Best albums of 2017 - Playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

That's probably good for generating discussion for now. I'll post a few of these periodically in December.

I'll get the year end poll stuff happening soon too. It crossed my mind we could do a 2017 song draft before the album poll (so like next week or two) to shed some light on some stuff people might like to check out.

With Genrepalooza wrapping up I could run it but it might step on listening to those playlists or interfere more than it helps with year end stuff... thoughts?

I am behind for 2017, but I do like the idea of having a year end song draft before we do our album rankings to highlight stuff we missed or might have forgotten about from the start of the year.

Paste Magazine Top 50 of 2017

1. Jay Som

2. Kendrick Lamar

3. Father John Misty

4. Run the Jewels

5. Kurt Vile/Courtney Barnett

6. Sheer Mag

7. Alvvays

8. LCD Soundsystem

9. Mount Eerie

10. Sampha
really liked that Jay Som one too... pretty sure I mentioned it upthread. haven't really listened to it since I first found it.

I have to be in the right mood for the more chill-out sound, but sampha usually hits the right notes when I am.

Lo Tom, not Jay Som.

I've turned into my father, talking about Ricky Mandlebaum and the fine corinthian leather he peddles.

These songs sound more like Boys and Girls in America/Separation Sunday era than more recent stuff to me. Kooks in the kitchen and bricks through windows and blood on phones and parties and drugs. and heavy use of piano/keys. In other words, they're really ####### good.
Lead singer had a new album out too, no? Or maybe I just stumbled on one of his recently.

They missed Nicolay imo.

Album of the year (and I haven't even listened to it yet ;) )

The Smith Street Band - More Scared of You Than You Are Of Me is worth a listen for the punkier rock fans. I came across them through a Frightened Rabbit tweet but they're harder than them. It's produced by Jeff Rosenstock, so that's maybe a good touch point.  Australian PUP? I don't know, here are a couple songs.

Birthdays

25

Shine

So I'm about to jump into full-time Christmas music mode and want to make sure I didn't miss anything big this year. Does anyone want to share some of the albums that are going to make up your top 10ish or so albums? No need to rank them, I'm just looking for something to review.

At this point it's looking like my top twenty will be from the following (in order I added them to my cheat sheet... mostly)

[ ] Japandroids
[ ] Menzingers
[ ] Ron Gallo
[ ] Harley Poe (my AotY)
[ ] White Reaper
[ ] Clowns (I'm actually listening to this one right now)
[ ] Western Addiction
[ ] Meatbodies
[ ] B Boys
[ ] McCafferty
[ ] Royal Blood
[ ] The Districts
[ ] Casual Friday
[ ] Together Pangaea
[ ] Dopamines
[ ] The Bronx
[ ] PtM
[ ] Juiceboxxx (still can't believe I like this)
[ ] Beck
[ ] Direct Hit! / PEARS
[ ] First Blood
[ ] Czarface
[ ] Los Campesinos!
[ ] Cloud Nothings
[ ] Swordfish
[ ] QotSA

Here are a few other favorites from '17:

Wild Pink

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Broken Social Scene

The National

The Horrors

The War on Drugs

Big Thief

Destroyer

John Murry

Ted Leo

Sea Pinks

Nobody has Portugal the Man on there?
out of respect, I'm giving it another listen now.

that single- that I think is now getting played everywhere or on commercials- was one of those can't miss fantastic tunes for me this year until the overexposure.

eta: feel it still is the single... fantastic song (although really reminiscent of electric guest's this head I hold).

couple other ok tunes... but otherwise the rest sounds like the stuff they play in the background of spotify commercials and I'm skipping past them. not my scene.

It got a lot of play by me as a "family" album this year during road trips or cook outs.  It grew on me... and I really like Feel It Still.

Always love the EOY album poll!

Not sure if worthy of a new topic or not, but there always seems to be omissions of solid albums that I get around to listening to, sometimes years later, that become favorites.

A few albums that come to mind that I regret not having on the 2016 poll.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers: The Getaway. I'm not sure that even made it in the top 50 that year. I kind of just blew it off. IMO, easily the best of theirs since Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic. Not really groundbreaking, but a damn solid album and a shockingly great collection of songs after 4-5 mediocre releases. Easily should've been top 10 for me.

David Bowie: Blackstar: Might of been considered for the 2015 poll? Officially released Jan. 8, 2016 and he died a few days later. I kind of revisited a lot of his albums after he died and bought this on on vinyl. So great. Brilliant, heartbreaking, dark album. Embarrassed I never got around to listening to it sooner. Whatever year it was considered for, it should of been my #1.

I'm going to do this by the way. Getting into my slower time at work and I found myself in the politics forum a couple times today. Even if the draft ends up being me posting links to songs I love, that can't be worse than current world politics.

"Cut to the Feeling" is going to be on every year end song list (because it's fantastic), just like "I Really Like You" was two years ago and every one is still going to consider Carly Rae Jepsen a one hit wonder because they don't chart for #### :( .

spotify pointed me towards King Krule's 2017 release, The OOZ. it oozes cool. Dum Surfer is the track that pulled me in- not sure if this will make it onto my list or not as it's a bit maybe too "cool" and a bit chill-out for my usual listening, but I'll keep giving it listens.

Love that song.

Like you, not sure the album will make my top 20, but it’s good.

thanks.... lol... forgot how much my kids use my account. this was my "top" song of the year (6yo floppinha had it on repeat) with these guys as my top band.
oh yeah, my top songs playlist has 3 different versions of the Legos "Everything is Awesome" and two different versions of "Grand Ole Flag" mixed in with a bunch of random Jake Paul, 21 Pilots, and Kidz Bop songs.  Good times.

no chainsmokers? that one with the tattoo on the shoulder...yikes- non-stop for a while. so much so that even they got sick of it. or maybe it was a few songs- they genuinely all have the exact same structure and sound.

48,966 minutes.  Top Artists: The National, Car Seat Headrest, REM, U2, The Courtneys

Top Songs: Sunburned Shirts, Drunk Drivers, Times to Die, 1937 State Park (top 4 by CSH) and Silver Velvet (Courtneys)

Sounds about right.
