Best Documentaries You've Seen ----> (3 Viewers)

Just watched I Am Jane Doe on Netflix.

Talks about underage sex trafficking and the work that Backpage.com plays in the exploitation of children and the uphill battles that have been fought to try to stem child sex trafficking through Backpage.

The doc doesn't touch on the First Amendment issues that Backpage uses to defend itself, so need to take it with a grain of salt, but a horrible situation for some really poor kids.

I think the boyfriend would have killed someone regardless. He was as messed up as the rest of the bunch.
Yea. I'm glad she won't rot in jail for the rest of her life like he will.  She is going to get out with a lot of time left on her life clock.  I really sucks it came to what it did, but I think the event is going to be a net plus in her life.  Her mom would have likely killed her eventually.

I watched Marley last night on the NetFlix. I'm not a big reggae guy but of course I respected Bob Marley and it was great - a lot of stuff I had no idea about.

Anyone see HyperNormalization?

HyperNormalisation tells the extraordinary story of how we got to this strange time of great uncertainty and confusion - where those who are supposed to be in power are paralysed - and have no idea what to do. And, where events keep happening that seem inexplicable and out of control - from Donald Trump to Brexit, the War in Syria, the endless migrant crisis, and random bomb attacks. It explains not only why these chaotic events are happening - but also why we, and our politicians, cannot understand them. The film shows that what has happened is that all of us in the West - not just the politicians and the journalists and the experts, but we ourselves - have retreated into a simplified, and often completely fake version of the world. But because it is all around us, we accept it as normal. From BBCiPlayer
Another good doc from Adam Curtis

If it would have happened it would have completely leveled and killed everyone in Arkansas and spread radiation across about a tenth of the US.

As it was there was an insane explosion, it blew apart the silo, threw a 750 ton enclosing door, launching the missle’s second stage tank which then exploded. They found the warhead a 100 feet outside the structure.

There was a period of a few hours or so where the Air Force had no idea what was going to happen.

All from a dropped lug nut by a 21 year old kid.

Insane.

The doc also covered briefly a few other near misses. One was prevented from the final saftey feature which was essentially a light switch flipped in the off position.

Amazing one of these things hasn’t gone off.

Poverty Inc is as eye opening about how bad charity can be to 3rd world countries.  Could we sell food in the usa if everyone gave us free food.  Greed killing capitalism.  Must watch.  Free Amazon.

Command and Control

How have I never heard of this incident?

The dropping of an 8 lb socket almost caused an explosion in Arkansas 3 times more powerful than all the bombs dropped in WW II.
This was awesome.  We have lived in the Little Rock area since '96 and I have never heard a word of this.  Big fan of the Air Force as well, but this confirms my concerns about any gubmint entity and their lies and cover-ups in the name of national security.  The Air Force's treatment of those heroes is shameful.

Crazy. Thought maybe I wasn't familiar because I was young and as pointed out by Floppo full blown disaster was avoided.

Sounds interesting. I remember hearing about some celebrity (Brad Pitt maybe?) who helped dig a well for a poor village in Africa, then was horrified to learn they were all murdered by a neighboring village who then took control of the well. Unintended consequences can really suck.

I haven't read the thread so it may have been mentioned, but the 'Endless Summer' is very good.  And I don't even surf and it was made before I was born.  Definitely worth a watch.

No it is simple.  This church from Atlanta decided to give eggs to this place in Africa.  Well, everyone got eggs, and the local guy was out of business.

Local church gave eggs some where  else the next year.

So they killed eggs  locally.

Currently in the middle of Wild, Wild Country.  It's a 6 part documentary.

When the world's most controversial guru builds a utopian city deep in the Oregon desert, conflict with the locals escalates into a national scandal. A true story.

Not the best (or most accurate) but very interesting if you're into new wave/80s music.

In August, 1982, a small group of radio visionaries at WLIR Long Island knew they couldn't compete with the mega radio stations in New York City. With one brave decision, they changed the sound of radio forever. Program Director Denis McNamara, the crew at the station and the biggest artists of the era tell the story of how they battled the FCC, the record labels, mega-radio and all the conventional rules to create a musical movement that brought the New Wave to America - including bands like U2, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode and Blondie.

The China Hustle. 300+ small Chinese company's doing a reverse merger and getting themselves
listed on the American exchanges. The catch? Some cook the books (report 10 times the income)
and steal the money. We are talking about $1 to $10 stocks that go up 100 to 300%.

If you are a investor this is a MUST watch. One more thing. In China it's not illegal for you to steal
the foreign investor's money.

Really enjoyed this one.  Amazing what WLIR almost single handedly did for the introduction of the genre in the US.
Heh...that’s why I said “not the most accurate”.  KROQ In LA was doing the same thing at the same time.  In some ways KROQ was slightly ahead of WLIR.

My wife is out of town this weekend so I've watched 2 documentaries that were mentioned here and enjoyed both of them:

  • Poverty, Inc.   (especially liked this one, really makes you rethink what/how you give to charity)
  • Command and Control   (I was already familiar with this story, so didn't get as much out of it, but still enjoyed it)
Thanks for the recommendations!

Agreed.  I was east coast growing up though.  For me, KTCL back in the day in Denver was awesome, but not a pioneer.

Three Identical Strangers

Really good doc.  Still in theatres though.  Older fellas might remember some of the story from the news or Donahue.

Life Itself

Excellent documentary about Roger Ebert’s life. Really powerful documentary and I really enjoyed it. 4.5/5

Scorcese's Dylan documentary is as good as any. No Direction Home.

Just watched Ken Burns doc on Mayo Clinic and that is outstanding.

I'm a sucker for surfing docs...Momentum Generation was a compelling watch. Felt like Dogtown and Z Boys
Damn, I need to check that out.

Dogtown and Z Boys is amazing.  Peralta did an awesome job (if you exclude the hilarious scenes when he provides answers to his own questions).

Didn't see this one listed in here:

Abducted in Plain Sight

Disturbing.  If it were a movie, you would call BS on some of the things that happen.

I just watched carts of darkness on YouTube the documentary follows a group of homeless men who have combined bottle picking with the extreme sport of racing shopping carts. I enjoyed it, definitely recommend.

Mommy Dead and Dearest

This is the story of the death of Dee Dee Blanchard by Gypsy Rose Blanchard and boyfriend. What a crazy story. 4/5

Bump.  Looking for some new recommendations.

Watched American Factory last night - In post-industrial Ohio, a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the husk of an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand blue-collar Americans. Early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.  4/5

We talked about this a little in the Netflix thread. Well made in terms of presenting the info without much bias...and it would've been easy to sway it one way or the other. Still thinking about this one a bit. Also interesting in that it's the Obama's first release out of their production company (note that they didn't create this movie- so don't worry if you have political blinders on perpetually- they only released it)

Battered Bastards of Baseball mentioned yet? Story of Kurt Russell's dad's independent baseball team. Very fun watch. Bing Russell was a B'ish actor who loved baseball and after his acting days, put together the only independent team in the country and played against the affiliated clubs.
