Big Ben Whining AGAIN! (1 Viewer)

Hines Ward spends his time these days at home in Atlanta, recovering from postseason surgery on his right knee. A different kind of hurt was delivered by his own quarterback last week. Ben Roethlisberger called for the Steelers to acquire a tall wide receiver, specifically to help inside the 20 and for a bailout target when he's under pressure. He said he had that with 6-foot-5 Plaxico Burress, but not since after the 2004 season. "I'm always going to ask for a tall receiver," Roethlisberger said in an interview with the Post-Gazette. "That's just me. Our receivers are unbelievable, but our tallest guy might be Hines. Or Santonio [Holmes]. Hines is going to say he's 6 foot, but he's 5-11." That stung Ward, the most decorated Steelers receiver in history. "I don't hear Tom Brady or Peyton Manning asking for that," Ward said yesterday.

:goodposting: This is just another one of Ben's excuses
Excuse him for what? Being one of the best young QB's in the league?Yeah, please excuse him for that.

By the sounsd of it, Hines Ward is doing the whining. All Big Ben said was he would like to add a tall WR to the team. Apparently that hurt Wards feelings, maybe Ward should stop acting like a girl.

how tall is wes welker, donte stallworth and jabar gaffney??????Ben Watson?
Just because Tom Brady doesn't want the same things doesn't mean it's wrong for Big Ben to want to have a tall WR to throw to.That being said, just because he'd like to have a tall WR doesn't mean he has to publicly express it and potentially make his WR's look bad. While I think Hines probably took it worse than he needed to, his reaction is understandable. If Big Ben wants a tall WR, let him go talk to his coach or team higher-ups, not the media. But no, I don't think it's "whining" and he has every right to have different preferences than other star QB's like Manning or Brady.

;) I think Ward knows his time is coming to an end. Holmes is #1 there and if Ben gets his wish then Ward will see even less time. Hence the whining from Ward.

It sounds like he was baited into saying that a bit. It's too bad because it sounds as if Ben was looking to give a good interview, talking some truth about playing QB and giving answers beyond the standard cliches most athletes give us. You don't hear Tom Brady and Peyton Manning talk like that (although I've heard Manning throw his guys under the bus), but I guarantee you they think things like that and probably make it known in private (Brady for instance - you don't think he didn't walk into Pioli's office at some point and ask for a better receiver than Reche Caldwell?) Or Brett Favre, lobbying to get Moss - you could take that as an insult if you're Donald Driver.

The thing is, it's a sign of professionalism to not publicly throw your colleagues under the bus (and that's in any profession, not just football). In football, with the media scrutiny so intense, pretty much any comment that can be twisted to sound negative becomes "throwing teammates under the bus," which is why athletes always give such boilerplate answers in interviews (in Ben's case, he even says "our receivers are unbelievable," and people are still saying he's a whiner). I think Ward's retort was kind of a subtle way of telling Ben to grow up and be a professional.

I'm a little slow. Please point me to the part where Big Ben whines.

All I see is a quote with him saying the passing game could add a tall receiver.

These boards get a little crazy with everybody's pet hatreds vying for attention.

Do you ever see Brady just throwing it up to any of those guys? No.Stop it already. Seriously.
Actually, you see Tom Brady throwing touchdowns to them. And not complaining about how small they are. Same goes for Manning. Do you think Jake Delhomme wishes Steve Smith was taller?!Football isn't just "throwing it up" to receivers. I hate Hines Ward with a passion, but if Ben's sitting there wishing Hines was taller, he's an idiot.

I guess the only way to get Big Ben to stop whining is to drive in front of his motorcycle. Then when the swelling goes down in that overinflated cranium of his, he'll start chirpin' again.

 Roethlisberger isn't making excuses. When you throw for 32 TDs and have a better season than Peyton Manning, you are getting it done with a bunch of 6'0" WRs.

:pickle: at the insinuation that Indy can "get it done" but PIT can't even though Big Ben outplayed Peyton.

32 TDs in 14 1/2 games and a 104 QB rating. "Perhaps he should be looking for Heath Miller & Nate Washington more often." Yeah, he's going to have to do a whole lot better than a 104 QB rating next season. Maybe that will get him up to 108, and then you'll complain that he doesn't get 6'7" Matt Spaeth involved enough.

He isn't complaining about how small his WRs are. He's simply saying that adding a taller WR to the mix they already have would give them more options in the passing game.

seems like the original poster of this thread is a big ben hater or a steeler hater, it's one of them or both because i haven't seen ben "whine"about anything, in fact he just stated alot of the sacks this year were his fault for holding the ball too long most of the time, which is true....this is a non-story and not sure why it is even being discussed.

It was portrayed the same way by some people around here as well. Just trying to make a story out of non story imo because the Steelers sell.

True, but unfortunately you can't say that without implying that your current receivers are too small.

This is a ridiculous thread...this should be a non-story. Seems like if anyone whined it was Ward and it seems the press is probably blowing that out of proportion. I guess since the Giants and Pats refuse to get into a war of words, the press needs to create some conflict for more interesting stories than NY saying NE is a great team and vice versa. And the whole boot thing...don't even get me started...

I was under the impression that Brady complained quite loudly about the WR situation in NE going into last year. Not that he was specifically calling for a tall one, but he didn't just keep his mouth shut either.

I need to add a girlfriend with larger breasts.

Hines Ward needs to shut his big yapper and stop crying. A tall WR is a nice weapon to have in certain situations. (just ask Tom Brady how he feels about Randy Moss)

I see nothing wrong with what Big Ben said.

I think the issue here is that as QB, you need to understand your position as center / leader of the team and organization. While nothing Ben said was wrong and in fact has a lot of merit, the WAY he said it (without coddling his own players - that's the reality) was not the QB thing to do. If only Ben had thrown in something about "having a tall WR would really help take the pressure off our current guys who are as good as anyone in the league" blah blah coach/qb speak this would have been avoided.

Now, would it be nice if a guy could just speak his mind and not have to worry about hurting grown men's feelings? Of course... but that is not the reality and Ben has been in the league long enough to know a little better... just toss your current teamates a bone so it does not appear like you feel they are lacking (even if they are)

This is the dumbest thread ever. It's the reason why people just go to the FFA. It was started to bash Big Ben, then Hines, then the Steelers as a whole, then make stupid motorcycle comments and nobody is even mentioning the fact that it's from a website I've never heard of in my entire life. Please go piss somewhere else.

It sounds like he was just stating that he feels more comfortable with taller receivers inside the redzone. Thats totally understandable being 6'0 isn't really a huge redzone threat... heath miller was very active this season inside the 20... it's just what ben likes... doesn't mean he's knocking ward or saying he's receivers aren't good. To me it sounds like Ward is taking this a little too personal and to a level where it shouldn't hit.

A lot of moronic haters in here..... :lmao:

This is stupid. Hines is stupid for taking offense, and the critics are stupid for thinking that a QB who wants another large target for his red zone passes is whining. It's not like he was blaming a poor season he had on this - he's coming off of a very good year!

Get a life, people.

The fact is that this quote from Ben is over 3 weeks old. It's only getting some publicity lately b/c Ward wasn't in Pittsburgh when the quote was originally made. Early last week, a Pittsburgh reporter talked to Ward and asked him his opinion about Ben's statement. Hines didn't know what Ben had said, and when he was told, he gave his comment immediately. If he had been able to think about the statement, I doubt he would have had the same response.

For the record, the original quote came as an answer to the question (asked of Ben) "What would your offseason wish list be?" Ben's response was 1) Get his contract renegotiatian done this offseason, 2) Steelers re-sign G Alan Faneca, & 3) acquire a tall WR. Ben in no way slighted his current WRs, in fact pointing out that they were "outstanding." He merely said that he would like to have a taller WR. I see no problem with it, since it would add an element to the red-zone and short yardage packages.

 There was nothing wrong with what Roethlisberger said. Ward needs to get over it.

Ben needs to get with Ward ASAP and clear this up. Whether he thinks what he says was right or wrong, he need to communicate his intentions, which seem innocent. As a leader, results are more important than right or wrong.

On the other hand, they both could be joking around.

For all the people criticizing Ward I think they should remember that Hines held out in '05 because the contract extension offered by PIT didn't include enough guaranteed $, not because he wasn't happy with the $ offered. I'm not as up on PIT contracts as the many PIT homers may be but I thought it was Wards decision just before the season began to bend so he could finish his entire career as a Steeler. I do remember he mentioned thinking the deal would "stretch" to 5-7 years(I remember this because I seriously doubted it at the time) enabling him to finish his career in PIT. At the time he was reluctant to reveal the terms of his extension which always makes me think the player is likely bending more than he's choosing to admit.

If he felt like he didn't get enough guaranteed $ back when his market value was at it's highest I can certainly understand why Hines would be hyper sensitive to anything that might suggest PIT needs more help at WR after Hines has already dropped to PIT's #2 WR. I don't think Ben intended it that way and I doubt he was taking Wards contract into consideration when he made the remark. If you ask most QB's they'll always want one more weapon on offense.

Truth is the Steelers should have re-signed Plaxico and draft Nick Mangold over Santonio.
Mangold? He's been pretty bad.
And at the time Plax hit the market, he was "damaged goods" in the eyes of a lot of NFL teams, perhaps the Steelers as well. It was not until this year that Plax finally seemed to mature a bit - apparantly coming into this season he was more dedicated re: workouts and such, and the guy has been a great teamate and true warrior this year playing on a really bad ankle. That said, up until this year, while Plax seemed to be a good guy, he did not have the focus necessary to excel and had some other issues - perhaps amplified on a mouthy team led by a very poor example of a teamate Tiki, along with the loudmouth Shockey and an Eli who had not yet found his voice (in part because of those mouths surrounding him). That said, Eli and Plax have been the #1 QB-WR hookup since he came to the Giants, and now that he seems to have finally matured Plax, when healthy, is as good as any WR in the league. Of course he has not been healthy, but even so he has been a very positive force on this team. But when Plax hit the FA market it was not just Pitt that passed... the Giants got him at a relative bargain considering the talent and even so many criticized the move because of Plax's issues at the time.

Sounds to me like you'd be better off watching soap operas than football, because you obviously crave some drama. So casually mentioning that a tall WR would help is "whining". Seriously, what a bunch of 14 year-old girls we have running around this place sometimes.

I think you should head into the Romo/Jessica Simpson drama thread, you can get your fill of tabloid garbage aimed at adolescent girls there while the rest of us talk about actual football.
