Middle-aged Dummies are back and bursting at the "themes" to get going! Full theme ahead! (6 Viewers)

So I’ve only done @Zegras11 MAD countdowns so far. Do these work the same where the #31s are released at one time along with a playlist and then we talk about our selections (if we choose)?

Yes, the Zegras ones work the same way as these do!

ETA: I should admit that when I did my first three, I posted a new list every day, but by the fourth I slowed down because I saw that Zegras's slower pace worked better.
Obviously do this however you want - but it may be less work for you if you have everyone use that tool we use with Zegras’s MAD countdowns to compile the lists.

My theme is train songs. This can be songs specifically about a train, trains used as metaphors, people sitting on a train, etc. The songs won't be in order of favorites, but will be in a flow and placement that I like. I don't want to repeat any train songs that have already been used in the MADs. The following are train related songs that I found that have already been used, and there may be some that I missed.

Driver 8 - R.E.M., City of New Orleans - Willie Nelson, Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight and the Pips, Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees, Crazy Train - Ozzy, Railroad Lady - Jerry Jeff Walker, Last Train Home - Lostprophets, Train Song - Tom Waits, Midnight Train - Buddy Guy and Johnny Lang, Take The 'A' Train - Duke Ellington, Transcendent Ramblin' Railroad Blues - Colter Wall, Boxcar - Mountain Goats, The Monkey and the Engineer - Grateful Dead, Back On The Train - Phish, Last Train to London - ELO, Burnin' Train - Bruce Springsteen, Railroad Daisies - Clutch, Midnight Train to Memphis - Kid Rock, Mystery Train - Brian Setzer, Tuesday's Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Homeward Bound - Simon & Garfunkel, Train in Vain - The Clash, Down in the Tube Station at Midnight - The Jam, Station to Station - David Bowie, Last Train Home - Ryan Stars, The Draize Train - The Smiths, Trains Across the Sea - Silver Jews.

I have lived in a cave for the last quarter of a century. What the heck is Grand Theft Auto?

Back in the mid-90's, Scottish video game studio DMA Design, previously best known for the ported to every system in the universe puzzle game Lemmings, were working on a game called Race and Chase, in which the player controls a police officer hunting down criminals. However, in testing this proved to be boring as hell, so they came up with the idea of reversing the roles. Eventually this would rise to the original Grand Theft Auto, a top down Zelda-style perspective open world game spread across six levels and three cities, with the objective to accumulate enough points through progress through each level, points being accumulated through either completion of various missions, or simply carrying out whatever crime you were able to get away with - there was no requirement to actually do any of the missions provided whatsoever. The game was a commercial success, albeit with mixed reviews, and the immediate sequel Grand Theft Auto 2 was notably less successful, not adding a great deal to the formula of the original game (nor did the two London-based expansion packs for the original title). However, 2001's Grand Theft Auto III was a different story, moving the game into a 3D perspective for the first time, adding a greater story element with required missions to develop plotlines and open up new areas of the map, including many different side missions which are staples of the series to the present day. GTA III is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time, and elevated the series (now produced/published by Rockstar) to new heights, with the most recent installment, Grand Theft Auto V, being the second highest selling video game ever (after Minecraft), generating over a billion dollars worth of sales within three days to be the fastest entertainment product ever to reach that milestone, while the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto VI is one of the most anticipated games ever.

OK, so what's the 3D era?

In the GTA series, the 3D era refers to the games released after GTA 2 and prior to GTA IV, namely:

Grand Theft Auto III (2001) - set in fictional Liberty City (heavily based on a then-present day New York City), GTA III follows mute protagonist Claude, a low-level criminal who escapes during his transfer to prison when a cartel ambushes his transport to abduct another inmate. Claude begins working for the mafia, carrying out varying jobs for them, however they eventually plan to set him up. Claude is tipped off about this by Maria, the wife of don Salvatore, escapes from Portland to Staunton Island, and then kills Salvatore to cut ties. Claude proceeds to work for various groups, each to some extent wanting to gain influence over the others, culminating with Claude attacking Colombian Cartel interests. Catalina, the cartel leader is enraged by this and kidnaps Maria, holding her to ransom. Claude meets to pay it, but it turns out to be a trap. Claude however is able to escape, rescuing Maria and shooting down the helicopter Catalina is attempting to flee in.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) - released less than a year later using much the same game engine, Vice City is set in 1986 in the fictional city of the same name (based on Miami), and is much more heavily based on real life media than GTA III, notably Miami Vice and Scarface. Protagonist Tommy Vercetti (Ray Liotta) is released from prison and sent by his boss Sonny Forelli (Tom Sizemore) to establish drug operations in the south and oversee an upcoming deal with lawyer Ken Rosenberg (William Fichtner). The deal however is ambushed by persons unknown, Tommy and Ken barely escaping alive. Sonny tasks Tommy to recover the drugs and the money, and Tommy proceeds to gather information from various people. It transpires that after some investigation, local drug lord Ricardo Diaz (Luis Guzman) was behind the ambush. Lance Vance (Philip Michael Thomas), who aided in the initial deal, goes to kill Diaz himself, but is captured. Tommy rescues Lance, then the two of them raid Diaz's mansion, killing him. Tommy proceeds to take over Diaz's assets and expand his empire, buying up various businesses as fronts and taking over Vice City's drug trade. Sonny learns about this and Tommy not cutting him in, sending mobsters to collect on his behalf. Tommy kills them, prompting Sonny to head to Vice City personally to deal with the situation. Tommy and Lance prepare to pay Sonny using counterfeit money, but Sonny reveals that not only has Lance betrayed Tommy, siding with the Forelli's, but it was Sonny who was responsible for his previous arrest and prison sentence. A shootout ensues, with Tommy killing Lance and then Sonny, leaving him as the king of Vice City.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) - set in 1992 San Andreas (a fictional Western state incorporating cities based on Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas along with various smaller towns), the game features plotlines based heavily on real life incidents, including the 92 Los Angeles riots and the Rampart scandal. Protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson (Young Maylay) returns to Los Santos following the death of his mother in a shooting. He is intercepted by corrupt police officer Frank Tenpenny (Samuel L Jackson), threatening to implicate him in a murder case unless he co-operates with him. CJ reunites with his brother Sweet and old Grove Street Families (GSF) gang members Big Smoke and Ryder. CJ works to restore the GSF, allying with leader of a different gang, Cesar Vialpando, who prior to the GSF striking back at the rival Ballas, discovers Smoke and Ryder meeting with Tenpenny and Ballas members. Suspecting a set-up, CJ rushes to Sweet's aid, who is injured and arrested in an ambush, while Tenpenny exiles CJ to the rural Badlands, requiring him to eliminate witnesses to police corruption in exchange for Sweet's safety. CJ carries out robberies to build cash and wins a garage in San Fierro in a street race. In San Fierro, CJ encounters Smoke and Ryder's drug connections, destroying one of their factories, killing Ryder and seemingly leader Mike Toreno (James Woods). Toreno however survived the attack, and reveals himself to be an undercover government agent to CJ, asking him to carry out various tasks in exchange for Sweet's release from prison. With Sweet released, CJ returns to Los Santos, drives rival gangs off GSF territory and builds their influence within the city. Tenpenny is meanwhile arrested and charged with various felonies, but the charges were dropped due to lack of witnesses, causing a city-wide riot. CJ works out where Smoke is hiding, and engage in a gunfight which CJ wins. However, Tenpenny arrives, holding CJ at gunpoint and then flees with Smoke's drug money. CJ and Sweet pursue Tenpenny, who is escaping in a fire truck, in a city-wide chase, culminating with Tenpenny losing control, and crashing off the Grove Street bridge, dying of his injuries.

That's all well and good, but how does the theme work?

One of the most notable features of the Grand Theft Auto series is the soundtrack. While in vehicles, players can listen to a wide choice of in-game radio stations strongly based on the setting and location of the specific game in question. Initially featuring primarily tracks written specifically for the game, but switching to a mixture of this and licenced music in GTA III, before Vice City switched to almost entirely licenced music, something which carried on with San Andreas. I'll be taking my favourite track from all 25 stations in the game (excluding the talk radio stations), along with the next best six of my choosing for the playlist, but I'll expand the long list out to 100 in a separate post.

In! I am going with: "Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag." 31 artists covering all genres of metal for your listening pleasure.
Love the specificity of the theme. What age are we talking about here?

I've never played any version, though I see many folks on the road who apparently learned to drive from playing it.

Tau837 – hair metal

Although there are no official rules, I intend to limit myself to songs that are played on SiriusXM Hair Nation channel and/or were played on MTV's Headbanger's Ball back when that was a thing. I intend to limit myself to no more than two songs per artist.

In! I am going with: "Metal songs from 1988-1992 that became the gateway into the world of music for a young Yambag." 31 artists covering all genres of metal for your listening pleasure.

Will be interesting to see how much overlap our lists have in artists and specific songs.

Ooh. I like the double up. I confused you two and thought the hair metal got tweaked to the '88-'92 theme. 2x times the :headbang:

Pedantic grammatical edit: My list is not in ranked order, so the word “top” doesn’t apply.

Good point. If anyone else has one not in order of preference, let me know and I'll note it.

Just put whichever song you want posted last at the top, and then down from there.
Check. My list is in whatever order I please.

Rock dots and unlauts - the sprinkles on the music of life.

Driver 8 - R.E.M., City of New Orleans - Willie Nelson, Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight and the Pips, Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees, Crazy Train - Ozzy, Railroad Lady - Jerry Jeff Walker, Last Train Home - Lostprophets, Train Song - Tom Waits, Midnight Train - Buddy Guy and Johnny Lang, Take The 'A' Train - Duke Ellington, Transcendent Ramblin' Railroad Blues - Colter Wall, Boxcar - Mountain Goats, The Monkey and the Engineer - Grateful Dead, Back On The Train - Phish, Last Train to London - ELO, Burnin' Train - Bruce Springsteen, Railroad Daisies - Clutch, Midnight Train to Memphis - Kid Rock, Mystery Train - Brian Setzer, Tuesday's Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Homeward Bound - Simon & Garfunkel, Train in Vain - The Clash, Down in the Tube Station at Midnight - The Jam, Station to Station - David Bowie, Last Train Home - Ryan Stars, The Draize Train - The Smiths.
You probably weren't planning to use it, but I listed "Trains Across The Sea" by Silver Jews (David Berman) a couple threads ago.

I am going to have to sit this one out, @krista4 . I haven't even come up with a theme let alone started looking for songs. This is also the start of my busiest season at work so I'll have less time for this---and I struggle to keep up even in slower seasons.

Looks like it's going to be another great set of playlists.

Since I have quite a few subgenres, looks like only 4 could overlap.

Some participants from prior M-aD countdowns who haven't committed to this one, but could be interested? This might be less intimidating than the Zegras countdowns since you don't have to listen to a full catalog from an artist. We'd love to see you!

Ranking of all but one station in III done:

Head Radio (pop) is all music written for the game but definitely not a favourite, not much that's really memorable but at least had a clear #1
K-JAH (dub, reggae) was easy enough, all the tracks are by the same artist, specifically one album. It's one I "acquired" after playing the game so one I know, already knew what I wanted to be #1, was just a case of ordering the rest and seeing what I might want in the 32-100
Rise FM (trance, house) probably the easiest, I have the mix on my phone anyway, just a case of which of the two best tracks I want to put at the top and whether I wanted to consider other tracks outside those two for the long list
Lips 106 (pop) is somewhat similar to Head but with a much better track selection and an obvious #1 in my mind already so easy enough
Game Radio (rap, hip hop) was a tad annoying, a lot of the tracks listed on the soundtrack are truncated or just someone freestyling, although at least it was easy enough to differentiate the different tracks, and the one I thought I'd have at #1 actually ended up at #3
MSX FM (drum and bass) was far worse - not because I dislike it (probably have a higher proportion of DNB in my main playlist than any other genre), more that it is another station that is effectively a mixtape (the entirety of the station is a subset of an actual real life mix CD) with it often being hard to tell when one tracks begins and another ends, with several only running for a minute or two before the DJ mixes to something new. That, and there's an MC spitting for all 25 minutes which won't be included in the final selected track
Flashback 95.6 (classic pop/post-disco) was also easy, all the tracks are licenced from the same film soundtrack so I didn't even need to listen to it to set the order

with your 31 pointer (i.e., your #1 choice) at the top of your list, and in descending order from there

Just put whichever song you want posted last at the top, and then down from there.
Are these two statements the same? They don't look the same to me. I'm so confused.
Yes. The first song on your list is the one you rank #1. The #1s will be posted last.

Thanks. Same as it ever was.

I think I've updated the third post with all participants and themes so far - please let me know if you see anything missing or incorrect.

What do you all think about having the deadline for submissions be Friday, January 24, then I'll post the Last Five Outs on Saturday the 25th and start the official countdown on Monday, January 27?

I know people who are already done will be getting eager for it to start, but some people don't have a theme yet and I want to give as much time possible for those who want to participate.

Of course, individuals could post their own last five out if you preferred.

I'll find some heavy metal funeral music too.
I’ll probably throw in a few grammatically incorrect heavy metal songs for good measure. Much of the genre consists of Rhodes Scholars though, so it may be difficult.

Let’s see if there is a grammatically incorrect hair metal song about trains and using umlauts and we can get it on 5 playlists (6 if it’s not on Shake’s list).

I will have a few metal songs on my list (I’m going with live versions of songs to fit more into my theme though).
For obvious reasons, there will be some metal on my list also. Rock on.

Type O Negative?

And I've said before, but if Greta Van Fleet is scratching a particular itch for you, I recommend checking out Rival Sons. Obvious Zeppelin influence without blatantly ripping it off. Recommended songs: Face of Light, Jordan, Feral Roots

j/k - I bumped them up my listening queue.
