Those first five teams have the biggest payrolls in order and the Giants are 8th.

The Yankees and Red Sox both have extremely suspect starting pitching (26th and 28th as starters). The Tigers can't drive home runs the old fashion way and their bullpen has been awful while the Angels have been inept at the plate. The Phillies seem to be the same team the Tigers are, can't hit when it counts and their bullpen is horrendous. The Giants are light hitting but their pitching is strong.

I think the Yankees are going to rebound because their line-up is just so good and their bullpen should be pretty decent even without Rivera. Tigers play in the AL Central which helps, Phillies will be better if they can ever get healthy but that division is incredibly strong. You have to figure the Dodgers will fade some so the Giants might get back in it but they just don't have enough hitting IMO. The Angels are bad and they have the best team in baseball at the moment in their division, which makes it tough. I think the Angels are in the most trouble, then the Red Sox who seem to have a lot of problems all over the roster.

The problem with the Yanks and SAWX! is that BAL, TOR and TB are all good. They don't have cake on the schedule. I don't think the Yanks have enough trade bait to bring a legit starter. To be honest, the Sox might position themselves better going forward if they sold at the deadline this year.

I have to believe the Angels will get their hitting together. When they do, they should get a Wildcard.

The Phillies are a bit like the Sox and Yanks. The have some pieces to sell (ala the Sox).....but they've got enough talent to keep them in the race until the end (ala the Yanks). IF they get in, they could do some damage.....but they might be better off selling and getting some Minor league talent. What do you think Hamels, Victorino or even Cliff Lee gets them?

The Yanks will be fine - great hitting, great pen, great ace. I don't think any of Tampa, Toronto, and Baltimore (ok, Baltimore a bit) are flukes so they have their work cut out for them but unless age catches up to them fast they'll win 90 and that'll do.

Boston has a lot of holes, but they're hanging around regardless. I'd bet against them if I had to but I think they will be there in September. They're reluctant to but they have the farm system to make a splash at the trade deadline.

The ANgels can't bury a much bigger hole, but they have a very good rotation, a very good pen, and bats that haven't yet woken up. I still think they get a wildcard. I'd bet on them before Boston.

I can't get over how bad Philly and San Francisco's offenses are, they won't ever fall completely out of it due to their starting pitching but they're going to need a lot to go right to be alive in October.

Detroit? It's sad when you can't come up with anything more than the division they play in will keep them around if the ever remove their head from their ###. This is a bad baseball team. Statistically there, but the little things in game have been killing them all year long. Not sure what it will take with such a weak farm system, but targeting a bullpen arm or 2 in July is probably the best route to possibly solving the problems.
