Best running back class ever? (1 Viewer)

Looking back at the 2008 NFL draft, I don't know if there has ever been a better running back class. Look at some of these backs. Chris Johnson, ray rice, rasherd mendenhall, Jonathan Stewart, Felix jones, jamaal Charles, Matt forte, steve slaton, Kevin smith, Darren McFadden, tashard choice, and that's not all of them. Has there ever been a better RB class

And of course, with the #1 pick out of that group I selected McFadden...such a bad pick when you look at the rest of them!

Ha, I think most people did (myself included).Of course, a few rounds later I also took Chris johnson.....and later on I picked Ray Rice (although I traded him away a few weeks later...doh!).

The '69 and '01 classes were excellent:

2001: Tomlinson, Deuece McAllister, Travis Henry, Rudi Johnson, Kevan Barlow, Anthony Thomas, LaMont Jordan, Correll Buckhalter, Michael Bennett and Mike Vick :goodposting:

1969: O.J. Simpson, Calvin Hill, Larry Brown, Dave Hampton, Ed Podolak, Altie Taylor, Ron Johnson, Carl Garrett, Mercury Morris and John "Frenchy" Fuqua.

Right now it looks pretty good but I'm guessing in a few years only the last half won't hold much value. Still dang impressive top 5, maybe 6.

Timmy Hightower also.

2000 class has elite talent...not deep at all, but in the end they may be 600 yards short of having three 10k rushers:

Jamal Lewis - 10k rusher, 2000 rushing yards in one season

Thomas Jones - Likely 10k rusher 74 total TDs

Shaun Alexander - 9400 rushing yards, 100 total TDs

Class of 1997 is even better:

Corey Dillon, Warrick Dunn and Tiki Barber, ALL over 10,000 career rushing yards...the only class to have three RBs do that.

Not as good as those (at least this early), 2006 wasn't shabbyReggie Bush, Laurence Maroney, DeAngelo Williams, Joseph Addai, Maurice Jones-Drew, Leon Washington, Jerome Harrison

Conversely this might be the worst - lots of FBs and the best of that bunch was Edgar Bennett - what a waste of a year for fantasy football drafts when it came to RB. Amp Lee had moments.

1992 1 1 9 9 Tommy Vardell

2 1 19 19 Tony Smith

3 1 21 21 Vaughn Dunbar

4 2 17 45 Amp Lee

5 2 20 48 Siran Stacy

6 3 15 71 Kevin Turner

7 4 1 85 Rodney Culver

8 4 8 92 Tony Brooks

9 4 19 103 Edgar Bennett

10 5 1 113 Maury Toy

11 5 7 119 Dexter McNabb

12 6 4 144 Joe Campbell

13 6 12 152 Mike Gaddis

14 6 27 167 Nate Turner

15 7 17 185 Kevin Smith

16 7 20 188 Scottie Graham

17 8 4 200 Anthony McDowell

18 8 8 204 Scott Lockwood

19 8 9 205 Sam Gash Patriots

20 8 11 207 Muhammad Shamsid-Deen

21 8 16 212 Ronald Humphrey

22 8 20 216 Derrick Moore

23 9 2 226 Ostell Miles

24 10 3 255 Tim Lester Raiders

25 10 7 259 Reggie Yarbrough

26 10 10 262 Mike Saunders

27 10 15 267 Raoul Spears

28 10 21 273 Nikki Fisher

29 11 4 284 Mazio Royster

30 11 5 285 Keith McAfee

31 11 15 295 Charles Evans

I think you can say that about any position when it comes to 1992.
I did not follow football too closely in 1992, but what was the thinking behind the Tommy Vardell pick? Would it be like the equivalent of taking Toby Gearhart top 10 today?

I also took McFadden as the #1 pick in the 2008 draft.

I took C. Johnson with the very last pick of the draft. Everyone said he's probably just going to be punt /kick returner kind of guy.

But I watched a preseason game again STL where he scored a 66 yard TD, and thought to myself at the time "this guy is really really fast, he just flew through that line of scrimmage like it was standing still".

Someone on this board said not too long ago: "tackling CJ is like trying to grab a fish in the water with your bare hands, you think you got it and then it slithers away"....lol

Touchdown Tommy had a nice little college career at Stanford and was considered more of a big back than a blocking back. He could block and pound it up the middle, but he could also find a hole between the tackles and catch the football. It turned out that none of those skills looked as good against NFL talent.

Yeah, the careers of RBs go through so many ups and downs, it take a while to make sense of it.Just look at the '05 Class. All of their careers have been roller-coaster rides (Ronnie B., Ced Benson, Cadillac, Gore, Barber III, Jacobs, Sproles). Those 7 guys have all been on top of the world at times and other times, looked done or like a bust. Long way to go on this '08 class. There's talent here, but it wouldn't be a big stretch for this class to really be unimpressive when it's all said and done. What do we really know about these guys yet?-I love Ray Rice and he looks like the real deal, but he's only had 1 great season.-Stewart is very effective in tandem, but who knows how old he'll be (if ever) when he becomes a primary back.-Felix Jones has less than 150 carries in his entire career.-Mendenhall and Charles were nice last year. Would anybody be shocked if either or both busted this year?-Forte and Slaton tore it up as rookies and looked useless last year (though, in fairness, I guess Forte never really looked good as a rookie either). Not a logical reason for it, but I have a bad feeling about Chris Johnson this year too.

Caddy / Benson / Ronnie Brown have a chance to redeem the 2005 class this year. That is until 2/3 of them are out for the season by game 6.

. True but none of those guys ever were as high as CJ or rice. Gore came close at one point but if Johnson and Rice stay healthy I think they could both be top 10 all time running backs
