What a bummer. He'd been having a lot of health problems the last few years. He was a fantastic guy, a brilliant artist and a top-notch storyteller.
I saw him at SDCC a couple years ago in artists alley. He'd shown up early and was just sitting around by himself, and had taken down the sign saying who he was, but I'm a comic nerd, so I knew who he was. I walked up and we talked for nearly an hour. Of course, we talked a bit about comics, but it turned into a regular conversation. It ended with him going through his artwork (He's an arguable Mount Rushmore comic artist) with me and helping me pick out a piece of his. A true gentleman, a comics illuminary and a great guy. RIP, Bernie.
