LISTS DUE JANUARY 25!!!

OK, here we go. As those of you in Zegras's latest thread know, our next Middle-aged Dummies countdown will be theme-based.

As usual, you'll choose 31 songs to represent your personal countdown, and I'll post everyone's selections every couple of days, starting with #31, along with accompanying playlists.

In the third post, I'll list the participants and themes I have already. Please let me know if you have any additions and/or corrections.

Q. What are the rules for acceptable themes?
A. There are no rules.
Q. My theme, my choice?
A. Your theme, your choice.
Q. Are theme-related puns acceptable?
A. It would theme so.
Q. When is this due?
A. Sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. I'll gauge the deadline based on feedback and will post again and update this post when we have a firm deadline. In the meantime, let me know what works for you as a deadline.
Q. Is there a particular format in which you would like my list to be submitted?
A. HELLLLLLLLL YESSSSSSSSS. See below.

Please PM me your lists:
- with your 31 pointer (i.e., your #1 choice) at the top of your list, and in descending order from there
- in the format Song Title - Artist
- with a link, if you'd like it in included in my posts or want a particular version. If you don't include a link, our playlist compiler* will grab whichever version they'd like.

*Speaking of which, who is doing it for this countdown? Hawks64 has generally done these in the past (sometimes with assists from simey or KP), but I haven't seen him around in a while. Volunteers?

Some participants from prior M-aD countdowns who haven't committed to this one, but could be interested? This might be less intimidating than the Zegras countdowns since you don't have to listen to a full catalog from an artist. We'd love to see you!

If I am given a list of songs I can make the Spotify playlists.

Particularly my Todd-related list…

I haven't settled on a theme and probably won't nail anything down until (well?) after the current M-AD is done. As it is, it'll probably be Tuesday before I can listen to the #1s there. That said, put me tentatively in, and I'll try to figure it out as I go along. So, you know, business as usual ;).

One idea that I keep coming back to is a top 31 from the 4 rounds of M-AD artist countdowns. Minimum restrictions for me would be one song per poster (per artist? Too easy!), thus favoring the 27 (other) people that have done at least 3 artists. Possible more shenanigans with that, but that definitely depends on my free time.

Here is what I said about my selection of an Afrobeat theme in the other MAD thread: “I will primarily draw from musicians from Nigeria and the high-life of Ghana, but I will take a broad definition of Afrobeat to also include some Zamrock, Cameroon, and Kenya, where fusion of traditional African music with American funk/rock/jazz. I won’t include Niger/Tuareg music, as I view that as its own thing with some middle eastern fusion. I may list some artists more than once, but will try to spread out over a good mix of artists, as thought would be good to highlight some artists that I would never get to a 31 on a separate artist MAD list.”

As Krista was asking for feedback on deadline (and, hey, I read her post), 2-3 weeks should work for me. I’ve got a rough list of music related to the theme that I’ve collected over the years that mostly just need to reduce down to 31 and rank. I’ve been spending most of my listening lately on the MAD artist playlists, so I haven’t focused on this one yet, but will turn to it after the #1s are released.

So I’ve only done @Zegras11 MAD countdowns so far. Do these work the same where the #31s are released at one time along with a playlist and then we talk about our selections (if we choose)?

Yes, the Zegras ones work the same way as these do!

ETA: I should admit that when I did my first three, I posted a new list every day, but by the fourth I slowed down because I saw that Zegras's slower pace worked better.

World’s Worst Superheroes

Here’s how I plan on writing up my inept heroes each round. I am limiting myself to one song per artist since my list was so long (still not trimmed down to 31 yet). Rankings are based partially on the song, but mostly on the (hopefully) interesting/funny things I can think up for these useless superheroes.

This example would for sure be in my top 31, but I have another, better hero from this band.

WORKING MAN
Artist
- Rush

Strengths - responsible, dedicated, has decent credit and company-subsidized healthcare

Weaknesses - Never available when you need him, if he’s around at all he’s asleep on the couch after working his third shift of the day

There Goes My Hero
Situation: while at the mall, your buddy gets caught shoplifting and you’re both now locked in a holding cell by the mall cops.

You: Working Man, I need your help! Johnny got busted trying to steal a bottle of lotion for his girlfriend at Bath & Body Works. It was Japanese Cherry Blossom - it smells nice. Can you please come pick us up??

Working Man: Sorry, kiddo. I just started my second shift at the Amazon warehouse, you know, PUTTING FOOD ON THE TABLE! You’re just going to have to figure this out for yourself, Champ.

Mall cop: Wah, wah!

This one is going to be great. Love these write-ups.

REALLY looking forward to this one.

31 SONGS BY 31 ARTISTS NOT ON SHUKE'S 1300+ COUNTDOWN

I just thought this was funny and a nod to anther FFA music geek. He digs deep, and I like seeing what he puts in the thread. As I frustratingly found when I was putting the playlist together - we swim in similar music circles as well. Most of what he knocked off my list were female rockers. From Ratboys to boygenius to Scrawl to The Beths (those last two really hurt). I think 8 songs fall into this type of artist. Our other circle was 70s rock. I saw Sabbath, King Crimson, Little Feat, Uriah Heep, and many others that I have been digging into. I belive 7-8 are 70s rock or newer bands that sound like 70s rock. Maybe a bit more metal than I saw on the list, but I think these are bands that even people who typically don't wade in those waters might still like. On a similar note, we have 4 hip hop songs. Again, artists I think even listeners who don't like the genre might like a bit of. After that, it is a weird mix of songs ranging from reggae to 70s folk to 90s rock to 00s prog.

The other running theme will be that these are all artists I can recommend full albums for, and in most cases multiple albums. These are artists that I have been stumbling on and slowly making playlists for as I do some deep dives and as I try to figure out what I like in genres like reggae or punk that I generally avoid or think I don't like. Scanning the playlist, the top 22 have enough material and many albums I seem to like. The top 12 would be bands that I feel the strongest pull towards now (most just happen to not be on Shuke's list!), a few I have a completed playlist for, and the top five are basically the 5 bands I should be doing a MAD31 for.

in the spirit of what I think @shuke is going for with his adventure, I didn't worry about what my favorite song was for the countdown. Maybe only 1 of the songs is my favorite by an artist. All are still great songs, I just went for funny song titles or songs that stuck out from albums I wouldn't have gotten to. This will be more about a fun intro song and recommendations for some great albums if you liked that song. Here are a handful of songs for examples of what I was going for but either got knocked out as I looked at the list or I crossed off because maybe I had mentioned them before or taken that song by them before. :nerd:

**disclaimer: I tried my best and maybe and honest pass through the spreadsheet. The theme is not a declaration of accuracy.

These two in particular are doozies, even if Greta is clearly ripping off Led Zep’s “The Rover”.
Soul Asylum was a bit of a late add to the playlist, and I didn't have time to really get into them. When I looked at the albums, I remember having Hang Time and And the Horse They Rode in On. They were cut because I couldn't talk about them as much as the other 31 yet. Greta was a similar cut. I remember liking the album, but realized I hadn't gotten to anything else. Plus I took this or something else in another adventure. Also, I thought people were more likely to have heard them and that song vs. what I kept so :nerd: cut.

There's no Soul Asylum in the shuke thread?
Read the disclaimer!!
I don't read your posts.

As I explained to KP in my thread, for a lot of bands just because they aren't there yet doesn't mean they won't be.

Except for Greta Van Fleet. They've been on my "maybe" list for quite some time and I have a couple songs flagged (Highway Tune, Flower Power), but as I've explained, at this point I'm only adding songs/artists that I would add to my Spotify liked playlist. And every time I hear a Greta Van Fleet song, after about 20 seconds I find myself saying "I'd rather just be listening to Zeppelin right now".
