Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

Which of the Big 10 teams advance to the final 8?!! (4)Indiana vs. (1)Kentucky [Kentucky favored by 9](1) Michigan State vs. (4)Louisville [MSU favored by 5](1)Syracuse vs. (4)Wisconsin [syracuse favored by 3.5](2)Ohio State vs. (6)Cincinnati [OSU favored by 7.5]While Indiana has been playing well, I think Kentucky is still the best team in the country, and see this game as somewhat of a blowout. Nothing against Indiana, but Kentucky is damn good, and will have a revenge factor to keep the pedal down late. I guess Kentucky by 16. MSU just seems to be destined for another final four. I think they'll find a way to scrape a win out in a very close game. I love how well Nix has been playing, and expect Draymond to be able to make a play when it is needed. I predict MSU by 3.Of all the #1 seeds, I think WI has the best chance against Syracuse, but am afraid that their athleticism will win out in the end. I'm envisioning a game like the UNC game at the beginning of the season, where the Badgers make Syracuse look bad, but just don't have the weapons to keep up on offense. Bucky keeps it close, but a second half scoring drought will be too much for them to overcome. I guess Syracuse by 6. Similar to the Indiana game, I expect this to be a bit of a blowout as well. The only way I see this as close is if Sullinger, or actually ANY OSU starter get into foul trouble early. OSU has almost no depth, but their starting 5 are as good as any in the country. I predict OSU by 10.
Hard to argue any of your picks, but I give Wiscy a better than decent shot at knocking off 'Cuse. The Orange doesn't play great defense which will keep the Badgers in the game. If their defense can stifle Syracuse like it has on occasion to other top caliber teams this year, I like their chances.
I concur.

I'm a die-hard Badger fan and didn't want to have my homerism get in the way. I do really like their match-up, but they have a tendency to hit 6-8 minute cold spells where their offense looks dreadful. I don't think they can survive that kind of a stretch against 'Cuse. Gasser, Brust and/or Wilson have the ability the be the "extra" hot hand to keep them in the game, and Bo is going to have to find a way to find a hot hand to avoid the FG-less stretches that bring this team down. I'd LOVE to have a WI/OSU game to make the final four!!!

ESPN reporting Shaka Smart turned down the Illinois offer. As an Indiana fan, I'm glad they won't have to play against that defense 1-2 times every year.

(Of course, as an IU fan, I'd prefer that they kept Weber around :P )

What the hell is going on up North?

Evan Smotrycz transferring and Burke considering leaving for the NBA? I like Burke, but didn't realize he was even considered a prospect at this point.

I know it's the NIT, but the Golden Gophers are playing well and advanced to the final four as a #6 seed. All games were on the road so the extra practice and games helps. Sampson III is an ok player, but anybody watching can see that it's addition by subtraction with him injured.

I said the same thing before Mbakwe tore an acl, but if he gets a medical redshirt and comes back ready next season, I see the Minnesota competing for the Big 10 title.

Dre Hollins, Freshman PG is a star already. 91% FT led Big 10. Possible POY candidate as Soph?

Rodney Williams grew up and is finally showing he's a better player.

Eliason, 2-time POY in Nebraska, is a mobile big with a good head for the game. Will only be a Soph.

Welch will be a Sr and shot like 42% from 3. Good combo guard.

Austin Hollins (son of Lionel Hollins, former 76er and Grizzlies Coach) will be a Jr and can score and shoot 3's.

Fr Guard Joe Coleman had some breakout games this year but hit a wall and came back down to earth a bit. Still playing a lot and will be a good Big 10 player. Good penetrator. Mr. Basketball in MN as a Sr.

Mo Walker, who looked good as a true Freshman in non-conf last year before tearing a knee, sat out all this year too and is a big boy, but can pass too. Reminds me of a poor man's Draymond Green. His beef will help in the physical Big 10 against the likes of strong teams like Mich St.

Kfan radio has been ripping Tubby, and the offense can get stagnant, but I've seen nice progress and they play hard. Any coach losing a Top 10 national player like Mbakwe would struggle some. It was a big blow. It's not like you can sign a FA or make a trade to replace him.

I don't see any reason why the NCAA wouldn't give Mbwake a 5th season, so that means they probably won't. Tubby isn't John Wooden, but he's certainly not as bad as Minnesota fans make him out to be. Probably sound like a broken record by now, but he's had some seriously bad luck the past few years. If Mbwake comes back next year, then Minnesota should finish in the upper half of the Big 10 and be a solid tourney team at worst. The NIT is good for teams who take the right approach. Extra practice and competition is never a bad thing.

Which of the Big 10 teams advance to the final 8?!!

(4)Indiana vs. (1)Kentucky [Kentucky favored by 9]

(1) Michigan State vs. (4)Louisville [MSU favored by 5]

(1)Syracuse vs. (4)Wisconsin [syracuse favored by 3.5 4]

(2)Ohio State vs. (6)Cincinnati [OSU favored by 7.5 7]
Point spreads have changed slightly, showing that people have been picking Syracuse and Ohio State more than Vegas would like. MSU and Indiana spreads are untouched. Can't wait until tonight!

He's projected as a first round pick...late first round at this point. Not sure why he wouldn't look into it. If he stays it can only help his stock rise. I think Smotrycz caught everyone off guard. I saw it and was shocked.

Big 10 laid in egg last night with MSU and WI both losing. I expected WI to lose due to a scoring drought, though it happened in the first half (last 6 minutes), not the second. I am dumbfounded that MSU played like they did. I don't recall seeing an Izzo coached team seem that much out of sorts. They didn't seem to have much energy from the get go. I didn't watch any of the OSU game, but the box score suggests that Sullinger and Thomas owned the paint, and Sullinger was able to get to the line quite a bit. The scariest part of the box score to me is that 4 OSU starters played 35+ minutes. I'm hoping fatigue doesn't show up in upcoming games. Tonight it's Indiana! Here's to hoping for a miracle :banned:

I was really impressed by Wisconsin. I was really stunned by Michigan State. Did not see that coming.

I know they wanted the "big name" and were turned down, but Groce is a solid hire for Illinois. He's been part of big programs in big conferences and has recruited well at Ohio, even in Chicago. From a fan perspective, it sucks he has decided to leave the Bobcats so soon, but it's pretty understandable.

Look for Ohio to dip back into Thad's staff again too. Boals is my guess, as he graduated from Ohio in the '90s.

If Mbwake decides to come back, the Gophers should be in the running for the title. Plenty of size with Trevor, Eliason, Walker up front. Williams is actually putting the ball on the floor now and attacking the basket. If he can add a second move (other than the "go to the left and scoop it" move), he's a legit threat. If Dre Hollins plays in the conference like he has in the NIT, he'll be the best PG in the conference. Nice supporting case with the other Hollins, Coleman, and Welsch. Talented and deep. If everything comes together, we haven't had a team like this since the Clem glory days.

On a side note, this is why I still like the NIT. Teams that take it seriously can really use the time, practice, and competition to work on things. But I love college basketball, so maybe I'm in the minority. In response to your post:It appears that Ohio State and MSU will be taking significant losses. They'll still have plenty of talent on the floor though.Michigan "might" lose Burke, although I'll be surprised if Burke gets a 1st round grade. That said, Michigan has a nice class coming in will have more talent on the floor. Whether that translates into more wins remains to be seen. Indiana has a nice class coming in and might be the favorites next year.Wisconsin and Purdue will be Wisconsin and Purdue. If Mbwake comes back, then Minnesota is a very strong team and I think they finish in the top 4, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them compete for a Big 10 title. At worst, top half of the league and an NCAA tourney bid. I just can't predict anything with this conference right because it's so strong. You can have a very good team and still lose 6 or 7 conference games.

Gophers also might end up with Trent Lockett, transfer from Arizona State who is leaving to be closer to his mom who is dying of cancer and is from Minnesota. If they can make room for him and he does decide that's where he wants to play that's another great piece.

With all the declarations out of the way, I took a quick look at how I see the Big Ten shaping up next year. This could be the best year of Big Ten basketball in quite some time.

1. Indiana Hoosiers – The Hoosiers return their entire starting 5 from last season, and add one of the nation’s top 2-3 recruiting classes to the mix. Both Cody Zeller and Christian Watford are talented enough to be Big Ten Player of the Year candidates, and I expect freshman PG Yogi Ferrell to challenge for Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Assembly Hall is the best home court advantage in the conference and I doubt they lose more than 2 games there all year. They are the most talented team in the conference on paper, so barring something unforeseen they should be in contention for the title.

Projected Seed - 1

2. Michigan Wolverines – Had Trey Burke declared for the draft, Michigan would likely be a bubble team. With him, they are contenders for the Big Ten championship again. Tim Hardaway Jr. returns after a bit of a sophomore slump, but he is still a very talented player. Michigan adds the Big Ten’s 2nd best recruiting class, and SF Glenn Robinson III, PF Mitch McGary and SG Nick Stauskas will all play heavy minutes from the start. This will be the most talented roster that John Beilein has ever coached, but it remains to be seen how long it will take for all the new faces to gel.

Projected Seed - 2

3. Michigan State Spartans – There is a bit of uncertainty with MSU right now. As of right now we don’t know how well Brandon Dawson’s knee will heal or if Derrick Nix will be good to go for next season. Even without them MSU is a very deep and talented team though. Gary Harris is in my opinion the best freshman coming into the conference and I would not be surprised to see him lead the team in scoring from day one. Freshman F Matt Costello and G Denzel Valentine also have a good chance to make an impact. As usual, MSU’s trademark will be their tough D.

Projected Seed - 3

4. Ohio State Buckeyes – Getting DeShaun Thomas back was a huge plus for the Buckeyes. He is a likely BTPOY and possibly even NPOY candidate. Aaron Craft is one of the top PG’s in the conference and the best defender. There are enough talented pieces on the roster who will step up into the vacated positions for Ohio St. to be successful. As of right now I view OSU as a slight step back from the top 3 teams, but not by much.

Projected Seed - 4

5. Wisconsin Badgers – Jordan Taylor is a big loss, but if any team is equipped to lose a PG it is Wisconsin. Their offense is not heavily PG centric, so they should be alright without him. They return a lot of talented pieces for next season, and add Sam Dekker, who will provide instant offense to the Badgers right away.

Projected Seed - 4

6. Iowa Hawkeyes – Iowa started out the year very slowly, but by the end of the year they were a much better team. The Hawkeyes have a solid nucleus with Aaron White, Melsahn Basabe, Roy Marble and Zach McCabe. To that core they add one of the Big Ten’s best recruiting classes, highlighted by PG Mike Gesell and C Adam Woodbury. I think McCaffrey is one of the better coaches in the league as well.

Projected Seed - 9

7. Minnesota Golden Gophers – Trevor Mbawke’s return is huge for the Gophers. He is one of the 10 best players in the Big Ten, and having him back makes Minnesota an entirely different team. Andre Hollins emerged as a big time player down the stretch, and Rodney Williams is a really good player as well.

Projected Seed - 10

8. Purdue Boilermakers – Purdue loses its top two players in F Robbie Hummel and PG Lewis Jackson. They have a few solid returning pieces, but lack star power. They have an excellent recruiting class coming in, but I don’t see a single player on the roster for next year who I think will be an All Big Ten caliber player.

Projected Seed - NIT

9. Illinois Fighting Illini – The Illini took a big step towards becoming a better basketball team when they fired Bruce Weber. I am a bit skeptical of new coach John Groce, but I think at the minimum he will be an improvement over Weber. Brandon Paul returns, as does DJ Richardson, so there is some talent to work with.

Projected Seed - NIT

10. Northwestern Wildcats – Northwestern missed out on its best chance to make the tourney last season. With the loss of John Shurna, I can’t really see a way that they will be better this season. That being said, they are enough pieces (namely Drew Crawford) to produce some upsets throughout the year.

Projected Seed - NIT

11. Penn State Nittany Lions – Tim Frazier is one of the best players in the Big Ten, and when combined with Jermaine Marshall, he provides Penn St. with a solid backcourt. The problem is, there isn’t much else there. Frazier will lead them to a few upsets this year, but they are far from tourney contention.

Projected Seed - N/A

12. Nebraska Cornhuskers – Nebraska loses its two best players off of a team that was the leagues worst to begin with. I have a hard time seeing the Cornhuskers win more than 3 conference games this season.

Projected Seed - N/A

With all the declarations out of the way, I took a quick look at how I see the Big Ten shaping up next year. This could be the best year of Big Ten basketball in quite some time.
Nice write up! re: Wisconsin; Jordan Taylor will be a large loss for them. He has an amazing knack for scoring and protecting the ball. He will be extremely hard to replace, but they do have all of the other typical pieces that WI needs (good team defense, excellent shooters, smart players). Dekker will hopefully bring in some new offense that is lacking. Evans will have to take over a much larger role in the offense, and Gasser/Brust/Berggren will have to get more consistent looks. I believe Ryan will somehow find a way to make all this happen, and get WI back to a team that people don't want to play, but know they can possibly beat. I like your seeding of them.

Nice job. I think Glenn Robinson III is being a bit under looked. He has been every bit the player Gary Harris has this last 6 months. ESPN just gave him a fifth star and many expect he could move even higher as he has stood out in so many of the All Star Camps/All Star Games he has appeared at. He looks like he could be a premiere wing player from day one. Harris might have a slightly better all around game, but Robinson might be the better pure scorer.

MSU reinstated Nix to the team, with conditions. I'm not exactly sure what the conditions are, but this Izzo quote may be a clue:

“I am going to challenge him,” Izzo said after Nix issued a public apology Thursday. “I am going to definitely make life miserable for him, because I want him to be successful.”

Excited to see this team rebuild around Byrd and Terrone Johnson. I think Terrone has a shot to be second team all big ten if picks up where he left off during the BT and NCAA tournaments.

“I am going to challenge him,” Izzo said after Nix issued a public apology Thursday. “I am going to definitely make life miserable for him, because I want him to be successful.”
:lmao: "I've sent boys younger than you to electric chair. Didn't want to do it, but felt I owed it to them"

Nice job. I can't argue with much, but I think Minnesota finishes in the top 5. I agree with your top 4. I thought the conference might be a toss-up at the top, but after looking at the rosters and incoming recruiting classes, Indiana is by far the favorite with Michigan clearly ahead of MSU and OSU. It doesn't appear that Matta is going to grab any recruits this year barring a last second surprise. He's going to bank the scholarships and load up next year. Based on what I've read, the 2013 class is pretty loaded so I can't really blame him.

I think it's a solid plan to go strong in '13...they've been so young the past couple years, especially last year. We only got glimpses of the '11 class and we'll likely only lose Thomas after next season. I liked what I saw from Amir and Thompson. Hopefully Matta kept Ross happy and he doesn't bolt. The loss of Sibert to Dayton seems minimal to me, I never thought he developed at all (although Craft being relied upon so much could have stunted him, and the emergence of Lenzelle from that class) and Shannon Scott should be able to move right into a bigger role. I'm hoping Matta plays a deeper team ALL YEAR LONG, maybe with more pressing too because they might have the horses to do it.CraftLenzelleThompsonThomasAmir----ScottRossRavenel

Pick it up right back off where we started last year with the Big Ten/ACC Challenge predictions...

Iowa at Virginia Tech - Virginia Tech

Minnesota at Florida State - Minnesota

NC State at Michigan - Michigan

Nebraska at Wake Forest - Wake Forest

Maryland at Northwestern - Maryland

North Carolina at Indiana - Indiana

Virginia at Wisconsin - Wisconsin

Purdue at Clemson - Purdue

Michigan State at Miami - Michigan State

Georgia Tech at Illinois - Georgia Tech

Boston College at Penn State - Penn State

Ohio State at Duke - Duke

Big Ten wins, again.

7-5

It might be slightly weaker at the top, but the depth is the best it has been in a long time. OSU is a national title contender (and IMO better than Duke). Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan St. and Purdue are pretty much locks for the tourney. Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Iowa will all be solid teams with the potential to make the tourney. 2-3 of them likely will.
Agree with most of this, except Iowa is not a solid team by any stretch of the imagination. They were blown out by Creighton and Campbell. They may not win a Big Ten game.
After beating Wisconsin twice last year, Indiana, and Michigan (yes, all top 25 teams if you are still going to go based on last year's results like you did with Creighton and Campbell) on their way to an 8-10 season in a rebuilding year.....this statement couldn't be more wrong. Iowa is one of the more underrated teams in the Big Ten...Fran McCaffery finally has HIS team after some coaching changes and I can't wait for the season to start.

All I can say is I am excited. It's not an exaggeration to say the Midwest is the heart of the storm in college basketball this year and, for now, Bloomington Indiana is the epicenter.

It's going to be a hell of a ride.

This will be a bit of a rebuilding year for MSU as Izzo figures out his rotation for a 2013-14 national title run.
Went to the game last night. Even though it was exhibition, Brandon Dawson looked fully healthy and freshman guard Gary Harris looked solid. Can't wait for the season opener vs. UConn in Germany in 2 weeks.

Optimistic for the Gophers chances this season. I know they won't win the conference, but if it all comes together, they should be near the top with Mbakwe back, Rodney Williams hopefully taking another step up, and Dre Hollins looked to have the potential as a game changing point guard, something the Gophers haven't had in a long time.

Holy Christ the NCAA and it's family is a dickmitten. 9 game suspensions for Perea & Jurkin, basically because their AAU coach's ex-wife made donations to IU 20-25 years ago. A total of $185 over 7 years, so now he's considered a "booster", apparently for life.

So any of you who ever bought a bumper sticker for your favorite school, don't go NEAR any prospective recruits, EVER, apparently.

Bucky lost PG Josh Gasser for the year to an ACL tear.
Yeah, Bruesewitz out as well initially. It's hard enough to replace Taylor without an unfortunate injury like that. Bo is nothing if not resourceful though and I think he will find a way.
I really do think George Marshall can play. He may surprise, though he lacks experience obviously. I like Traveon Jackson behind him as well, as a defensive stopper. A little more size with Jackson too, at 6' 2" vs. 5' 11" for Marshall. Overall, they still have some nice pieces in place.

I agree completely. What really gets me is that the coach was also Perea's legal guardian after he moved to the US. That is like saying anyone who has bought $25 dollars worth of college merchandise has voided their kid's (born or unborn) eligibility for an athletic scholarship at that school, forever. These kids were not even born yet when the controversial bumper stickers were being sold. Great work NCAA.

I didn't think the NCAA could top bagel-gate. I was wrong. :lmao:

Guess they should have just gotten cozy with an agent like WWW instead. That seems to be A-OK.
