Best of the Rest... (1 Viewer)

With this week's signings of Charles Woodson and Lavar Arrington, the last of the marquee NFL free agents are off the market. With the draft in full effect, many of the remaining veterans fates will be decided by how the draft unfolds. With that in mind, I thought I would list the "best of the rest" in NFL free agency at all the positions...

For reference, this data is coming from our NFL Free Agency Tracker.

Harrington isn't actually a Free Agent, but nice list anyway. Thanks!Edited to add: (KFFL) The St. Louis Rams have re-signed restricted free agent WR Kevin Curtis (Rams) to an undisclosed contract.

Guys like Joey Harrington that are given permission by their teams to negotiate trades are in the database, but you're right that, technically, he's not a FA.

Jason, thanks for throwing this together. I think the next question for each will be "where does each land?"

Jason

I think the RFA signing period ended last Friday. Teams get seven days to decide to match - rosters are known for sure the day before the draft one way or another.

Yep...but the guys on this list still haven't signed their tenders. It's really a formality, but they'll be adjusted when they put their John Hancock on the contract.

I heard Tony Banks was just about to sign a contract, but he fumbled the pen. ;) Nice list Jason.

BTW - Harrington is in a never-never land of sorts. That's also why he's not on the FBG Depth Charts, IIRC from talking with Bob Henry.

:bag: :wall: Never question Woodrow. Newbie back to his corner.

It's never too early to research the FA's that will still be available when Madden 07 ships. Millions of Madden dynasties depend on this sort of info.

Thanks for the catch on Maddox.

Looking through this list, it's pretty slim pickings at most positions. Certainly Jeff Mitchell can help a team at center, and Ty Law (for the right price) has value. I'm not sure what's up with Ahmed Plummer, is he really hurt or something?

Buckner is supposedly going to the Giants

Tutan Reyes has had interest from a number of teams (as a backup)

From a fantasy perspective, Kerry Collins could still land in Baltimore but that depends on Steve McNair. Otherwise I would think he'll sign with a contender as a backup.

Jon Wells is capable of decent fantasy production on the right team, I could see plenty of teams taking a look at him after the draft if they don't feel their RB depth was adequately addressed on Saturday and Sunday.

thanks again, Jason. I could see Philly drafting a 2nd day RB, and picking up Wells to complement Westbrook. Philly and Pitt, if they do not draft an early RB, seem logical destinations for Wells.

What's the story on Boulware's health? Gonna go looking for some stories and check player pages, but anyone with knowledge like to share? I seem to remember him about to sign with someone, and failing a physical? Could be way off on that. Anyway, Colts have a propensity for signing veteran leaders on the cheap late in FA, might be a possible destination if he comes cheap.

*off to look around*

:goodposting: Wells would fit nicely in Philly. I could definitely see that.

Is Buckhalter going to attempt another comeback or did he hang it up?I forget

April 9, 2006

The memory seems so distant: 2001 NFC Championship Game, rookie season. Correll Buckhalter was the go-to player for an upstart Eagles offense that was going toe-to-toe with the mighty Rams in St. Louis.

Buckhalter had six carries that day in the first half and gained 50 yards and his slashing, powerful style had the Rams on their heels. He was slicing and dicing and the Eagles held a lead at halftime.

It was Buckhalter at his best and there was the thought then that it was a coming-out party of sorts for the youngster. He served notice that, yes, the name Correll Buckhalter was one you would remember.

That was then. And this is now: Buckhalter is pouring buckets of sweat as he emerges from the weight room of the NovaCare Complex after a morning workout. He is nodding enthusiastically about the chances that he'll get back to 100 percent this season, but after three awful knee injuries and the same number of seasons spent sidelined because of the ensuing surgeries, well, nothing is close to being a given with Buckhalter.

RB Correll Buckhalter has been productive in the two seasons in which he's been healthy enough to play

When he was a rookie in 2001 and on the way to a team-rookie-record 586 rushing yards on just 129 carries, Buckhalter thought it would just get better and better as he grew older and more mature and more understanding of the ways of the NFL.

Alas, we know that it did not get better for Buckhalter. Just more painful. From the time of the second half of that game in St. Louis when he watched from the sidelines with a sprained ankle, Buckhalter has been on Injured Reserve for three of the four seasons since. First he blew out a knee in a spring practice, non-contact division. Then after bouncing back in 2003 and earning the team's Ed Block Courage Award as part of the Eagles' potent "Three-Headed Monster Attack," Buckhalter went down in the preseason opener in 2004 with a ruptured patellar tendon, an injury he never fully recovered from as he limped off the sidelines in training camp last year, not knowing at the top that the injury would keep him out for yet another entire season.

"It was tough, man," said Buckhalter. "I really prepared myself and I thought I was going to be ready, but it was just fatigue. I didn't build the leg up as much as I needed to. That was my consecutive second year of football that I missed. I looked at it with a positive mind frame. I work hard. I've always worked hard. So this is another chance to work as hard as I can to come back.

"I'm still fortunate. There are a lot of guys who never get a chance to play this game at this level. I've been here. I've had some success and I know I'm going to have more."

Buckhalter is not giving up. He says, in fact, that he knows that he'll be back on the field and back to his old ways and that, in a way that only he can understand, the past rehabilitations from surgery will benefit him this time.

You want to believe him. He's been through so much -- losing three of his five seasons to injuries, showing that vast ability in too-short bursts of action -- and he deserves the chance to get through this latest injury and make it. Really, really make it.

Reality suggests otherwise. Reality says Buckhalter faces uphill odds in his quest.

Reality hasn't met Buckhalter, apparently.

"I can run and I can go side to side and remain pretty stable," he said. "The only thing about running is that I've still got a little limp because I'm lacking some girth in my quad. I'd say I'm 70-75 percent.

"It's not a belief that I'll get all the way back; I know I will. God hasn't brought me this far to have me stop here. I'm still young and I've still got a lot of football in me. My body feels fresh and I'm just ready to go out there and make some plays."

We won't know about Buckhaler until the summer. He says the realistic time table to practice again is July or August.

Until then, he works. And will continue to work.

"I guess guys could quit after so much. You have to have the proper approach and mind frame. I'm positive in this. Some guys could say, 'I'll get better so I can run, and then we'll see.' That's not the way I'm doing it. I am going for it all.

"There is not a day that goes by when I don't think about playing football. I miss the game so much. It's not my life -- God is first, then my family and then it's football -- but I think about it every day. I sit there and visualize myself making plays. I know it sounds crazy, but that's what I do."

When he was just a kid, back in 2001 when he was a rookie and it seemed like the career might go on forever, Buckhalter didn't worry about stashing away his money and looking beyond his playing days.

Now, it's totally different. Buckhalter is "saving money lot I'm supposed to. I had to become more responsible in my savings and my investing. Now I can tell guys to be smart and conservative with their money."

The game waits. Buckhalter hasn't played in a regular-season game since 2003. He knows the exact step-by-step routine he needs to take to get back to the field. No shortcuts. Get in absolute peak condition and get that quad stronger!!! As strong as it can be.

Maybe, if all goes right, Buckhalter will feel the joy once again of dashing through a hole, spinning past a tackler and seeing nothing but green in front of him. He ... could ... go ...

"I miss running into people. I miss making move on somebody. I miss outrunning somebody," he says. "I miss all the aspects of the game. Everything. I'm fired up just thinking about it. A couple of months and I'll be back on the field and we'll see. I just have to keep working until then."

If Carolina doesn't draft a RB, I would like to see Moe Williams here. However, we have a low tolerance for players with character issues, and I'm still trying to sort our William's guilty plea to public disturbance. Bottom line for us is that we can't rely on Foster to stay healthy. I'd like to have someone in the role that Stephen Davis played, change of back, who can get in in the end zone. Williams has shown good goal line potential in the past. Yes, he's old, but not a lot of wear and tear the last couple of seasons. Williams would be better for us than not signing anyone at all.

Kevin Curtis, Shaun McDonald and DeJuan Groce all signed their tenders with St. Louis today, so they're off the board.

Javon Walker belongs on the list now since he was given permission to seek a trade like harrington
