Biden Denied Holy Communion. (1 Viewer)

Same here.

In a nutshell, historically, homosexuality is "bad" because the Catholic church wanted as many followers as possible. Keeping them poor and ignorant was a bonus.  Priests aren't allowed to marry because they were leaving money to their wives and families instead of the church.

As I also previously posted, my oldest son has a female friend that is gay. She has tried to kill herself several times. We've visited her in the hospital.  You want to feel sorry for yourself? Go to the local juvenile trauma ward and see what some young people are going through. Hear the stories how some of them have succeeded in taking their life. How hopeless these children's lives are. Like I said, it makes me sick to my stomach.
I don't inherently disagree with anything posted here. However, the more party-line Catholic reasons that homosexuality is "bad" and priests shouldn't marry are the following:

1. It's a pretty stalwart tenet of catholicism  that God created sex to both unite (enhance the Sacrament of Matrimony) and procreate (make babies). In essence, you can't have one without the other. So, premarital sex becomes a sin because it doesn't unite through matrimony even if there may be procreation. Similarly, homosexuality and birth control are sins because they eliminate the procreation aspect of sex. In addition, and this is where the church lost my wife, this dogma is extended as far as to make things like fertility treatments and IVF a sin.

2. The idea that priests shouldn't marry stems from the Sacrament of Holy Orders where the belief is that a priest "marries" God. In that sense, God has chosen that the priest's path (i.e. vocation) shall be to the community and therefore the priest is logistically stunted from being able to also go down the vocational path of matrimony and procreation.

In short, the gist of the purpose of life in Catholicism is to choose one of two vocational paths: become a priest or make babies. Anything outside of that is generally considered sinful.

My mom is a pretty devout Catholic and doesn't share these views.  I actually know quite a few practicing Catholics (including ones that work at Catholic schools) that don't see homosexuality this way.
Yup. Me too. Bunch of them over here in Europe actually are ok with abortion too (latest example being Ireland)

If there’s one topic that the PSF could use more of in these dark times it's religion, obviously :chooseyourownemoji:
We used to talk religion a lot. I’m sure we had our ugly moments, but we mostly had great conversations and didn’t threaten the existence of the FFA with our actions. I miss those threads. This has been a good thread for the most part.

Former Catholic here, thanks for your input.

How does #2 jive with the recommendation that married men in the Amazon should be able to be ordained? Are priests in the Amazon able to go down two vocational paths at one time?

My aunt was a nun and is HEAVILY involved with the Cathotlic Church and doesn't share this view.  My uncle is a Jesuit currently living in Rome and working directly with the Vatican, and he doesn't share this view either.
Jesuits always seem like the most learned and progressive of the Catholic orders.

I’m a former Catholic turned atheist and he is very cool to talk to. He has a lot of interesting perspective having bounced between working in Rome and teaching at a Catholic High School here. He is the only Jesuit I have any experience with, but your description is accurate of him.

I also like the Benedictines. Probably the most socially liberal.

Life long Catholic here and I think what the priest did was very wrong.   Assuming Biden was in good standing a priest should not deny communion to a member of the church.  Biden's political views are between he and God.

It is especially disappointing considering the Catholic church's recent history on protecting child molesters.
“do as I say, not as I do”.

This has been my experience as well. I think you can see that in their role and style of education as well.  Doesn’t seem as rote nor closeminded (I don’t mean closeminded in a negative way but more a closed belief system where the answer is “cause the Bible/Priest/Pope/God said so” if that makes sense).
