Beware players saying "I'm fine" (1 Viewer)

First Ryan Grant and now Ryan Mathews. Both said they could have come back and played in the game in which they were injured. Now Grant is out for the year and Mathews may not be fuly back for a few weeks. Do these guys just say this stuff to try to convince THEMSELVES?

Or maybe its players with the first name RYAN that we should be leery.

Grant couldn't put an ounce of pressure on his ankle and had to hop on one leg. Matthews jogged back on to the sidelines from the training room on his own and stood on the sideline the rest of the game.Matthews is fine and will play this weekend IMO. People who picked up Tolbert I know are wishing it not to be true, but I'm very confident he will. (Just my opinion against theirs' I guess).

This just in...coaches and players lie to the media. j/k

Honestly, I think it's as much for the coaching staff as anybody. We need to remember that this is their JOB. It's never a good thing when the coaches and fans get an extended look at your backup. Either a) The guy outplays you and your livlihood is in jeapordy or b) he plays poorly and it only expedites the realization that they need to bring in a player more capable of unseating you in the future. Ask Kolb how quickly it can go wrong. You say you can play through injury until the team learns you can't.

You and him might both think he is fine but dont the doctors make that call. I dont think that the Chargers want to risk their rookie RB getting hurt even worse if they have people that can fill in.

I suspect Tolbert is rostered in just about every league, just because Ryan Mathews is fine!

I smell a Mathews owner hoping he is fine. Time will tell if he is.

I don't think there is a risk since I don't think he is really hurt (by miss an NFL game standards). He jogged back on to the sideline 10 minutes after leaving. At that point, SD was already winning 21-6 and he had fumbled before leaving in the first place. I think him not going back into the game had far more to do with the fumble and lead than it did his ankle. If SD was losing 21-6 when he came back to the sideline, I firmly feel he would have went back into the game. (Again, JMO)

And I smell a ton of Tolbert owners hoping he is not.I own Tolbert as well so I'm covered either way. I just firmly feel Mathews is fine.

If he isn't hurt, why didn't he practice yesterday. I think you are putting too much stock into how he jogged off the field. Adrenelin is a powerful force. You find out how bad the sprain is the next day. He may play on Sunday; but he is definately hurt right now. Otherwise he would have practiced yesterday. All just my opinion of course.

Very confident? I wish I was. Matthews did not practice Wed. It is reported that he has a high ankle sprain. They play an NFC team - the Seahawks. The odds seem to be that he sits. Ray Rice said that his ankle is fine too. Now I guess we have to worry about him!

Smart move to pick up Tolbert.

Tons of players with minor injuries skip Wed practices. I'm contesting that the injury is no where near severe enough to make him miss a game. I'm not saying his ankle is not hurt at all.

I drafted Tolbert as Mathew's handcuff. Spent some time on a Chargers message board knowing Mathews was a target of mine and learned from Chargers fans pre-draft that if Mathews were to go down, Tolbert and not Sproles would be the play.I always draft my starting RBs handcuffs.

Difference being Rice practiced on Wednesday.

I would agree not to put too much stock into the "he didn't practice Wednesday" talk since a lot of players miss that day. I think the whole "fine" talk is simply an athlete state of mind. These players are in another world, it's why they demand trades, complain about playing time, say they are healthy. If you are a pro athlete your ego is so massive no matter who you are, some just use it better than others. I believe that Matthews truly think he is fine no matter what doctors say because he is Ryan Matthews and what could stop him. Not saying this is a bad thing, it's why he is a pro athlete and I sit on a message board talking about him.

I think teams want the team they are getting ready to play to have to gameplan for every option. Therefore, guys like Matthews will say they are fine even if they know they are not going to play. In most cases what athletes and coaches say is pretty much lip service. The injury report is often a joke as well at this point and more of a formality. Guys like BB catch crap for manipulating injury status, but let's be honest, they all do it. As a coach you want SEA to have to gameplan for both Matthews and Tolbert. Spending time game planning for more options means you are spending less time game planning and fine tuning for one option.

I think there are some of the other things thrown in about an athlete and wanting to think he can play, etc....I am always very wary of hammy's and groins.....I think even though a guy might say he will play, it seems that teams usually error on the side of caution with these since they are so easy to aggravate.....especially for skilled position players.....like I own Turner in a league and I know right now all indications are that he is going to play, but I would not be surprised one bit if he is inactive Sunday morning.......
