I only considered things released under the Pearl Jam name. Hunger Strike would have made my top 31 without that restriction.

I like Spin the Black Circle, but I feel about it the same way Shuke feels about Greta Van Fleet vs Led Zeppelin. It sounds so much like Husker Du that I’d rather listen to the real thing.

Marr #1 / Solo #1 - Johnny Marr - "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out (Live)" (2015)

It's cheating a little to pick Johnny covering a Smiths song but my countdown format required a solo number at #1 and "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is one of the best songs he's ever written. It's a Smiths' anthem that perfectly melds Johnny's melodicism with Mozza's melodrama. As usual, Johnny wrote the tune first, cheekily stealing the guitar intro from The Stones cover of "Hitch Hike". Other than that, Marr's guitar work is on the original recording is extremely understated even for him; he seems more interested in emulating the strings and flute parts on his synthesizers. The guitar is a bit more forward on the live recording but his solo is more tidy than flashy.

Morrissey worked the song into his setlists almost immediately after going solo but Marr held off for decades, preferring instead to focus on his own new material. He eventually relented and gave the audience what they wanted explaining "I’m giving everyone something they love. It’s about the power of music and what it means in people’s lives." The crowd singing along to the chorus is testament to that. I like that he doesn't try to copy Morrissey's delivery when doing old Smiths songs. Johnny's reading of "There Is a Light..." is less dramatic and seemingly more sincere. I don't know if old, embittered Morrissey still believes in the light that never goes out but I'd like to think Johnny still does.

The other reason I wanted to close things out with this version is the hometown crowd chanting "Johnny, Johnny, Johnny ###kin Marr" as the track fades out. I couldn't agree more.

Yes #1 - Roundabout
Album - Fragile (1971)

There was never any doubt what my #1 Yes song was going to be. Just a perfect rock song - one of my favorite “classic” rock songs ever.

Obviously, the bass work by Squire gets the headlines, but the guitar and keyboards also have incredible moments.

I crack up watching the reaction videos for this song to see how everyone freaks out when the bass line kicks in.

This was another fun exercise. I’ll post my full playlist tomorrow.

Thanks @Zegras11 and @KarmaPolice for running things and to everyone for continuing to broaden my musical knowledge and appreciation!

Great job with Yes.

#1: LORD HURON - MEET ME IN THE WOODS

I joke about not being a lyrics person, but when I thought back I remember this being an instant love. A big part of that were the very first lyrics of the song:

I took a little journey to the unknown
And I've come back changed, I can feel it in my bones
I ****ed with forces that our eyes can't see

Now the darkness got a hold on me

I fell for the voice, the tone of the music, along with the feelings and images it conjured up. I listened to the song over and over, which led to me listening to this album over and over. I know I've taken this song a few times in our adventures, so it has stayed my favorite all those years. It surprised me a little that I have been listening to them for around 15 years already.

Probably my wife's favorite song. Love seeing her go crazy when we see this live (I think 9 times now).

Thoughts on the #1s from artists I know well:

Yes -- "Roundabout" is their signature song and one of the greatest contributions that the prog genre has made to music.

Tweedy/Wilco -- "I'm the Man Who Loves You" has incredible lyrics and a spectacular arrangement, and the guitar frenzy at the end made it a frequent set closer when I saw them.

My Morning Jacket -- "Phone Went West" is the prototype for the epic songs on It Still Moves. It may have been the first hint of the heights they were capable of.

P-Funk -- "One Nation Under a Groove" is completely infectious even though the way it's constructed makes no sense.

Bee Gees -- "How Deep Is Your Love" is the most on-the-nose-disco of the Saturday Night Fever songs, but it's a moving ballad with lovely vocals.

I only considered things released under the Pearl Jam name.
Biggest surprise- between the 3 of us Better Man only received one 29 ranking.

I like it and like most of the others ranked by the two of you but not in my top 41. They are one my favorite 5 artists ever... I like most of their songs. I could easily rank a top 41 again in the future and have 10+ different songs in my list.

I mean, consider the songs I included in my list that were not in either of yours:

  • Pearl Jam (in my top 31 but not in either of yours):
    • Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
    • Insignificance
    • Inside Job
    • You Are
    • Gone
    • Severed Hand
    • Amongst The Waves
    • Dance of the Clairvoyants
  • Pearl Jam (in my 32-41; not in Pip's top 31, nor in MAC's top 36 or bubble list):
    • Thumbing My Way
    • Of the Girl
    • Life Wasted
    • No Way
  • Eddie (I know Pip didn't attempt to include these):
    • Hunger Strike
    • Guaranteed
    • Without You

Even ignoring the last songs, that is a hell of a Pearl Jam album.

The biggest surprise to me about your lists is that neither of you included Elderly Woman.

Elderly Woman falls within the tier starting at 22 and going into the bubble. Ultimately, I chose Daughter over it, but they could swap spots on any given day. I noticed there was a very clear line drawn after Jeremy when doing my ranks.

Man on the Moon- R.E.M.
from Automatic for the People (1992)

This song has been in my head for about over two weeks now. I even looked up the song meaning on Reddit and got this beautiful description that I think is fairly accurate, even if she meant "e.g." when she went with "i.e." (though maybe she's correct here because her example is literally pulled from the song, and therefore it is "i.e." as in "meaning"):

From foxxytroxxy

"I think it's about when a person finds that the fantastical parts of the world begin to foster disillusionment, i.e. thinking about being excited that somebody went to the moon, but only to realize that it's no longer exciting as soon as you understand all of the instrumentation. And watching comedians on Saturday mornings makes it look like they lead these wonderful lives; but in reality, behind the scenes, that they're all normal people."

Regardless of meaning or heaviness, I think the big credibility movement in my world (we all have them when we sit down and think about and listen to a few songs) from this countdown isn't Built to Spill or a few others I have neglected but enjoyed hearing (and normally would be up my alley), but rather I find myself thinking about R.E.M. and how instantly recognizable and distinct their songs are. They're a bit timeless even if people want to stick them in Athens, GA in the eighties and early nineties still. I don't know if people do that, but they sound pretty darn current, almost as if they'd been sealed hermetically.

I remember my friends and I sort of making fun of them in my more punk/metal days and my friend telling me R.E.M. stood for "redundant emission of music," to which I guffawed even if now, years later, I'd cuff myself gently for the simpleton's simpering. I'll have to check out the full list of songs because I'm sure I'm not familiar with all of them, and this seems like as good of a place as any to start.

And Scoresman, that was a nice list of The Walkmen's stuff. A lot of Heaven on there, which was never my favorite, but it sounded good here. Perhaps when it came out I'd just heard too much of them over the three or so years prior to its release.

Candlebox #1
Song: Far Behind
Album: Candlebox (1993)

(Official Video) CANDLEBOX - Far Behind (Official Video)
(Live version 1 ) CANDLEBOX - Far Behind (Live)
(Live version 2 - acoustic) Candlebox - Far Behind [Live In The Lounge]

Now maybe
I could have made my own mistakes
But I live with what I've known
And then maybe
We might share in something great
Won't you look at where we've grown
Won't you look at where we've gone

I know, I know. “Far Behind” as #1 is chalkier than the sticks used in Fun Dip. Though, like I said during the writeup for “Cover Me”, this had to earn this spot. My mental picture before I started ranking was certainly top 10 and probably top 5, but not #1. Too easy, and probably too overplayed. Except that, even having heard this who knows how many times, I wasn’t tired of it at all. Even when finding the linked versions, I was singing along. The guitars (especially that opening sting) and vocals are still as powerful as they were in the 90s. As much as I might occasionally juggle my top 4 (or so), in the end I felt like I was looking for reasons NOT to put this #1. So, you know, why not go with the obvious, right?

So then the question is “Can we talk about a 90s Seattle band without mentioning Andrew Wood?”. The answer, of course, is no. Let me just quote Kevin Martin here. "I wrote 'Far Behind' for Andy Wood. I was a huge Malfunkshun fan and a huge Mother Love Bone fan and I got to know Andy early on in his career when I was working in a shoe store with Susan Silver who was managing Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains." Martin and Wood’s friendship was strained once the latter started taking heroin, and Martin’s always felt like he pushed Wood away. Martin even thought about making the lyrics “Andy I didn’t mean to treat you bad” before changing it to the iconic “Now maybe”. Partially to leave some small room for doubt about the subject but I think also to make it more of an universal experience of friendships lost for one reason or another.

As always Thanks for the comments, the shout-outs, and even the little thumbs up. I’m glad I got to share this, and I hope you enjoyed the ride.

@KarmaPolice you were supposed to count which of the top Eurythmics songs you already knew. I guessed eight of the top sixteen. How many were you famiiar with?
Unless I missed one - 3. Your 1, 2, and 6 songs were the only ones that I knew I had heard, or even sounded familiar.
Wow. Just not into The Eurythimics, are you?
I am now! More accurately would be to say i listened to very little radio and watched very little non-metal or alt mtv.

He was alive in the '80s but almost completely ignorant of Journey. So nothing surprises me as far as what he hasn't heard/heard of.

 I had a similar thought as I posted the above. As usual, you have a better way of wording it.

I will probably have a 90%+ hit rate on knowing the hair metal and '88-93 playlists though.

Dang it, where do Oz and I put our deep dive posts now?

I completed my Iron Maiden task last week. Nice little 34 song playlist. I added live Fear of the Dark, and Total Eclipse since I had never head that song before. Cheated with Live After Death, but that was huge album. I added Iron Maiden and Flight of Icarus from that for a 3rd song from those albums. 4 Dickinson songs to round it out.

This week I seemed to be gravitating to weirder, proggier, and somebody I've never heard before. Haken it is. :oldunsure:

The next group exercise -- the themed countdown thread.
Do i need to think of a theme for the deep dives, too?
In the words of Krista, “there are no rules.”

Rule #2: No outside food

The #1s. Not selected. Not shuffled. Two posts. Repeating what I did for Round 3. Why? Because I’m crazy like that.

*The Rat - The Walkmen. Familiarity: None. Personal resonance: Pretty high; lots of energy and good performances throughout. The #1: I think Spotify played this after some playlist, but regardless I really liked it.

*London Calling - The Clash. Familiarity: Fairly well known, though certainly not everything. Personal Resonance: High up there, as you might expect from a band that were pioneers. The #1: Not my #1, but up there, and it's hard to argue against it.

*You and Me - Ryan Star. Familiarity: Basically none. Personal Resonance: Solid alt-rock where several songs hit me strongly. The #1: Right in his groove of high-charged vocals and good musicians behind (and including) him.

*Roundabout - Yes. Familiarity: Incredibly high, one of the top 3 best known in this version. Personal Resonance: Also incredibly high, as you might expect. The #1: A fun, catchy tune, and maybe now their best known thanks to Jojo.

*Car- Built To Spill. Familiarity: Just a few songs. Personal Resonance: The rotating cast provides a lot of styles and (positive) surprises. The #1: One I knew, though originally didn’t connect to them.

*There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - Johnny Marr. Familiarity: Stuff from Smiths and some of The The, but nothing else. Personal Resonance: I tried to highlight things I was less familiar with, but there was a lot of that I liked. The #1: Simply a classic, and Johnny’s a big part of its power.

*25 - The Pretty Reckless. Familiarity: A handful of hits, but nothing close to a deep dive. Personal Resonance: Yeah, I’m checking out the full playlist when I find time. The #1: A slow but fierce song; really enjoyed this one!

*I’m the Man Who Loves You - Wilco (/Jeff Tweedy). Familiarity: Some songs from Wilco, but that’s it. Personal Resonance: Good showcase of the talent of the band and Tweedy in particular. The #1: Yep, knew and liked this one.

*Stone In Love - Journey. Familiarity: Might’ve eventually done a list for them. Personal Resonance: Already high, but I do appreciate the deeper cuts. The #1: A rocker that would be up there in my rankings too.

*Roundtable Rival - Lindsay Stirling. Familiarity: I mean, my brain struggled with the name, so not much. Personal Resonance: Definitely will be checking out the playlist! The #1: Very upbeat, and I can see it being catchy.

*Fight The Fight - Triumph. Familiarity: A bit more than the big hits, but not a lot. Personal Resonance: I’m making a note here, huge success. (you’ll pardon the reference). The #1: Yeah, my #1 from them, too.

*Starseed - Our Lady Peace. Familiarity: Another one where I know some hits but that’s it. Personal Resonance: Very strong; I spotlighted them as much as anyone. The #1: Definitely one of the songs I knew, and previously liked.

*Looks That Kill - Motley Crue. Familiarity: Probably the only artist (this time) that I didn’t own an album from but knew 2/3rds of the songs. Personal Resonance: There’s definitely an attitude and spirit throughout that makes you smile. The #1: Right in their wheelhouse with a well-loved song

*Sometime Around Midnight: Familiarity: Had never heard of ‘em. Personal Resonance: Probably my favorite completely new experience. The #1: Apparently their “big hit”? Not familiar of course, but enjoyed it.

Part 2. Most of this done over a 2nd day.

*Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These) - Eurythmics (/Annie Lennox). Familiarity: Most of Eurythmics and some solo stuff. Personal Resonance: Feels like I put her on half my write-ups, so yeah, pretty high. The #1: Chalk, but beloved chalk. Good anthem for Evan Peters to save X-Men.

*I Didn’t Know My Own Strength - Whitney Houston. Familiarity: Like many I’m sure, strong early on then less as time went on. Personal Resonance: Pretty strong, and not always the huge hits. The #1: Definitely feels like she made it a personal song.

*Phone Went West - My Morning Jacket. Familiarity: A few songs, but not a lot. Personal Resonance: Didn’t always hit, but when it did, it hit big. I have a (new) favorite song from them now. The #1: They have a very powerful presence live

*Dancing On My Own- Robyn. Familiarity: Basically none. Personal Resonance: I really enjoyed a lot of it, so the new experience was welcome. The #1: A catchy and smooth dance song

*Gostava Tanto De Voce-Tim Maia. Familiarity: Absolutely none. Personal Resonance: Not knowing the language was a small barrier, but I found several songs to really enjoy. The #1: Flowed well into P-Funk, seemed like a thoughtful song.

*One Nation Under a Groove - Parliament Funkadelic. Familiarity: A mix; some of their main work, some solo stuff. Personal Resonance: Strong overall; a group where I appreciate the diverse look at them. The #1: Pure funk, indeed. 7 ½ minutes that don’t feel long.

*Meet Me In the Woods - Lord Huron. Familiarity: None here. Personal Resonance: Fighting with ATE for my favorite completely new experience. The #1: Right on par with other songs from this band. Catchy and high-spirited.

*Losing My Religion - R.E.M. Familiarity: Super high, though not everything. Personal Resonance: Never really got into them when I was younger, but my tastes have certainly changed (/broadened). The #1: Younger me thought this was more of a religious song before finding out the title is basically “Losing My Temper”.

*Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead. Familiarity: I own 6 or 7 albums, so, decent? ;). Personal Resonance: See previous sentence, but yeah, incredibly high. The #1: Very strong song. I feel the struggle to put all their great songs in any particular order.

*Black - Pearl Jam (/Eddie Vedder). Familiarity: I have a few Pearl Jam albums, but know less of Vedder’s solo work. Personal Resonance: Definitely way up there, in any form. The #1: We have the same 1 & 2, though I’d probably reverse the order

*How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees. Familiarity: Most of their songs, but there were some surprises. Personal Resonance: There are some cheesy bits, but most songs have aged very well. The #1: Not a trace of innuendo about that title, right? Kidding aside, I do really like this one.

*Wilder Than Her - Fred Eaglesmith. Familiarity: Absolutely none. Personal Resonance: Felt like “what if Gordon Lightfoot took a different direction”, which I mean as a big compliment. The #1: Right in that groove, and the end to this (live) version amused me.

*Walk With You - Ringo Starr. Familiarity: As a solo artist, not a lot. Personal Resonance: He’s having fun with every bit of this, and that shines in these songs. The #1: Just a fun (and silly?) little love song. So to speak.

*The Underground - Justin Prime, Rave Republic, Kevin Krissen (/Big Room). Familiarity: Collectively none. Personal Resonance: This isn’t generally my genre, but several songs still stood out. The #1: Pretty good stuff; might have gotten a spotlight in the usual format.

I'm not sure if it's been posted in this thread, but here's the google spreadsheet listing playlists for each of the MAD rounds.
Any reason only 4 people have added their playlist to the google sheet?
I tried and failed. Can't figure out how to post the artist name and then the link, could only do either or.
I did it for you. And my own.
Not sure why, but I read that with this kid's voice in mind.
