Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

Oladipo is going to be on the highlight reel with that last shot, but Jordan Hulls just saved Indiana's season.
I'd put the Watford block right up there. The guy has a 3 inch vertical jump and comes up with that play, loved it.Super ugly game that IU slept walked through until the last 2 minutes. Take the win, but don't play like that against Cuse!
Definitely, Hulls got them back in the game and then Watford won the game. I guess that is where having experienced Seniors in the tournament really pays off.

All I tried to do was call out Barkley for calling the B1G overrated and everyone gets their panties in a bunch!

Not sure how 4 teams ranked in the top 10-15 entering the tournament and making it to the top 16 is overrated but apparently that's not good enough for some posters (and blowhard Barkley) on this board.

Whatever. Enjoying the run so far.

I agree. Barkley is an idiot.

I like Barkley in the NBA studio, but he doesn't care about college basketball and doesn't even try to hide it. Zero effort to actually learn about the teams.

ISU was completely jobbed down the stretch. Still, great trey to win the game.
No. They weren't.
You're not being honest. Craft sliding in under the shooter was just an awful call.
He was there. The only question is if his heel was over the line. If it had been 2 inches further away from the basket, we're not having this discussion.
It looked like the shooter was in the air before he was even set. Plus he was flopping with his upper body with no contact. Refs are so worried about the circle that they aren't watching for movement. Way too many charges in CB.

Tubby Smith fired? Was that expected? Seems like he was doing a pretty solid job there.
Too many years of the February/March collapse. He seems like a good guy, but this was a make or break year. The team showed no leadership, and that lies on the coach.

I thought that Indiana win might have dragged it out for another year, but I'm glad we're on to the next chapter.

Link.

:bye: Tubby.

Reminds me of when Indiana fired their football coach Mallory because he only took them to minor bowl games and not the Rose Bowl. Haven't won a bowl game since.

This is exactly right. Doesn't matter if his foot was on or over the line, you can't slide in once a player is in the air going to the hoop. Should have been a defensive foul.

No idea why they have changed the emphasis on the rule in the past few years, but they are definitely encouraging players to slide in late to try to take that charge.1. For all they are trying to do with these ridiculous rules to make the game safer - see all the stupid discussion about the elbow swinging to clear space - encouraging these players to slide in late seems to be creating more dangerous situations and opportunity for injury.2. Why you want to give the benefit of the doubt to the defensive player is beyond me. Encourage offense. Also, :lmao: at the dude who suggested Tubby was doing a good job at UM. That was about as bad a job of coaching this year as you'll see. As a UW fan I'm sad to see him go.

I don't think people were suggesting Tubby was doing a great job b/c he was fired but he wasn't really bad. He has been to the NCAAT for 3 of his 6 years there. Prior to him getting there, they had been to 1 NCAAT in the previous 7 years. Certainly, the year was a bit of a disappointment with the talent on the roster but I'm not sure what realistic expectations are for a replacement.

As mentioned in my prior posts, I'm not surprised in the slightest that Tubby was fired for taking a team capable of beating IU/MSU and allowing it to collapse. Hopefully that means they will be serious pursuing Shaka Smart, or have confidence that Flip Saunders will take the job. I'm not convinced it was all Tubby though; our team this year, while full of talent, started slow and kicked the ball all over the court. Seems like the players themselves failed to live up tot heir talent consistently.

Rumors I've heard is that the coach is already lined up, which makes me think it is Shaka. There isn't another big name out there that makes sense to have already committed. The other big name is Flip Saunders, but since he's part of the group trying to buy the T-Wolves, I don't think he could have committed already. The problem with this year's team is they have no point guard. Andre Hollins is a great player, but not a natural point guard. The roster composition does fall to Tubby though, and if he had a capable point guard instead of a Maverick Ahamnisi, then the story would be different.

Hard to imagine Shaka taking the Minnesota job after he turned down Illinois. They both come with a lot of the same challenges, but Illinois has a stronger history and better recruiting base.Flip's an interesting one. I remember him from his Pistons days. Excellent with the Xs and Os, but he seemed to be pretty laid back even by NBA standards, and I don't know how well that would translate to the college game.

Especially when Shaka can pretty much get any position in the game. Why would he take UM over UCLA? I'll eat my crow if it happens but I think some fans overrate the attractiveness of their jobs. Right now he is a big fish in a little pond. Why jump for the medium fish in the big pond when he could wait for a job like UCLA or UNC where recruiting practically does itself.

I think this is true, but doesn't explain the team as a whole turning the ball over left and right. This team was all left feet and had more unforced turnovers than any college team I remember watching. A good point guard would definitely help, but he can't handle the ball for everyone.

:goodposting: I would be shocked if he left for UM.

No, but without a true point guard, everyone is handling the ball more than they would otherwise. Dre Hollins had a lot of turnovers, but if he isn't the main ball handler, he'd be touching the ball a lot less. That has a cumulative effect. Maybe the posts aren't affected, because they are going to handle it the same amount as now, but maybe with a true point guard, we run a lot more 4 wing offense. Who knows, but it definitely would have helped the whole offense.

I think those (me included) thinking we have a shot at Shaka are not overvalueing the MN job as much as we are thinking the VCU connection is strong enough.

I would love to see Shaka, Brad Stevens or Flip.
Flip Wilson maybe. Stevens has turned down jobs 10 times better than Minn.
I said I would love it, not that I had a source. That said, even if Teague can't land Shaka again, Flip Saunders is a definite possibility. Many wanted him after Monson was fired when Tubby came in, but he was under contract. Flip bleeds maroon and gold, starred at the U, is a huge booster, still lives in MN and has been attending high profile high school games, the most recent being the State Championship game for Apple Valley with Izzo to see national #2 recruit, Tyus Jones. While Flip has recently been tied to a possible Timberwolves buyout group, nobody in MN will be surprised if he gets the job.

Rumors running rampant on twitter and local radio that Shaka Smart will be in Minneapolis today. No confirmation to post......yet.

That's strange. All day yesterday the reports were that he was signing an extension with VCU.
He also tweeted that two girls sitting behind him at a conference were sexually harassing him... talking about forking his dongle or some such nonsense.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I didn't want to start a new one...

Me and a couple of buddies are making the road trip down to Indy on Friday.. We already have a hotel, and we are planning on scalping tickets.

While we would like to go to both Friday games, our main concern is the Duke/MSU game.

Couple of quick questions.

Can the people leaving (I'm assuming not everybody stays for both games) sell their tickets after the first game? Also, does anybody know

if the Michigan game would be on tv's somewhere inside Lucas Oil Stadium?

Not arguing that info is accurate or inaccurate. Might well be indication of his intent. However, first thought that came to my mind when I read that was "If I were his agent, angling for the best deal possible everywhere, I'd leak this same update about my client."

And, it seems one sided. VCU will "try" to get Smart extended or is "working on it". I'm not going to say I think it will happen but there are too many people here that are plugged in saying that they think something is happening between Smart and Minn. Thats still far from an agreement.

Agreed. It's hard to read too much into anything. The facts we know are (1) VCU is motivated to publicize to alum that they are doing everything in their power to keep Smart, and (2) the agent is motivated to let suitors know he has other options.

VCU's Shaka Smart Agrees to Contract Extension

VCU head coach Shaka Smart has turned down an opportunity to join UCLA, informing them today that he'll be staying with the Rams, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.

Smart has let UCLA know he accepted a contract extension and will be staying in Richmond. VCU is expected to announce formally Smart's contract extension in the next 24 hours. The deal will go through the year 2023 and will pay him approximately $1.5 million per year, up from the $1.2 million he'd been making.

A majority of what Smart asked VCU for was improvements for his staff and program. That includes more salary for his staff and a bevy of things like better meals for players, improved travel for the program and other perks for his staff.

With Smart's name bandied about at job openings at UCLA, USC and Minnesota, his choice to stay at VCU shows his belief that he can win there long term. He's resisted other overtures the past few seasons, including interest from schools like Illinois and North Carolina State.

Smart, 35, got a raise to $1.2 million in guaranteed money after the 2011 season when he led VCU to the Final Four. He's since led the Rams to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances since. No. 5 VCU blew out Akron in its first game before losing to No. 4 Michigan in the Round of 32.

He's also led VCU to another plane off the floor, as the Rams joined the Atlantic 10 this season and could be considered for a spot in the Big East when it grows from its current 10 teams.

Smart and VCU have as defined a style of play as any program in the country. The Rams' "Havoc" up-tempo pressing style has come become intertwined with VCU's image.

Smart has seemingly adopted a philosophy of, "Don't mess with happy," and has reaffirmed his commitment to VCU.
