Biesel could have huge #'s (1 Viewer)

Last week Dansby goes down in the first quarter with one tackle and Biesel comes in with 8 solos and 3 assist. That's pretty good numbers. Now he will start against Washington who has been allowing the LB's to score in the top six in our format, probably due to Washington's time of posession and their running game. With QB#3 now in charge of the Arizona offense, I would expect Biesel and the defense to have even more opportunities to rack up tackles. What I dont get is why Hayes would be rated at #4 this week by FBG but Biesel to be at #58

What gives?

Also, is there some reason to believe that Biesel after a week of practice as the starter, is going to come out on third down? Homers?

I'll get a lot more in-depth on this subject in this weeks EOTG but in short there are several considerations here that go well beyond the fact that Beisel had a big game in relief. Sure he will have a week to practice but the coaches will have a week to prepare as well and figure out how they can best patch the hole created by the loss of one of their key playmakers. Maybe he plays on passing downs, maybe the club elects to use more 4-3 alignment. What we do know for certain is that Monty Beisel can't carry Karlos Dansby's jock much less do the same job in this defense. Beisel is a decent backup but he's not a playmaker by any stretch. You can assume that he'll step right in just the way he did on Sunday but the reality of it is that we have no idea what Beisel's role will be until we see it. With that in mind, I simply can't project him with big numbers at this point. As for Hayes, he is #4 for all the reasons you mentioned plus the fact that he is a know commodity and is now the undisputed leader in the middle of this defense. No matter what the coaching staff elects to do, we can be certain that Hayes is going to be an every down player and we already know he is VERY capable.

If/when I can get a better feel for Beisel's role later in the week, his projections will be adjusted accordingly. That said, we know he's not a serious big play threat. Without that potential factored into his projection he may show up lower in the rankings even if he becomes a very consistent tackle producer. The rankings are based purely on projected numbers and relate no consideration for consistency or confidence. Unfortunately this is an imperfect way to make rankings/cheat sheets but its the best system we have at this point.

Thanks, John. I can appreciate that, and it seems that the thing to do is try and find out how they adjust through practice this week. I agree that Beisel is no more than a journeyman LB, but also expect the other team to feel the same which could result in them going at him more. I never inferred that Hayes wasnt worthy of #4 status, just that unless Beisel comes out on third down, he should be good for 7 to 9 tackles this week also which would make him a good start in most leagues with bye issues.
