This is inspired by a situation in my own league, but it's not a WDIS/ratemyteam/etc. Coming into this season, an owner in my league had the option of keeping either Pierre Thomas or Jonathan Stewart at RB for this season. Myself and another owner in the league disagreed at the time about which one he should keep; now eight weeks into the season, we still disagree about whether or not the owner made the right decision.

The season having played out the way it has so far, which of these two players has been the better value?

Stewart has been horrible, and we learned last week it wasn't because he was sharing carries. He's stuck on a terrible team that does not look to get better this year. Even as the team's RB1 he can't even put up fantasy RB3 numbers.

At least Thomas is a viable RB2 when healthy. He has to return to the lineup at some point this year.... right?

But in terms of a Keeper league, since neither has been good enough to contribute as a starter for this season I think Stewart is better as a Keeper prospect and long term outlook.

They are both bad choices but Pierre Thomas may never play for the Saints again and he is nothing special but rather a product of a great offense

Just to be more clear, we're just talking about the first 8 weeks here - forget about their prospects for the rest of the season, keeper considerations, etc.

Through the first eight weeks of the season, has Thomas been more valuable than Stewart so far, or vice versa?

Thomas' "value" is derived from the fact that you were never tempted to start him. Thus he's contributed zero for many weeks.

Some of those weeks, Stewart has produced below replacement level, thus contributing negative value.

0 > negative. Thomas wins.

This would be easier for me to argue if I knew the specifics, but I'll say this:

Thomas has, when healthy, been startable, and, especially in PPR, been a decent play if you started him. The only bad weeks Pierre has had are the ones where you've started someone else anyway.

If one has been starting Stewart, he's hurt your team every time you've started him.

Therefore, keeping Thomas has worked out better for the team through 8 weeks.
