Wasnt there a dedicated thread a while back to Making a Murderer? Cant seem to find it.

Anyway, just wow on convicting the kid based on literally nothing but an obvious coerced "confession".  So you tell me they chained and tortured someone in a bed, cut her throat and shot her, and not one shred of evidence found in the room?  That isnt even possible.

I know someone who writes letters to Brendan in prison.  (I know, I know....she's super religious and feels awful for him). She'll post bits and pieces of the letters on her Facebook page from time to time and he writes like a 6 year old. That "confession" is laughable.....but has been upheld to the highest degrees of our justice system so far.

Well I have only seen episode 1 of the 2nd season, so guessing things haven't gone well for Brendan if he is still in jail.  I am sure I could just look it all up, but enjoying the documentary so far.  If i read spoilers, oh well, no biggie.

I tell ya what though, this lawyer that picked up the case and has all those exonerations.....wow, she is one tenacious B.  I like her so far.

Staircase.  Wow is that Peterson guy unlikable.  And wow was that blood spatter guy a dunce.  That whole thing was a mess.  I fully believe he killed her, but wow they botched that crime scene and the prosecution.  Didnt matter though.

Probably contravertial but jurys are stupid.   Hard to believe that's the best we got.

Oh.  Three episodes into Making a Murderer.  Jesus wow.

After seeing these last few documentaries ya wonder how many of these types of things are going on as we speak.  Good grief.
over the last 2 weeks i was live streaming a local murder trial

granted it was during work hours so i didn't hear every word but essentially the prosecution's case was "wife is dead.. must be the husband." they kept hammering away that he didn't seem emotional enough about his wife having gone missing.

defense brought the wife's psych doctor up to talk about her lifetime of battling depression and multiple suicide attempts including one in the year before she disappeared.

prosecutors best "evidence" was the guy drove trucks and could have dumped her body in a pit.

that was it. oh, and he started dating a woman 6 months after his wife disappeared.

he just got convicted with no body, no physical evidence, no witnesses, no contradictions in his story.. nothing.

juries are a freaking crapshoot

I didn't think that you could be convicted of murder without a body.

So that's just TV mob stuff I guess ...

"Although murder charges without a corpse are rare, nationally, about 86 percent of no-body murder cases that go to trial result in convictions, compared to all murder cases with conviction rates of 70 percent.Jul 9, 2020"

Plug for Icarus on Netflix.  About a guy who wanted to do a doc about doping and ended up in the middle of the whole Russian Olympics doping event.  Way cool.

Oh dear god.  His conviction was overturned, now I see that was appealed.  Obviously that outcome didnt go in his favor.

What a gut punch

She's awesome.  The 2nd season is virtually her work on the appeals.  And watching Avery's parents get older and going through it all is pretty sad.  What a depressing, dead end part of the country that is.

Just watched The Last Blockbuster on Netflix. It was entertaining. Equal parts of nostalgia of renting from Blockbuster back in the day and the screwing the pooch of corporate Blockbuster failing to adapt.

Have y'all discussed the Formula 1 Netflix series?

Season 3 tomorrow

I know nothing about any kind of auto racing, but I'm tearing through these episodes.

It was done in a very non-sensational kind of way, probably because there's so much money/drama/tension they didn't need to.

I'm now planning to DVR the Bahrain Grand Prix next week, the season opener.

I just got a free year of AppleTV+ due to a recent device purchase.

Beastie Boys Story - I was really looking forward to this one because I was a huge Beastie Boys fan in HS.  If you like the Beastie Boys, definitely check it out, but if they're not your thing, it's an easy pass

Boys State - I thought this one was really good.  Highly recommended.

How do I view this list?  :bag:
Sort by Top or Best.  TBH, I don't understand the difference between those two sort options LOL, but either should suffice.

Edited to add - Google explained it for me.  Top is the most amount of upvotes. Best is most amount of upvotes with fewest downvotes.

appears to have been purged.  i can't find it either.
This one?

The Jeffrey Dahmer Files

I was going to high school in the Milwaukee area when all of this went down. This documentary is like a companion film to the onslaught of news stories about him back in the day. it’s a mix of interviews with police and others associated with Dahmer as well as vignettes of some of the events that transpired by Dahmer himself (mostly mundane stuff, but relevant to the murders). 3.5/5

Here's a recent What is the most insane documentary you've ever seen thread from AskReddit.  I've seen a majority of the ones with the most upvotes, but I've added a few more to my watch list.

I watched Grizzly Man last night and it was pretty fascinating.  I'm shocked the dude survived that long to be honest.
this guy became tiresome almost immediately.

I didn't want to watch his mauling but he seemed to welcome it - I didn't want him to die a gruesome death ...just go away.

The Act of Killing

Talk about a messed up documentary. This film looks at the slaughter of thousands of communists in Indonesia by paramilitary groups from 1965 to 1966. It follows some of the perpetrators of these heinous crimes in making a movie to celebrate their victory over the communists. It’s crazy and sadly true.

3.5/5

The Truffle Hunters

Documentary about truffle hunters in Piedmont, Italy looking for white Alba truffles. I really enjoyed this documentary and recommend it to any dog lover or anyone who has an appreciation of truffles and/or the art of finding truffles. 4/5

Woodstock 99 on HBO Max is pretty solid.  I remember watching all the highlights on MTV that week.  Things turned to pure chaos pretty quick.  The doc was pretty well put together.  Worth a watch for sure.

I was most sad for his gf.

He was insane.

For obvious reasons I’ve felt compelled to rewatch The Vietnam War over the past few days and it’s just made me incredibly sad.

Malice in the Palace

Very interesting hour going through this.  Still not sure whether to love Ron Artest or hate him.

Just watched The Last Blockbuster on Netflix. It was entertaining. Equal parts of nostalgia of renting from Blockbuster back in the day and the screwing the pooch of corporate Blockbuster failing to adapt.

I live 15 minutes from that store.  It's pretty amusing how many people make pilgrimages to see it.  A buddy of mine at church was wearing one of their sweatshirts this morning.

Untold: Crime and Penalties

Unbelievable documentary that proves once again that truth is stranger than fiction. 3.5/5

The Ken Burns documentary about Ali recently shown on PBS was outstanding. I think it is available for streaming on the PBS website.

this is going to be an hour long episode of some new crime show...... the name of which i cannot recall right now.

The Lost Leonardo

Great documentary showing the monetization of fine art and the shady business dealings surrounding it. 4/5

The Rescue

Intense, dramatic story of the Thai cave rescue. Reminiscent of Baby Jessica in Texas years ago. The 12 boys trapped with their coach had the perfect adult for that situation - a man who grew up an orphan, later became a Buddhist monk. The scale of this operation is staggering. In the end it came down to a handful of hobbyist (cave divers) who had remarkably similar personality traits.

NatGeo or Disney

My #1 documentary for 2021, 10/10 on the sphincter scale.

The Alpinist

Speaking of 10/10, this one really captures the purist approach of Marc-Andre Leclerc. For a guy who has set so many records he climbs in relative obscurity. Absolutely zero interest in fame or recognition. Alex Honnold says he is the most inspirational climber of his generation.

Shows up onsite - having never seen the mountain - with no preplanned route, and climbs some of steepest and most difficult faces on the planet. Using nothing but ice picks and toe holds. The soloing footage is mind-bending - and there was so much!

His gf Brette Harrington is an accomplished climber as well and easy on the eyes. The perfect soul mate for him. She has a ton of records as well but for them it’s more about the lifestyle, the spiritual connection with the mountain, climbing for the sake of climbing.

Stunning visuals unlike anything you have ever seen.

Agree, this was fantastic!

Also recommend 14 Peaks.  Another incredible climbing movie.

Iirc, bobby posted about 14 Peaks...I watched it based on that. Really did nothing for me. Not really about climbing, more about achieving this record- which is incredible, but felt underwhelming to me based on how the movie was presented. Next we'll do this and that peak. Ok, we made it to the top....yay. Next peak...ok, done.

Alpinist, otoh, pulled me in because of the climbing footage which showed how insane what he was doing actually was. Both guys are amazing, all their accomplishments are amazing. But one movie did a much better job than the other painting the picture of why.

Thank you!! Was just asking my gf what’s the other great doc we saw last year but we couldn’t remember. Just a phenomenal achievement - and really cool to get to know a Nepalese climber. We always hear about sherpa's yet in the west we never learn anything personal about them.

Nimsdai Purja is a total badass. The brigade of gurkhas are the fiercest fighters in the world. To be the first Gurkha to join the British special forces - that’s elite order of magnitude stuff. Oh, and then throw in “hey let’s see if we can pull off the greatest mountaineering feat in world history.”

Never heard of Nima? Well, good chance you’re familiar with one thing. Took the most iconic photo of Mount Everest himself. Went viral, then it was on the front page of the NYT.

His positivity is infectious. This doc just blows you away. It’s incredibly inspirational seeing people Nims. Cannot recommend this enough.
