He is in a fight with Joe McKnight for the third RB spot. While it is likely that both backs will make the team, one of them will probably not be active on Sundays. I believe McKnight pulled a little ahead with his performance last night, but haven't heard anything from the team yet.
I'm curious what others thought about him last night and week 1. He doesn't look as explosive as I expected. I'm hoping for big things from him, but didn't see a lot to keep those hopes aloft.

He's just going to take a little time - no OTAs have hurt him like nearly every rookie. If McKnight starts fumbling again, Powell will get a shot at that RB3 spot.
He's looked very average. He's running behind a second and third string o-line, but he's also going against second and third string defenses. Joe McKinght has looked quicker, more exploisve and only slightly less powerful.
He should stick as the No. 4 RB though as McKinght is also returning kicks and LT has really looked like age is catching up to him.

That's probably what gives McKnight more value on any given Sunday. Someone has to absorb the role that Brad Smith left behind and the Jets coaches were actually talking about it being McKnight in some interviews. That would make sense.

That somebody is not McKnight. That somebody is Jeremy Kerley. McKnight hasn't looked special returning kicks either. Now, the fact that he CAN in a pinch is good and will, along with a much better preseason, give him the edge at RB3 assuming he protects the ball. I say again, Powell is thinking too much and definitely struggling because the rookies missed out on camp. I think he'll get better as the year progresses but don't write him off because his preseason was subpar. Remember, McKnight looked terrible most of last year. Now all of the sudden, everyone's predicting him to replace LT.
Curious what is the latest on Powell considering how awful Green looks? My interest is for redraft only (12 team/18 roster spots) as players can't be kept if not originally drafted (I took Vereen instead as my last pick).
I know he was highlighted on the Week 3 waiver list and in the preseason but wonder what other insight might be out there.
Yep, inactive both weeks in favor of Joe McKnight as the #3 RB.
Still can't help but feel that if Greene goes down or gets benched, Powell could leapfrog the pack, because he's a better inside runner than LT is now or McKnight has ever been. Those two are the better receiving / pass-blocking options, by far, which would limit the upside on Powell.
The Jets are winning now without running the ball effectively (or at all in the case of week 1), so this isn't likely to happen anytime soon, but I could see the Jets rolling with a Powell - McKnight 1-2 punch before the end of the year. Still hard to bank on it in redraft. I'd take a wait and see approach with only 18 roster spots.
