Best Fantasy Podcasts 2013... (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Some new, couple older...best podcasts this last year:

1. "NFL Around the League": NFL ATL...

NFL ATL writers Dan Hanzus, Marc Sessler, Chris Wesseling, Gregg Rosenthal, Mike Patra have about 3 podcasts/week doing game previews, reviews and other various NFL topics. Tons of chemistry with these guys, very funny but always professional and on point and with stats you don't hear anywhere else. Great football talk and great entertainment. Bonus: NFL ATL has a matching Twitter feed that captures some stuff from the podcasts and has links to great articles.

2. "The Audible, On the Couch" with Sigmund Bloom.

Resident Footballguy spins out a weekly 'philosophical' view of Fantasy Football with interviews with great minds from around the Fantasy world to unravel current stories and thoughts on the NFL, with a Fantasy twist. You get to know some really great writers in the Fantasy world and get inside their heads...all delivered like a good glass of scotch in front of a roaring fireplace (assuming you like scotch).

3. FantasyGuru.com weekly game Preview with Greg Cosell (on BlogTalk Radio)

John Hansen of FantasyGuru.com touches on each of the weekly games with guest Greg Cosell, NFL Film guru, delivering nuggets about players and matchups you won't hear anywhere else.

4. oldie, but goodie...KFAN Fantasy Football Weekly (best in season WDIS podcast)

Bo Mitchell has left the lineup, but has been replaced with a pretty good analyst (Matt).

KFAN's Fantasy Football Weekly with Paul Charchian, John Tuvey, and Christian Peterson is the premier Matchups/Who Do I Start podcast for Fantasy Football. Ever since these guys were at Fanball they've provided non-conventional but winning strategies for Fantasy Football. They've since each moved on to other Fantasy Football ventures, but the cohesiveness of the team is still evident when they come together for this weekly radio show after all these years. They come together weekly on KFAN radio (out of Minnesota) to give out matchup analysis and clear start/sit advice each week. You'll hear about players two weeks before they break out and know when it's risky to start 'obvious' players. They put in the work, you set your lineup.
Always ahead of the curve on trends, well researched, polished, and just irreverent enough to keep it fun.

5. ESPN Fantasy Underground...(edited to add) I like this podcast a lot. Christopher Harris and Field Yates watch the games and are very perceptive, ahead of trends, and not afraid to buck popular opinion. It borders on a 'On the Couch' type, free-form format, rather than traditional game review/preview, but it's excellent commentary.

probably my favorite one.. love listening to them.

what do they do in the off-season? still have a weekly show leading up to the draft or what?

I actually like both ESPN podcasts.

Fantasy Underground give good second level analysis.

The Fantasy Focus pod is a bit more "jokey" (by their own admission), but I think Matthew Berry and Nate Ravitz have good chemistry. Anytime Ravitz is not in and Berry has to host, it's not very good as he tends to wander aimlessly, but when the two primary guys are there, it makes my chuckle more often than not, even if the level of analysis is more obvious, by the numbers, kind of stuff.

Offseason is when they put out their best stuff. Tons of draft/dynasty stuff. Love the audible!

Agree. I've been listening to Fantasy Focus for a couple years, just discovered the Underground this year.

Berry is entertaining, but I actually think Ravitz is the unsung hero. He has a good ability to cut through the BS (whether from Berry or just in general) and get to the important points. I also find Stephania Bell's injury reports super helpful -- I understand a ton more about sports injuries than I did before I started listening to her.

Haven't heard of any of the podcasts mentioned in the OP; will definitely check them out.

I'm not totally familiar with all the podcasts listed, but if Cosell is the only guy grinding coaches film he really should be considered on a whole different level. Realistically he's the only guy watching the games from angles to tell what is actually happening. Who else is doing that for the whole league and talking about it weekly like him?

On the Couch is solid. Bloom does an excellent job MC'ing some big egos and runaway mouths.

Like Underground way more than Focus. Less yapping about their team and obvious "Starting Peyton over Dalton/Eli/Rivers" this week discussions

Also like the IDP Roundtable. I don't play any IDP leagues, but Norton & Bramel are engaging and offer some good insight for DST rankings. Just wish they would add on an extra 5 minutes to cover DSTs in addition to the IDPs.

I know I'll get some flak for this one, but I like the CBS Fantasy Football Today show too. Nothing here for the non "Jokey" listeners, but a pretty good mix of Fantasy info and banter.

On the Couch

Under the Helmet with Chad Parsons and Doug Veatch

DLF Dynasty

Going to be focusing on these for the offseason for draft talk and rookie scouting:

Draftcountdown with Shane P Hallam and Scott Wright

Whatever the ESPN draft one is I forget the exact name

Shutdown Corner with Cossell and Doug Farrar

I have also listed to DLF Dynasty podcast, mostly in the offseason.

I used to listen to the ESPN Fantasy Focus, but there's alot of schtick there. Still some good stats, perspective, and content, but have to wade through alot of stuff to get there. Ditto CBS Sports podcast.

Shutdown Corner podcast got shutdown when Doug moved away from Yahoo. That was very similar to what the Fantasy Guru does/did, and I listed to it every week. For about two weeks this season (2013), Doug restarted the Shutdown Corner pod under his new job at SI (I think), but it was shutdown after two episodes. Never saw the reason why.

ESPN Fantasy Underground...totally forgot to mention that one. I like this one alot, and am going to add it to the original post. Christopher Harris and Field Yates watch the games and are very perceptive, ahead of trends, and not afraid to buck popular opinion.

This is back up and current and being hosted by Jay Busbee, Kevin Kaduk and Frank Schwab. Their latest one was yesterday. I've only listened to the 3 January show, but it sounds more like they're looking to do something more in depth than a WDIS show.

One of these guys (Busbee?) has got a serious whiny inflection in his voice. Borderline unlistentoable.

First Draft with Kiper and McShay. My favorite podcast, although Sig's On the Couch and the IDP roundtables are right there as well.

Never understood why they don't do it during the season.

Wish the Draft Scout guys (CBS) would do podcasts.

NFL Draft Countdown is probably the best, but need to mix it up with the guests more.

Fantasy Focus is a fun listen. Berry and Ravitz have great chemistry and I listen just to hear their back and forth with a little football-related information thrown in. Bell doesn't add anything to the show in my opinion, she's always taking the conservative side of any injury news (He's got a broken leg so he will probably miss this week, etc.). Basically everything she provides is already in a dated Rotoworld blurb.

The Pod Vader hate is funny now and then too.

NFL ATL is not a fantasy podcast, but it is a very entertaining listen.

The FBG podcasts and Fantasy Underground are easily the best IMO. The match up podcast with Cossell is good, but the same guys do a review podcast without Cossell that is pretty useless IMO.

The DLF stuff is good for dynasty content.

There's a lot of other ones out there, but mostly pretty crappy. Half the time the guys are more concerned with cracking jokes, and everyone is a "RB/WR3 or flex" no matter what. Not a lot of good info/analysis.

Realistically he's the only guy watching the games from angles to tell what is actually happening. Who else is doing that for the whole league and talking about it weekly like him?
The only problem with Cossell is that he doesn't really know/care about fantasy football. This, of course, it's totally a "problem," it's just that his wealth of information isn't directly applied to fantasy predictions. The other guys who host the show do their best to interface with him with a fantasy angle, but they clearly don't watch as much film as Cossell.

Cossell will get into how a QB deals with the pass rush, or how he rolls out to his left, or doesn't set his feet, etc. Interesting NFL stuff, just not straight fantasy stuff is all.

FBGs and 2 Mugs are my favs-listened to on the Couch weekly (and others if i was driving a lot). Anything with Greg Cosell is obviously great as well.

Personally, I can't stand 2 Mugs. I don't really think they say much of substance, they're more interested in being hilarious, which they are not.

BFD Fantasy football show - OK. Not too much in the way of dumb jokes that only they get. Not the best from a production standpoint but very fantasy focused. 3/5

The Fantasy Football guys - Mostly same as above except less straight fantasy focused. 2.5/5

ESPN Football Today - Too much BS for me 2/5

ESPN Fantasy Focus - Same as above. Bell, as mentioned adds nothing for Bramel-esque info. The whole Podvader shtick is tiresome. Too much "My Fantasy team is doing this" talk. 2/5

ESPN Fantasy Underground - The best of the ESPN shows 4/5

NFL Around The League - As mentioned, not a real "Fantasy" show, ok from an entertainment standpoint 3/5

NFL Fantasy Live - Pretty good. Decent info, a little back and forth well produced 3.5/5

The Most Accurate Podcast - Paulson (future Couch guest?) is really good and they do a good job of going beyond the everyone that's not Calvin Johnson is a WR2/3/Flex depending on your scoring system/lineup/weather/his horoscope sign's alignment with the stars. Not a studio quality production but solid info. 4/5

CBSSports Fantasy Show - Not a lot different than the 2 unliked ESPN shows but for some reason I like these guys better than the ESPN ones. 3.5/5

Yahoo Fantasy Freaks - A two hour show with a ton of commercials and an MC that does way too much coffee 2/5

Fantasy Football Weekly (KFAN) - Pretty good info, and not much fluff. Two Hours. 2.5/5

FBGs The Audible - Lammy does a good job MCing a two hour show and keeps thing going really well. As much as I dislike listening to him rant and all his talk about how he perceives to have the inside scoop on the Broncos (every time I hear him talk about how he's going to ask "Foxy" this or that, I have to roll my eyes) we seem to get little real "scoop". Waldman's much easier to read than listen to (RSP :tebow: ). would like more fantasy take from Bramel too, not just the medical info. 3.5/5

FBGs The Couch - A Solid 4.5/5

FBGs Recap, Preview - 3.5/5

IDP Round Table - (Some DST please) 3/5

random side question about podcasts.

does anyone listen to behind the bets by chad millman on espn?

if so is it worth the listen from a gambling perspective or just junk?

listened to yesterday.. really good info

Fav podcasts

FBG: The Audible and On The Couch

DLF

ESPN: Fantasy Underground

ESPN: Fantasy Focus (not so much for the info, but it's entertaining to listen to)

I can't STAND the CBSSports Fantasy Football podcast. Dave Richards is SOOOOOO annoying! They try and be funny and have running jokes on the podcast but it's too forced for me. Stopped listening to it last season.

Fantasy Guru. He's only on the in-season weekly matchup episodes. The other in-season episodes (waiver show, recap show) are nothing special. In the preseason, I believe he also did some league preview episodes.

o okay.. thanks for the information.. something i'll have to remember to look out for next year

As a listener to The Audible, I started listening to On The Couch from the start.

First few episodes did little for me. Either I didn't get it or the show was finding its way or both... But it is not my favorite fantasy podcast.

Outside of FBGs shows, I do also enjoy some of the CBS shows. The RSS feed at least previews the content, so I know to avoid some ahead of time, which is nice.

From ESPN, I'll listen to the Berry trainwreck (Fantasy Focus) in a pinch, but definitely too much fluff. I know some people enjoy that stuff, but those people are wrong.

I'd much rather listen to the Fantasy Underground from ESPN.

One thing that bugs me is the folks on the Couch will often pimp a guest's show, but I'm nowhere near a pen or able to write, either running or driving. I never remember the other shows they recommend.

I won a free pizza tonight, and didn't even eat it.

I like podcasts.

Whatcha Got? I got a long road trip planned.

I like the Fantasy Football Index podcast. Sensible commentary. Assorted guests give a variety of ideas and analysis. Also prefer the ESPN Fantasy Underground for the same reasons previously listed.

I've pretty much given up on the Matthew Berry podcast. I don't care a whit about the personalities or their awards.

Fantasy Football Weekly is good, but no regular schedule. They did a couple Almost Daily podcasts in May and promised more, but then disappeared.

There a few I hear touted on The Audible, but I never take notes of what they are.

Fantasy Underground was decent, but may be done.

CBS was kinda unbearable. I mostly disliked the annoying laughy younger guy Adam with the stuffed up nose who promised to leave the show and then came back.

Anything else? Anything new and good?

I can't believe shark poolers think ESPN's Fantasy Underground podcast is even decent. It's a trainwreck.

Honestly the best (and only one I have time to listen to anymore) is On The Couch or The Audible.

I can't listen to The Audible at all anymore, really has gone downhill the past 2 or 3 years, seems the guys are more interested in cracking jokes than providing relevant fantasy information. However I do enjoy listening to Sigmund's On The Couch podcast.

I listen to the audible, on the couch, DLF and have listened to a few of the X's and Y's podcast but that one seems to be geared towards redraft.

On the Couch is by far my favorite podcast. Yeah, the audible isn't what it used to be.

The sad fact is.................all the "once great" podcasts are starting to lower the information content and the quality is just lacking for the "serious players" like many here.

The trend has been in the last few years, to make most a bit more "lighthearted" with some humor, in an effort to appeal to more mainstream audiences.

Obviously this doesn't necessarily appeal to many of us who are just looking for the "hardcore information and debate".

In many ways, its a good thing since it contributes to overall growth, leading to more podcasts. Many are now year 'round, which I am a big proponent of. Lets be fair, now I can get my fantasy fix every week, not just during the season. :)

But many of my former favorites are now bordering on being "UN-listenable" and they just aren't that enjoyable anymore.

Fantasy Focus - Used to be a favorite, but its more and more humor, company promotion and less and less actual interesting content.

(Now that Nate Ravitz has gone, there isn't much to make me listen to it anymore, but I still do)

The Audible - Agree with many here, used to be better, but in my opinion its still a lot of information and some decent discussion.

Pyro - I believe this one to be underrated honestly. I have had some interaction with a couple of the guys, and they do an absolute heap of work to keep it fresh and going every week. Not to mention how can you complain about new content virtually every week year round, and its often in the 2-3 hour range.

If there ever was a fantasy site/podcast on the up rise and getting bigger and better, it may well be these guys.

The Fantasy Footballers- I only discovered this one a few months back, and its been good. Its not been necessarily my favorite, but it has become an "old reliable" and pretty good for 2 days a week.

There is talk of more episodes as the season nears.

Pyro, can't seem to find it
Google "Pyro fantasy football" and its the first hit.

Its also on iTunes which is where I normally get it.

Be aware its some guys sitting around "letting loose" and they often have a few cold adult beverages too.

You can't beat the fact that they offer so much content though, sign me up for anything decent thats 2-3 hours every week. :)

I am pretty sure they are on Stitcher, and several other similar ways to listen.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions TZM.

Gecko - I use podcast addict on Android and have never had a problem finding any podcast.

Never come across any that are as good as On The Couch or The Audible, imo, but I'm giving Pyro a little listen just now and it seems pretty good. Seems pretty free form and dense, obviously a decent length as well and I like how the off season podcasts are specific subjects eg In Season Management, Drafting etc etc

If you aren't listening to "Move the Sticks" with Daniel Jeremiah you are missing out. I love The Audible and On the Couch but Move this Sticks is is probably my favorite for just pure football (no fantasy slant).

Listening to my first Pyro podcast right now, so far, I like these guys. Podcasts seem to run long, this one and the newest one are both 2+ hours. Will definitely add them to my list.

If you have Android, I'd recommend using Pocketcasts. I found them there and they also have their podcasts on their site as well
