He apparently received his UW admissions letter this week. Mark Miller tweeted that he was shocked and according to his inside sources he was going to UW and that something must've changed this week. I think that means Under Armor must've upped their offer. Oh well good luck to him.Where did you see this? I don't discount it completely but they've been involved with Maryland for a decent number of years now and this is the first huge recruit Maryland has landed. I bet a lot has to do with the kid seeing how playing with a great PG like Melo will help him in the draft in two years.

That last pass to the MSU shooter should have hit the oblivious MSU dude. It was like an optical illusion. I'll swear til my dying day the ball CURVED in mid-air.
I honestly believe that, had MD won that game, they'd have made the Final Four as MSU did.

It also had to do with Gary. He would never quite give in to what UA could do. While I guess that's admirable, it hurt him in recruiting.

Classic post up game, very skilled scorer from the post but can shoot a bit too. Demarcus Cousins or JD Sullinger type game. Wisconsin fans thought he was in the bag, but for a minor blip on his test scores. I don't think academics were an issue in the end though. Very smart kid, good head, good parents. The one reservation I had from Wisconsin perspective is that Bo's system just isn't well-suited to one-year kids. Even his top recruits Iike Dekker are kids you have the feeling will play 4 years, and his bread/butter are the second tier prospects just under the radar like Hayes, Koenig, Kaminsky.I think that's probably most of the reason. That comment was a little tongue in cheek but it's a little suspicious since Stone's AAU team is sponsored by UA and that's where he ended up. No offense to Maryland but it's not like he passed on a top in state program to go to a Duke or Kentucky. Seems odd he would go halfway across the country to play for a borderline top 20 program. Oh I'm sure UA had a lot to do with it. However, not every single great player can go to Duke and Kentucky plus playing with Melo has got to be desirable to him. I have a feeling that Maryland is back on their way to being a top 2nd tier program (like Wisco). Saw Stone play 5 or 6 games at the U-17 world's last summer. Really solid traditional bulldozer-type big guy. I personally think he's a step below the Okafors and Sullingers of the world (in terms of year 1, first team all american type of impact) but he's still going to be really really good.
I think he's a little better than Caleb Swannigan (who I have a feeling is going to end up at Duke) but its close.
And yeah, I think Underamor had a lot to do with it. Not like Maryland isn't a good program, but when a kid is one of the very few elite guys playing for a UA AAU program (90% of the top guys run on the Nike Circuit with the rest split between UA and Adidas) and just happens to go 1/2 way across the country to their flagship school, its pretty obvious what happened here. (And it happens everywhere with every shoe company, so its not really a big deal).

Man, the more I think about it the less I can forecast what MD's gonna be. I know they'll be good, but #1 or #2?
It's like losing Dez Wells doesn't matter. They have no one player to replace him. They need some combination of Layman & Sulaimon to fill that production.
The inside game should be miles better, though, with Stone & Carter - each of whom could probably lay in a quarantine ward at NIH and still score more than the Terps' bigs did last year.
I still have no feel for what Turgeon's offense is. It looks kind of random to me. And I'm still not sure how good a "game coach" he is. Gary Williams, for all of his faults and all of his stubborness, was one of the best in-game coaches I've ever seen.
If Nickens turns into a consistent scorer, though, watch out and good luck defending this bunch.

Crossing my fingers Michigan can turn it around. Levert needs to be the player we expected last year and hopefully the experience everyone else got with him out will pay off. Last year was a total disaster.
I wonder if that German freshman is ready to play this year. He was an all star in the German pro league last year (not sure what the level of competition is in Germany).
I'm also really worried about recruiting, it seems like we are going to likely miss out on all the big targets: Battle, Leaf, Winston and Bridges. Battle is gone and if we don't get one of those other 3, I will be very concerned.

Would you rather have a coach who can get top talent but may not be the best game-coach and "under-achieves", or a guy who over-coaches his talent?
Obviously, you can have both (or neither) in one package....
The world was different then, but when Lefty was coaching MD he'd get top players only to be out-coached in critical games by Dean Smith and others.
Gary Williams, on the other hand, was such an ### that he couldn't get elite players (plus, he wouldn't play the AAU and one-and-done game). But I think, at one time at least, he held the record for beating the most #1 teams. Maryland fans already had an inferiority complex and Gary fanned those flames. So, when they did well, it was always "Yeah! The Little Guy did it!!!". Maryland only has about 40,000 undergrads
Crean is a terrible X's and O's coach, which for IU is unacceptable. The real problem is the IU program has been so mismanaged since Knight was driven away, they had several opportunities to get some great coaches like Pitino but passed. Crean has helped bring the program back to at least being relevant. But the talent he has had, they have under performed as a team. This year's team is loaded with NBA talent. Should be a top ten team, but will probably struggle to be in the top 20. Not horrible, but The tradition of IU basketball is excellence. A couple of things have me worried about Maryland's preseason hype.
For one, I don't think the loss of Dez Wells is being taken seriously enough. Besides Trimble, Wells was the ONLY Terp who wanted the ball in his hands late in a close game. Melo can't do that all by himself. I'm looking squarely at you, Layman.
Secondly, the won EVERY close game last year (& got torched in most of their losses). That's not sustainable; law of averages says they'll lose some of those in any given year.
That being said, this year's team will bear little resemblance to last year's. Mainly because they'll actually have inside threats to score (to be fair, Cek looked like the light bulb was starting to come on late last year). They also have a real PG to back up Melo, who hit the freshman wall hard down the stretch (and hit the freshman knee courtesy of his own teammate in the NCAAs).
They've got Georgetown and @UNC early. Away B1G games: NW, Wisc, Michigan, MSU, OSU, Nebraska, Minny, Purdue, Indiana. Plus, several rematches in addition to tough one-time BiGers at home.

I figured it would be a down year, especially coming off the championship appearance but damn. 3 freshmen getting regular minutes, with 2 more possibly contributing if they don't redshirt, is interesting. Bo usually doesn't want freshman anywhere near the floor.

Maryland won their opener last night over Mount St Mary's fairly easily.
They get Georgetown Tuesday.
On the bad news front, the Terps lost G Dion Wiley apparently for the season. Besides losing Wiley's talent itself, it also screws with the backcourt rotation and I expect Trimble will be playing 35 minutes a game again.
