@zamboni I just got around to your list. I just wanted to comment from one Beach Boys fan to another.
Simply put, I loved it, man. My knowledge about the Beach Boys' catalog comes almost entirely from the '62-'67 era, so the later songs (including the SMiLE Sessions songs that got fleshed out later) were welcome additions to me because I haven't even ever sat and listened to them totally attentively (which is why I wouldn't have volunteered to do this immediately upon MADs inception). So this is an awesome job, IMO.
I had one album rated as my favorite for the current album countdown, but that changes every day and it would be impossible to read too much into the choice. You have one song from it, which isn't a knock on you (nor I think on me) at all—it just is what it is. I chose it because it's their turn from a surf/car band into a band that was more introspective lyrically and adventurous musically.
Your inspired choices of "Don't Worry, Baby" and "In My Room" might have totally escaped me if I were doing the list, and that would have been a shame. They are such beautiful (and in one case aching) love songs that are sung and are longing for a particular kind of peace and emotional state you get the feeling Brian Wilson was chasing for most of his life, which is tragic. But you hit upon the Beach Boys' true essence in choosing them. Your choice of those songs really is inspired. Great job including them, brother.
And that's really it. I'm listening to your list as we speak. I'd do my top thirty-one, but it wouldn't be complete without a full knowledge of the entire catalog, and it's sort of jerky to usurp someone's thoughtfully done list. But if I may, I would recommend one song that is one of the few that has left me in this weird pose I get every so often. It's when I get to listening to music alone in my car, and there's this sort of pose that I get when I'm totally moved now that I think about myself in retrospect. (Sorry for that.) Anyway, I'll sit there in the driver seat with my left leg out of the driver's side, on the ground—while the right leg is in the car, bracing myself on both ground and machine while I listen to the music. It's generally when I have to be somewhere but am almost emotionally stuck by the music. In this case, it's this track that did it for me. I hope you enjoy!
