With all the declarations out of the way, I took a quick look at how I see the Big Ten shaping up next year. This could be the best year of Big Ten basketball in quite some time.
1. Indiana Hoosiers – The Hoosiers return their entire starting 5 from last season, and add one of the nation’s top 2-3 recruiting classes to the mix. Both Cody Zeller and Christian Watford are talented enough to be Big Ten Player of the Year candidates, and I expect freshman PG Yogi Ferrell to challenge for Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Assembly Hall is the best home court advantage in the conference and I doubt they lose more than 2 games there all year. They are the most talented team in the conference on paper, so barring something unforeseen they should be in contention for the title.
Projected Seed - 1
2. Michigan Wolverines – Had Trey Burke declared for the draft, Michigan would likely be a bubble team. With him, they are contenders for the Big Ten championship again. Tim Hardaway Jr. returns after a bit of a sophomore slump, but he is still a very talented player. Michigan adds the Big Ten’s 2nd best recruiting class, and SF Glenn Robinson III, PF Mitch McGary and SG Nick Stauskas will all play heavy minutes from the start. This will be the most talented roster that John Beilein has ever coached, but it remains to be seen how long it will take for all the new faces to gel.
Projected Seed - 2
3. Michigan State Spartans – There is a bit of uncertainty with MSU right now. As of right now we don’t know how well Brandon Dawson’s knee will heal or if Derrick Nix will be good to go for next season. Even without them MSU is a very deep and talented team though. Gary Harris is in my opinion the best freshman coming into the conference and I would not be surprised to see him lead the team in scoring from day one. Freshman F Matt Costello and G Denzel Valentine also have a good chance to make an impact. As usual, MSU’s trademark will be their tough D.
Projected Seed - 3
4. Ohio State Buckeyes – Getting DeShaun Thomas back was a huge plus for the Buckeyes. He is a likely BTPOY and possibly even NPOY candidate. Aaron Craft is one of the top PG’s in the conference and the best defender. There are enough talented pieces on the roster who will step up into the vacated positions for Ohio St. to be successful. As of right now I view OSU as a slight step back from the top 3 teams, but not by much.
Projected Seed - 4
5. Wisconsin Badgers – Jordan Taylor is a big loss, but if any team is equipped to lose a PG it is Wisconsin. Their offense is not heavily PG centric, so they should be alright without him. They return a lot of talented pieces for next season, and add Sam Dekker, who will provide instant offense to the Badgers right away.
Projected Seed - 4
6. Iowa Hawkeyes – Iowa started out the year very slowly, but by the end of the year they were a much better team. The Hawkeyes have a solid nucleus with Aaron White, Melsahn Basabe, Roy Marble and Zach McCabe. To that core they add one of the Big Ten’s best recruiting classes, highlighted by PG Mike Gesell and C Adam Woodbury. I think McCaffrey is one of the better coaches in the league as well.
Projected Seed - 9
7. Minnesota Golden Gophers – Trevor Mbawke’s return is huge for the Gophers. He is one of the 10 best players in the Big Ten, and having him back makes Minnesota an entirely different team. Andre Hollins emerged as a big time player down the stretch, and Rodney Williams is a really good player as well.
Projected Seed - 10
8. Purdue Boilermakers – Purdue loses its top two players in F Robbie Hummel and PG Lewis Jackson. They have a few solid returning pieces, but lack star power. They have an excellent recruiting class coming in, but I don’t see a single player on the roster for next year who I think will be an All Big Ten caliber player.
Projected Seed - NIT
9. Illinois Fighting Illini – The Illini took a big step towards becoming a better basketball team when they fired Bruce Weber. I am a bit skeptical of new coach John Groce, but I think at the minimum he will be an improvement over Weber. Brandon Paul returns, as does DJ Richardson, so there is some talent to work with.
Projected Seed - NIT
10. Northwestern Wildcats – Northwestern missed out on its best chance to make the tourney last season. With the loss of John Shurna, I can’t really see a way that they will be better this season. That being said, they are enough pieces (namely Drew Crawford) to produce some upsets throughout the year.
Projected Seed - NIT
11. Penn State Nittany Lions – Tim Frazier is one of the best players in the Big Ten, and when combined with Jermaine Marshall, he provides Penn St. with a solid backcourt. The problem is, there isn’t much else there. Frazier will lead them to a few upsets this year, but they are far from tourney contention.
Projected Seed - N/A
12. Nebraska Cornhuskers – Nebraska loses its two best players off of a team that was the leagues worst to begin with. I have a hard time seeing the Cornhuskers win more than 3 conference games this season.
Projected Seed - N/A
