Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

Cardiac Terps again!  For any who didn't watch, OK St had a game winner go in, but it was released maybe two tenths of a second after the horn sounded.

Terps are now 4-1 in games where they've trailed by 10+ in the second half, but long term, that trend can't continue (can it?).  Also, shooting 4-22 from deep isn't going to win conference games.  They need to get to at least 35% from deep as a team.
For the life of me I can't figure out why the Terps can't shoot the 3.  Isn't that something that extra work can improve?  You'd think these guys would be knocking down jumpers 20 hours/day since that could be their lifeline to the NBA.

Here comes conference play!

Current KenPom rankings:

  1. Wisconsin
  2. Purdue
  3. Indiana
  4. Michigan
  5. Ohio St.
  6. Northwestern
  7. Minnesota
  8. Michigan St.
  9. Maryland
  10. Illinois
  11. Iowa
  12. Nebraska
  13. Penn St.
  14. Rutgers
Is this the year for the Wildcats? They need Pardon back at center before conference play. 5 of first 7 on road, but alot of winnable games early. Way more talent and athleticism on this team than ever before, play tenacious D, and can stroke it from 3. Go Cats.

I know they've a good record - have they beaten anyone good? Any good wins? I haven't been following closely.

Be nice if they could finally make the tournament.

I'm excited about the Badgers going into the conference schedule.  They've got an experienced team with good balance and seem a bit less excruciating to watch under Gard than Bo.  I didn't see the UNC game though.

Here I was excited about Andy Van Vliet and Bevin Pritzl but it's Dmitrik Trice (Travis' little brother) that is going to be a star.  Heck of a start for this freshman.
Yes, agreed. Trice is the real deal. Van Vliet and Pritz have barely seen the court, which surprised me a bit. Especially Pritzl, since they tried hard to play him last season before he was shelved with the foot injury. Maybe it'll take him a bit to work back into the flow on the court.

There's no question who the better team was that game, but the Badgers typically improve quite a bit between now and March, as I suppose many teams do. I was at the Marquette game a couple weeks back and enjoyed myself immensely. Although I never considered Marquette a rival while in school, as a Milwaukee resident its incredibly satisfying to stroll through the courtside club at the BC in badgers gear, then sit in the good seats among the snooty Marquette alumni while the Badgers are making a 14-0 run to start the second half. Happ has really developed a nice game and they have enough good pieces that they can overcome an off night by one of the stars. Agree the team is more fun to watch, although I always loved Bo's style as well.

My daughter is a Marquette grad so the in-state rivalry game is a good excuse for drinking in the morning.   The Badgers really turned it on in the second half of that game.  I'm afraid their poor FT% will come back to burn them at some point but hopefully that'll happen vs Rutgers rather than in a tournament game.

I know it's the BIG thread but Marquette has generally looked good in non-conf play.  They move the ball well and can shoot although front court depth is a problem.  We'll see if the shooting holds up when the competition level is stepped up.

That makes me happy to hear. Mostly because I'm a Michigan grad.

After the tournament in NYC - where M really took it to both Marquette and SMU - I thought M was really, really good. Then they threw up a goose egg at South Carolina. That and the at UCLA loss were understandable. The one that hurts is blowing the 15 point lead at home versus VaTech.

Having said that, they seem pretty good. Obviously its still really early but DJ Wilson has come out of nowhere to give M a 6'10" athletic, rebounding 4. For the first time ever under Beilien, M actually has length. And, as with all Beilein teams, they can shoot. Sometimes incredibly so (see first half v UCLA).

I think a top 4 Big Ten finish is realistic - but who knows? Maybe they will go 10-8. That'd be disappointing.

Michigan's loss to Va Tech hurts Marquette fans too because of the Buzz Williams factor.

I don't know how much to read into non-conf records.  I guess bracketologists have to do something the other ten months of the year but I don't think a team's form in November is going to matter that much in March, except for a handful of bubble teams.  The A beat B and B beat C and strength of schedule stuff are discussion starters but everybody now has 18 conference games plus the conference tournament to prove their worthiness on the court.

Wow. Terrible loss by MN at home to MSU last night. They shot 23 more free throws and outrebounded MSU.

Has MN shot that poorly all year? Just a bad loss.

Last night: Hayes 0-0 from 3 pt range.

That's what it takes to make the Badgers the best in the conference. Hayes has pretty much stopped throwing up 3s since the UNC loss and his play inside is making WIS a very nasty team to deal with.  When they are playing inside-out and the big guys are making an extra pass, they can play with anyone in the country.

Yep. My read on the situation is Hayes fell in love with the three after scouts told him to work on his range. Good for Hayes, bad for Wisconsin. If he continues like this, I like where they are headed. And Iverson is really fun to watch.

Indiana loses at home to Nebraska?

I had to log into ESPN this morning to make sure it wasn't a typo on the crawler last night.

How in the Seven Hells does that happen?

Crean's teams have always been characterized as being wildly inconsistent in terms of both surprising bad and good play, but this year seems to be taking that concept to an entirely new level.  I don't know if Indiana will turn the ball over 20 times against Louisville today or beat them by 20 points; the idea that either could occur is maddening.

I'm still trying to figure out the Frightening Illini's defensive game plan against the Terps the other night. I haven't seen so many perimeter players drive for layups since I played in 8-10 year-old leagues 45 years ago. "By God, you won't make a three on us but have your way with lay ups"?

And they NEVER changed it

Terps had a 12 point lead with just over six minutes to play, but never scored again.  Nebraska switched to a 1-3-1 zone and Maryland couldn't find any open looks.  Didn't help that the officials just decided to stop calling fouls (other than one truly horrid call against Huerter).

Trimble looked especially terrible for the last six minutes.  Repeatedly drove into double and triple teams without a way to pass out.  He also missed an open three with time running down that would have given the Terps the lead.

I guess if you like to see epic collapses
Minnesota beat the Tough Boilermakers at Mackey in OT. Had three players foul out but a lot of different guys stepped up big. PG Mason had 30 with 11 assists. Curry with nice plays down the stretch. Lynch was solid with 5 blocks.

Yes, they should've beat MSU at home. But to come back the next game and win on the road at Purdue for the first time since 2005? Yeah baby. That's a damn good quality win.

It's hard to read Indiana right now, but a win at Bloomington is always great. I'm a homer, but am very impressed with the Badgers. Great balance on this team.

Lots of talent and they play really well together, but...  But.  But sadly, free throw shooting will sink this team in the end.

Under Crean, IU folds like a deck chair when pressed.

Full disclosure: I'm a Terp, wife & daughter are Hoosiers, son is a Hokie.

NO excuse for poor free throw shooting. That's on the coaching staff.
Not in the Badgers case.  Happ and Nigel shoot the most free throws for this team so the percentage is skewed downward.  Nigel's at 65% this year and typically is in the low 70's not great but if he can start shooting it a little better (closer to his norm) the Badgers team percentage doesn't look quite so bad.  Hopefully Happ can figure it out as I know he works hard but he just isn't a very good shooter.

As a double Wisconsin grad with family ties to Marquette, I must admit to some satisfaction from seeing Tom Crean implode. Life is pretty good when Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, Bret Bielema and Crean all suffer humiliating losses within a week.

Meanwhile Buzz Williams has the Hokies in the top 25.

The schadenfreude is satisfying.  Like a plate of fried chicken and all the fixins

Strangely, I don't think there's much ill-feeling toward Buzz among the Marquette alumni. I'm not in touch with that group, but that's my impression just based on running in some of the same circles. Wojo is going to hurt some feelings when he skips town.

Buzz has always been kind of an odd duck.  In retrospect, he wasn't a great fit with the culture and image that the MU program tries to project.  It was always going end badly and Buzz moving to Blacksburg on his terms may have been the best outcome for all concerned.

But he sure can coach.

Nice road win for the Terps today at UM. The 3 F starters all played well, and it was nice to see Dodd have a good game

Nickens was the most surprising, with 4 of 4 from deep.  They're going to need Cekovsky to get healthy, though, as Bender is not good.

Don't look now but the Gophers are 3-1 in conference play. Good win by 10 at home over Ohio St. 12 blocked shots. Freshman Amir Coffey and Akeem Springs off the bench led the team. Tate has 20 for Ohio St.

Their win over Purdue on the road looks even more impressive now that the Boilers wiped the floor clean with the Badgies yesterday.

Man, Wisky just doesn't match up well with Purdue at all. I didn't get to see the game but by all accounts it wasn't pretty.

Goldy has a good chance to steal one against MSU tonight, leading to PSU and Wisky next week. I think by March we'll see a lot of the B1G beating each other up but early on, Minnesota is doing some good things to separate themselves from the pack. I can't believe I just typed that.

Terps managed to edge IU at College Park. Good thing it wasn't at Assembly Hall.
Terps played pretty well last night.  Regardless of Indiana's record, they're still in the top half of the league, and probably better.  I think they'll right the ship.  I'm happy with a win against them here, there, or anywhere.

Dodd was great last night.  Same for Huerter and Jackson.  Really like the trio of freshmen the Terps have.  Curious that Wiley hasn't played in two games, but no mention of an injury.  I thought he was playing decent.

Kill All The Gophers.

Sorry Minny you ran into a buzz saw tonight. That was the most complete game from start to finish we've played all year. Freshman looked fantastic. The throwbacks looked great.  Think were 4-0 wearing those.

Go Green
