double dribble ever so closely, in large part because I also enjoyed ice hockey. Their was no other basketball game close to double dribble.

Double Dribble and it shouldn't be close. Blades of Steel was OK but paled in comparison to Nintendo thin guy / medium guy / fat guy Ice Hockey and the NHL SEGA hockey franchise.

very close, but id have to give it to blades of steel because of the fighting. double dribble had the cool slow mo dunk going for it though

This is like making someone choose between their children...

Both are amazing games, especially for their time. I'll add that I went with Blades of Steel simply because Double Dribble had the near-automatic 3-point spot that kind of ruined game play some.

DD pissed me off a bunch when I played it. I forgot why. Thinking there was some level of the computer going into an "F You you're losing at all costs" mode like the early Madden games.

I'll take Blades of Steel of these two.

It would have been a tougher choice for me if it was Super Basketball (also from Konami) instead.

Pretty sure Super Basketbsll wasn't for the NES.

Hoops was another good one but I can't fathom how anyone could rank another basketball game on the NES above Tecmo NBA Basketball. It even had Jordan.

I didn't even know this existed...The only branded basketball game I ever played was Jordan vs. Bird. While not a full 5-on-5 game, it had some pretty sweet mini-games. The dunk competition was awesome.
I remember playing the prequel to this one on my Apple ][e!!

I remember playing both! I  the Apple IIe. Hard Hat Mack, Blade of Blackpool, and most importantly, Hardball!

Remember those (wretchedly bad) EA sports Bulls Lakers and the like? God those games were more simulation then actual playing.

I loved me some Hardball!

Also was deeply in love with Microleague Baseball (though it was more simulation than playing)

The biggest thing on DD playing head to head there was a huge advantage for player 2. Moving right to left the 3 ball was a lot easier to shoot.

EA one-on-one with Bird was a staple in my household way back when. Bought a computer card and joystick just for it. A long way since then.
