Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (4 Viewers)

I like when the new guys think a win at Minny is a "huge road win"
Sure, it's not Wisconsin, but like UH said, any conference road win is huge, especially this year.

And don't sell your team short.  Minnesota is a solid team.  They've had a rough streak of losing close games, but that tends to even out.

Maryland blew a big lead at home against friggin Nebraska. Any win, especially on the road, is huge for them. Plus, Minnesota sniped them there last year.

Lighten up guys. Sometimes a comment isn't a slight that needs to be defended. It was more of a dig at our Minnesota friends.

And that's good shtick, confusing me for a Gopher fan.

Indiana looks like Crean's first couple year teams. Going to be ugly the rest of the way.

PG in particular is really bad Newkirk can't shoot and doesn't really bring anything to the table.

Only a couple of legit scoring options on the whole team right now.

Nice night for Yogi Ferrell on the Mavs last night.  Glad to see him doing well, even though he tortured Terps fans for the past couple years.  Maybe he can turn the 10 day contract into an NBA career.

My Daughter was at IU for Yogi's freshman year...  she told me to watch him and she was right. He developed nicely as a Hoosier. Best of luck to him.

Jackson is out of his mind.  Huerter just does everything.  Overall, some sloppiness, but once again, a conference road win is gold.

Sparty up by 6 over the huskers at the half... in Lincoln.

I'm still waiting for Izzo to flip the switch. Maybe this is the year he doesn't have one.

Sparty with the double digit road win.

Izzo was not a good mood with his team all night, but I thought the team fought well and played well all game last night, especially on the road.  Win is a win. Still haven't figured out this team yet, but Miles and Cass seem to be coming into their own.

GO GREEN

Big game in College Park tomorrow.  I'd like to think Purdue has a good shot, but they are too inconsistent.  Especially on the road.  Played a great game in East Lansing, then shat themselves in Lincoln.  Then come home and dismantle Northwestern.  Gonna be tough for them to keep the Terp guards out of the lane.  Maryland by 5-6.

I have a feeling foul trouble may be a large factor.  If Haas and Swanigan can get the Terps bigs in trouble, that could be problematic for Maryland.  Similarly, if Cowan and Trimble can draw some fouls in the lane on Purdue's bigs, Boilers' defense could suffer.

Haas actually does pretty well avoiding fouls.  Most of his are of the "big man bumps little man" variety or where he temporarily loses control of one of his giant limbs.  He doesn't block many shots but does challenge/alter quite a few.  Swanigan plays D like Kevin Love.  Decent manning up on the block, doesn't challenge shots, mostly interested in getting rebounds.

Dodd will have more fouls than minutes-played.

Oof.  Really thought the floater from Trimble with thirteen seconds would go in.  Terps had it for the taking and let it slip away.

As usual, I was wrong - Dodd played really well (for him). Even big Cek did.

Maryland could NOT make a lay up or short jumper.

That was a helluva resume win for Purdue. I like them (well, not so much today) - they are tough and nasty. They could have folded up and didn't.

Gophers halt a 5 game skid at ILL. They needed one bad.

On the other hand, how does ILL not have more wins? They're athletic and they have a few skilled bigs. They "look" like a decent team. Surprised they're on loss streak but such is the B1G.

I don't know. I've only seen a couple of their games but I agree - they seem to have the pieces to be better than their record.

I don't know it its a B1G point of emphasis but I am heartened by what I perceive to be an increase in the number of times players are called for traveling.

I hope so. It's awful on the college level. But some of the pump fake-drive calls are questionable.

Regardless, it's a dogfight in Madison today. Stupid Hoosiers sticking around. Bucky not shooting very well.

I have only watched Indy like 4 or so games this year. He seems like a real fireball though. Lots of energy.

Agree on the knees though
He's a good player just a bit of a baby and looks like Frankenstein out there.

Hoosiers offense is a shell of what they started with with no Blackmon or OG, lost season for them.

I get the same feeling of him. If he could put it all together he could be a conference player of the year type candidate

Hate to say it but I think you guys need a new philosophy at head coach. Crean seems to be more of a mid major type of guy.

Crean isn't winning any popularity contest in Bloomington I'd guess. Give him a pass this year but he does get overwhelmed in big games IMO. They have had great teams and IIRC they haven't gotten past the sweet 16.

Only so many really great coaches out there, he's not one of them.

Welp, good game anyway. I thought it would be a blow out but the Hoosiers hung tough

That was pathetic.  There is nothing more infuriating than playing good defense for 30 seconds then giving up an offensive rebound, and the Terps seem to do it more than anyone.  Trimble is really not playing well lately.  I suppose the good news is he's going to end up coming back for his senior year at this rate.

There was one particular stretch in the second half where Maryland forced two turnovers in a row, yet in the three possessions ended up even.  Maryland went 2 for 4 at the line and missed a layup, while Penn St. turned it over twice and went 2 for 2 at the line.  Speaking of free throws, 17 of 27 is not acceptable, obviously.

I also think that Cowan has regressed from earlier in the year.  Given that he and Brantley each had 23 minutes tonight, Turgeon may feel the same way.  I really wonder what's going on with Wiley.  Is he still hurt?  If he's healthy, I'm surprised he gets so few minutes.  The rumor is that he was set to start at SG over Sulaimon last year until his knee injury.  If he's hurt, why is he playing once every three games?

Bryant seems to have regressed a bit from his Freshman season.  His play has been very erratic this year to say the least, and at times it's hard to believe he is the same player that Kentucky had no answer for during the tournament last year.

I still have no idea how good this Badgers team is.  On paper, they have all the makings of a tough out in the NCAA tournament:  a veteran team, solid defense, good guard play, talented bigs, won't beat themselves, etc.  But they seem to be getting sucked into a bunch of tight games lately.  They've managed to pull them out which is good but they don't have a huge margin of error against tough competition.

ETA:  Nebraska made some great plays down the stretch.
