Cadilac ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK

ugh. ear poison.
Everyone likes different things. That vocal is there for a specific reason though in the story the song tells.
I like some of his songs, but there's a lot of vomit too. To each their own. "Big Shot" makes me stabby. The theme to Bosom Buddies is decent.
You just like seeing Tom Hanks in a dress.
And Hanks wasn't even the cute one.

I took my wife to his first show of this "once a month in perpetuity" tour back in January. He was great, but the crowd sucked. I understand it's not a traditional show where the performer/band is running all around the stage, but seemingly 95% of the non-floor crowd was sitting the whole time. Who sits at a concert? Two guys got kicked out of my section for standing too often because the people around them were complaining. I happened to see one of the guys after the show and security actually found him a place where he could stand and watch, but it was really weak.
My wife and I saw him back in '89/'90 (Stormfront Tour, "We Didn't Start the Fire") at the Philly Spectrum. We scalped tickets in the parking lot and its the one time I didn't look closely at them before buying. Running late, show was starting... Turns out 1 was for lower level, the other was for 2nd level. Figured no problem, everyone will be standing anyway so we go to the lower level seat, standing for a few minutes, Joel comes on and starts and eveyone sits. Couldn't believe it. So my wife spent the show sitting on my lap and no one bothered us.

Anyway, he's a great entertainer and I would have loved to see the Joel/John tour. Think I'll put on a '77 show from Nassau Coliseum. My Google Play thumbnail photo of him looks like Rick from Pawn Stars, lol.

Billy Joel puts on a great concert and he is one of my favorites.

But as far as being one of the all time great songwriters, not so sure. There are many people I would personally rank above him from the New York area alone: Paul Simon and Springsteen for example, both are better songwriters IMO

Probably based on how you judge a songwriter if it is by the success they have 100 million albums sold is pretty good.

He's not in my top 7 but he's written some good ones.

I like his stuff. I don't where he'd rate as that's a complex question I would have to put some thought into.

Can you read sheet music? That'd be the first question. If you can or you can learn quickly, you can learn a Joel song at a slower pace but if you just stick to that song, you should be able to perfect it. Practice it over and over and over.

(I would suggest starting with a song in C major, i.e. NY State of Mind... C = no sharps or flats, white keys only).

I've played for 20 years so for me, it still takes a week using sheet music to get it perfect. For simpler songs, I just need what key it's in or a lead sheet and can work it out but would take longer.

Download Sheet Music Direct for your iPad and buy the NY State... Music for a few bucks and give it a whirl.

There's 2 other cheats you could use...

Look for a tutorial on YouTube and just memorize the keys without ever cracking open sheet music (I do this on guitar all the time if I just want to learn a quick song).

Learn to play all the chords in your LEFT hand and most sheet music will give you what chord each bar is in. That allows you to ignore the bass clef/left hand completely and just play the melody in the right hand. Over time you can arpegiate the chords in the left to make it more lively sounding. Rarely do I ever look at the bass clef for most pop/rock music, I play the chords in different ways with left hand and follow the treble clef only.

Anyway, this is boring as all hell and don't want to hijack. If it seems intimidating, just YouTube the lesson. If you don't find one on YouTube, I could make one and upload it for you pretty easily.

GL!

Based on that standard we might have to rank Beyonce as one of the greatest songwriters ever. For me she's not. It's pretty subjective I suppose. Personally for modern songwriting I've got:

1. Dylan

2. Paul Simon

3. Neil Young

4. Bruce Springsteen

Don't know where Billy Joel belongs, but farther down the list for sure.

You're not blown away by the sophisticated musings of Uptown Girl or the poetry of We Didn't Start the Fire?

You can probably play a good 50% of his song with a chord chart and feel the rest if you have any musicial ability at all fairly quickly. There really are only a few of his songs that you need to be proficient at the piano to have to deal with. Like Angry Young Man for example. But, for a taste - check out the piano music to I go Extremes, My Life and Goodnight Siagon. Those three songs give you a sense of the basics of his piano playing in songs that you can either just play the chord chart and improvise throughout or actually play whats written - and either way they are fairly simple.

Reading music is entirely overrated for most modern music. The base of any song is usually 4-5 chords in a usual progression and a minor thrown in there somewhere for a turn or tension. If you play the guitar you probably know that already. And you have to remember this when playing the piano - there are three different ways to play a song on the keys when you read full sheet music - there is the full composition meaning playing the base, the chords and the melody (and the melody is usually not something that any instrument plays because that is what is sung) there is the lead sheet way of doing it which is the melody superimposed on a chord chart so you can play the base chords and use the melody when you want or there is the actual real part the piano plays - and you would be surprised what the piano actually plays in a lot of his songs. Mostly its the root chords back and forth with only melodic notes to connect them.

Never thought about it to be able to debate it now. My initial instinct though is to say that Paul Simon... you are probably right. Springsteen not a chance in hell. Don't get me wrong I'm from Jersey and so my DNA is hardwired to like Bruce and I do. But as a songwriter Bruce isn't close to Billy in my opinion. I know critics love Bruce a hell of a lot more than they ever will love Billy, which is a shame. In the end, both did a great deal with music for blue collar music lovers in their time. I don't think Bruce's stuff has aged well though. To me. Humble opinion. I still like it, but continuing a theme I started here regarding XM - I would never spend the day listening to an all Bruce station. I'd have to turn it off after awhile.

How about Burt Bacharach? I think you may be stunned how many songs he wrote you know by heart and likely sing along with when they come on. Obviously once we get into writers it gets real subjective. And some will always pull a couple of songs out of the context of the album they were on and point/laugh. But there are writers you have likely never heard of( I assume you heard of Burt) that have written a ton of great music. And not all of them were the performers of those songs. So that's why i said this is a much more complex question than some realize and it takes some real thought.

Bacharach is a great songwriter but he's never been a lyricist. He's collaborated with others (most notably Hal David) on the words.

I never get the hate for Uptown Girl. Throughout much of his albums he paid tribute to the music he listened to growing up. That song was a tribute to Frankie Vallie and that type of modern doowop sound. In that it was a very good song.

And for the guys in the audience, the lyrics are about two women in his life at the time - Elle MacPherson and Christy Brinkley. I mean, give the man some credit for pulling both of them.

As for WDSTF - he is the first one to admit that musically its stupid. But the lyrics and the history lesson in them are pretty cool the first couple times you hear it.

Huge fan of Burt. And of Carole King. And Neil Diamond. I love them all, but I also group them together as professional songwriters, closer to Irving Berlin than to Dylan or Springsteen. Which is no insult. But not quite in my fist tier.

Also want to add that, among the younger generation of popular songwriters, P!nk is the one who stands out to me. She is very very talented.

Carole King is also a performer as is Neil of course.

I've been playing guitar for 30 years and cannot play a single chord on the piano. It just feels so awkward. I tried learning Werewolves of London. Three simple chords and I felt like a Parkinson's patient.

So I was interested in seeing Billy do Highway to Hell. I was hoping for some unique rendition but it seems that he just brings out some guy to sing while he plays guitar?

Hitting the concert on 11/25...

Anyone that has a chance to go, I highly recommend. The show from the summer was great and I anticipate more of the same.

Pro tip:

https://www.stubhub.com/billy-joel-tickets/billy-joel-new-york-madison-square-garden-11-25-2014-4466716/

Buy the tickets around 4 or 5 pm the day of the concert on Stubhub, they'll be half what they are today as sellers obviously become desperate. The seats in Section B will be had for about $300 a seat and in sections A & C for about $200...

Hundreds of dollars to see Billy Joel?? I am a long time fan, seen him ten times or so and can not even fathom dropping that kind of buck for his show. Is that what concerts run now? Guess I am spoiled by Phish playing 3 hours at $50 ticket prices. That's more my speed, moneywise. Yikes.

Mentioned in another thread, saw him last weekend and it was a great show. Dude is 65 and his voice sounds amazing. Also whatever issues he had with booze/depression were not apparent at all. He was funny, engaging and clearly loves performing. Go see him if you have a chance.

Saw Billy several times live in his mid 80's heyday.

Nylon Curtain Tour

Innocent Man Tour

The Bridge Tour

Storm Front Tour

River of Dreams Tour (94 I believe)

And I saw the very first tour he did with Elton John (in Joe Robbie Stadium) which was amazing.

Then I saw him right before he retired to classical and what not and he was so burnt out by that tour and sounded old and done. So I have not seen him since. He came down here this year and I heard it was a good show.

I love his stuff up to The Nylon Curtain. Incredible music in his early days. After The Nylon Curtain he jumped the shark and wanted to be more of a rock star than a piano man. Had some decent stuff on those records following Nylon Curtain but spotty at best.

Great to hear his voice is in fine form again. Like I said. The last time I saw him in the early 2000's he looked and sounded done.

Saw him twice last year, both fantastic shows... Good enough that I'm going back for a third.

Funny, looking this thread over again - XM did it again.  There was a new Billy Joel Station.  XM18.  It was awesome.  IT just ended it's run and now has been replaced with Miami Beach dance music.

I really would like to know who runs this company.

Not sure your point? It was billed a limited run channel from the beginning.

Who keeps their word these days?  I need honesty from places like my lawyer, my doctor, my representative in Congress and my wife.  Instead I get it from XM.  The terrorists won.

Miami Sound Machine?

It was billed a temporary run channel but should be permanent.

My s/o won't turn it off when the Billy Joel channel. I usually rely on her for new music knowledge at music trivia knight but she's been useless for 2 months because she won't even change the dial.

I too enjoy it (but still like a variety)

Has anyone recently seen Billy Joel in concert?

I ask because I have the opportunity to see him on Friday at Wrigley Field. I have never seen him before. I have seen Paul McCartney and Springsteen at Wrigley Field, and they were both excellent shows. Good sound, good sightlines. The stage for both shows was in deep centerfield. I assume it will be the same for Billy.

I plan on getting tickets on the field--not because of proximity to the stage, but because I like the aesthetic of walking on the diamond, the outfield grass. I have heard that Billy sits on one end of the stage and never moves, so I will avoid paying the upcharge of center seating.

I would be interested to hear about the vibe of one of his concerts. I have heard that he likes to talk in between songs.

I have also heard that one of the big stresses he has is playing in a brand new venue. It really makes him anxious and nervous to learn a new building. Conversely, when he finds a venue that makes him comfortable and relaxed, he returns as often as possible. This will be his sixth appearance at Wrigley Field, and fourth year in a row. So, obviously he will be up for the show.

I saw him at the new Braves stadium in April, great show.

People go ape#### over shows at Wrigley. If he's there for a fourth year in a row, obviously he likes playing there. No brainer imo. See him before he croaks.

We saw him at Madison Square Garden in May. First time seeing him in concert and it was great. There were 4-5 songs where he named 2 and let the audience choose which one he would do. He talked a little bit between songs but nothing excessive.

He was in the middle of the stage and there was only one song where he moved around - played guitar (don't remember what song it was).

I would definitely go see him at Wrigley.

Saw him two years ago at Ravens stadium.  I hate stadium shows but he was good.  I mean, he doesn't blow you away but  he sounds like Billy Joel live, is engaging, seems to enjoy performing, and he certainly has an impressive song catalog.
