Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (2 Viewers)

Conference tournaments are stupid. Consider this:

Michigan beats Wisconsin during the regular season, finishes higher than Wisconsin in the BIG standings, and beats Wisconsin for the BIG tourney championship,. They have very similar W-L records (24-9 vs 26-8).

Of course Wisconsin ends up a #3 seed and Michigan a #5 seed for the NCAAs

IMO Michigan fans should be complaining more about Purdue getting a 4 seed above you. That one I don’t get.

I guess my point is less outrage and more that for some conferences their tourney has meaning b/c it is life or death. Teams that win get a berth where they otherwise could not.

If a team like Michigan can't even improve its NCAA seeding, then even having the BIG tourney at all makes zero sense (other than extra revenue of course).

Auburn loses in semis of SEC but still overall #1? smh

BINGO!

The BTT hasnt meant diddly squat for the NCAA tournament for years.

It’s fun to go to because you get to basically see almost the entire big ten conference play at least once in 4 days. But the outcome doesn’t mean jack when it comes to seeding. Been that way for years. All it really does is basically solidify the committees pre-BTT seeding. One reason for that is the timing of the tourney. It’s purely for money and ratings.

The committee had Michigan at #17 overall and Purdue #14 overall. Seems it would be very easy to just switch the two, unless CBS has a deadline for getting the graphics for the brackets done. Anyway, still BIG champs

Good point. I was speaking more in general.

Doesn't matter now, though. Tip it off and play the games.

And to stick them both into playing Thursday games. I get there are alot of moving parts but that's harsh as well.

Yea...we got super lucky. I guess that's payback from all the horrible seedings we got in the 80s and 90s.

Buzz Williams to Maryland? Interesting hire. I saw him up close when he was at Marquette for about 5-6 years. People were surprised when he left Marquette for Virginia Tech, a move the local alumni considered a step down in prestige and opportunity. His reputation is that he's good at rebuilding programs that are in the dumps, but often rubs people the wrong way and has a hard time staying put. I'm not sure he's the right fit for the Terps but they definitely could do worse. He does win games and I believe has had success everywhere he's gone.

Head-scratcher for me. Not so much for why Maryland would do it, but why would Williams? I get that he was at a football school, but he's coming into a horrible situation. Every single player I could name is out of there - including one I didn't even know was there because he got poked in the eye and missed the entire season. MD's top commit for next year de-committed yesterday. Williams has no ties to the area that I'm aware of, so it's not like he can call in favors to quickly restock the roster. And there's no AD in place.

I have no clue what his working environment, funds, or pay was at A&M.

I know the guy wins, but I've heard the same as you that he can be a pain and wears out his welcome.

From a Maryland perspective, this feels like a "satisfy the boosters with a name" move to me.

I wanted them to basically punt the next year or two and hire Tony Skinn from George Mason. He's from the area, coached at MD for a couple of years, and - I think - can build a good program.
