, its you versus a boat and I don't know many swimsuits that will give that much protection.

Yes, the boat cops are pretty non-invasive. If he got arrested for that, he was definitely a menace to other people on the lake.

I broke my remote control throwing it down in disgust.I thought he had too many miles on him and I thought they already had the same talent in Anthony Thomas on the team. I ended up being wrong as Anthony Thomas was, and still is, the better RB

Because he didn't hurt anyone but himself, I'm safe to say...

Glad I have options with the #4 rookie pick this year.

What a maroon.

You're wrong. NFL players get DUI's all the time without any repurcussions on their careers at all.

Benson is still your starting RB.
X1. This is not just a DUI. It's resisting arrest also. Resisting to the point that he had to be pepper sprayed.

2. This isn't his first run-in with the law as he's been arrested twice before.

3. This is a convienent out for Angelo. The fanbase hates him, the locker room supposedly hates him. Angelo would be a fool to not take advantage of this situation and cut ties.

4. Minnimal cap hit if you release him. This team also spent nothing in the off season, so they have :BOATLOADS: of space under the cap and can take whatever the hit might be involved with releasing him

Excellent points, Limp Ditka. Remember the draft when everyone compared him to Ricky Williams? He was crying when he actually got selected in the top 5, and he said he was determined to get rid of the comparisons.Run, Ricky, run....er....run, Cedric, run!

From the way the story is being described in the media, I'm guessing the resisting arrest will be dismissed and he'll plead guilty to the DUI. This definately isnt the first case of an NFL player getting charged with DUI and resisting arrest. Now if the Bears are looking for a way seperate themselves from Benson, this does make it easier.

Thinking of taking Matt Forte with 3rd rookie pick over R. Mendenhall....

There is still obviously Fast Willie at Fort Pitt....but in Windy City....there is really nobody

else who could be full time back now.

Another nail in the coffin. Not the final one, but Benson is getting close. Benson only has a $820,000 base salary this year and everything else is performance bonuses, I don't see much reason to outright cut him yet.

Sell high on the 1.4.

You need a buyer in order to sell. And there's the problem.

I can't sell it after I traded for it pre-draft. Now, F.Jones, Forte, K.Smith, C.Johnson... why would you go any higher than 6?

Please be the new guy in my league w/ the 1.03!

Certianly a valid point.Seems like the 1.4 has moved a lot in the ACF though. I know I've seen the 1.4 moved in more than one of my leagues so far.

So, the moral of the story is don't draft J.Charles???

I'm considering Forte at 1.03 as well. The fact I'm a Bears fan, shades my view on him slightly though. For a guy that has already lost the confidence of mgmt, Benson isn't helping his case at all with this sort of behavior. Ultimately, things will be decided on the field, but Forte's immediate future is looking pretty bright currently.

Matt Forte is looking better every day.

I still don't get why everyone keeps talking this guy up. Granted Benson is terrible, but the Bears offensive line is not good, they have a poor QB, and lost their two starting WR's over the offseason. The offense is not going to provide a lot of TD opportunities for whoever the starting RB tis his year. Last year, everyone kept calling for Adrian Peterson to get the start over Benson and when he finally did after Benson's injury he didn't do much either. That is because the Bears offense is a fantasy wasteland. Forte may end up starting but people really need to temper their expectations for him this year.

This is true, but they did go OL in the first round so they are aware of that problem.
